00:00There have been many messages in bottles found over the years, but this one may just be the
00:05greatest. A message that was written over 130 years ago, yet it wasn't discovered until recently.
00:12And it didn't just tell us who sent it and where they were, but it also led us to an actual secret
00:17island. In 1896, a man named August Egren decided he wanted to put a message in a bottle and let
00:25fate decide where it would end up. He sealed his note inside of a bottle and then dropped it into
00:30the sea. The bottle was designed to float on the water and its intended destination was for it to
00:36wash ashore on some far off tropical island. He wanted to see if someone would find it and then
00:41use the clues inside to get there. But little did he know, it would take over 130 years for this to
00:48happen. August wrote down a few clues about where to find the island. For starters, he noted that it
00:54would be 45 degrees north latitude, which is actually pretty accurate. If you look at Minnesota,
01:01for example, it's around 45 degrees north latitude. So that meant the island should be somewhere near
01:07there. But there are hundreds of islands that are close to that latitude. So he left other clues like
01:13saying the island was 30 minutes by boat from the mainland. He also said the island was 500 paces from
01:20a lighthouse. And finally, the most important clue. The island had a red roof house. He dropped the
01:27bottle into the ocean and hoped for the best. Little did he know the bottle would be discovered
01:33all the way across the world. In 2022 by a man named Ivan. Ivan lives on the coast of Finland and
01:40he frequently goes exploring on his boat. One day while out on his boat, he spotted something floating in
01:45the water and decided to go check it out. What he pulled out of the water was an old bottle with a
01:51note inside. Excited by his discovery, he quickly opened the note and began reading. When he first
01:59read that the island was 45 degrees north, he thought it was talking about the north pole. But after doing
02:05some quick math in his head, he realized it couldn't be that far north because the north pole is roughly
02:1090 degrees north. After looking over the other clues, he still wasn't sure exactly where the island was.
02:17But he knew it was somewhere off the coast of Finland. So he set sail and began searching. He
02:23looked everywhere. But after a while, he started to think the island may have sunk. Or maybe it never
02:28existed. Just when he was about to give up, he remembered the lighthouse. The message said the
02:34island was 500 paces from a lighthouse. So he pulled out his phone and began searching for
02:39lighthouses near the coordinates. That's when he found it. A small uninhabited island with a lighthouse
02:46and a red roof house. Excited, he turned his boat around and headed over to the island. When he got
02:52closer, he could see the red roof house. But when he landed on the island, it was clear that no one had
02:58lived here in decades. There were no people on the island, but there was a small museum. Inside the
03:05museum, Ivan learned about the history of the island and the lighthouse, but it didn't say
03:09anything about a message in a bottle or the secret island. So he left and returned to his boat. It was
03:14then that Ivan noticed something strange. The message in the bottle said the island was 30 minutes away
03:20by boat. But it took him over an hour to get there. This meant the island was actually much closer than he
03:26thought. Looking back at the coordinates, he realized he had made a mistake when measuring
03:31the distance. Luckily, he had taken a GPS earlier, and he was able to determine the real coordinates of
03:37the island. They were almost exactly the same as the coordinates he had been given in the message.
03:43With these coordinates, Ivan was able to find a small uninhabited island that matched the description
03:50of the one from the message. Ivan was amazed by the discovery, and he became the first person in
03:55over 130 years to find the secret island. It just goes to show sometimes messages in bottles do get
04:03delivered. But now it's time to hear from you. What do you think was August's intended destination?
