Have you ever been in a room where you can feel a palpable, collective swooning? Welcome to a Maxwell Tiny Desk. The crooner’s sensual falsetto and rooted baritone have seduced audiences since his debut album dropped in 1996. One of the leading voices in the resurgence of soul music during the late ’90s, Maxwell’s albums are full of tender songs recounting love, life and heartbreak that have resonated with generations of fans looking for ways to be vulnerable.
Clad in soothing neutrals, Maxwell charmingly admitted his nervousness at being at the Desk, stating that “This is where real music can’t lie. You cannot lie here.” The audience was there with encouragement — singing along, screaming in pure glee and adding the party vibe when needed. His set here featured “Sumthin' Sumthin'” complete with a funky bass solo from Darrell "Free" Freeman. “Lifetime” features impressive work from Travis Sayles on the keys and Shedrick “Shed” Mitchell on the Hammond B3 organ, an instrument I’m admittedly partial to. Maxwell presented his latest single during this set, a cover of the Al Green classic “Simply Beautiful,” breathing life into the song and paying homage to the soul singer. To end his set, Maxwell performed the song that launched his career, “Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder).” Percussionist Charles Haynes gave us a little D.C. go-go flavor as everyone partied.

03:01What's up Tiny Desk?
03:07Y'all live for the afternoon, though
03:09Y'all thank you so much for this, you see we go way, way, way, way, way back.
03:39Baby, baby, baby, make me crazy, don't speak no sign, I want you to prove it to me in the love, you have to tell the way you move.
04:06Honey, if anything ever should change in you, don't worry, I'm standing there, I'm moving with a tiny dustbin, this is the highest cost, take you and make you off, give you and leave you lost, will you forgive me?
04:31Absolutely.
05:02Overdose, I'm slipping, I'm here, I'm on my knees, I feel my heart's about to explode, this is the highest cost, take you and make you off, give you and leave you lost, will you forgive me?
05:23Well, I'm on my knees, ask down, although my trials take a long time, I was drinking, gullant to keep you down, a little smokin', and to get me from the hood around me.
05:33Baby, if you tell the truth
05:37When I'm sober, I chose with you
05:41When it's over, I'm overdue
05:44Cause there's no one as bad as, bad as, bad as, bad as
05:49When it's over, I ain't with you
05:51Oh, wow, oh, wow
05:55You got yourself on the love, baby
05:57I'm so, I'm so
05:59Love, I can't come down
06:02This is the hottest cause
06:05To take you and make you all
06:08Lift you and leave you and
06:12Will you forgive me?
06:16As I fall over town
06:18Tracks you and keeps you down
06:21To don't live a day around
06:24Will you forgive my bad habit?
06:28Will you forgive my bad habit?
06:32Till you forget my bad habit
06:34Will you forgive my bad habit?
06:38Will you forgive my bad habit?
06:44Will you forgive my bad habit?
06:48Will you forgive my pain?
06:49I can't control the feeling
06:50Can we do it together? Let's go.
07:20It's your love for the bandwagon.
07:50Oh, wow. Okay.
08:00I'm going to keep it a bill with y'all, okay?
08:02One time. Just, I have not slept all night.
08:07I'm telling you 100%.
08:08I've been up so nervous about this.
08:12This is, to me, one of the most, you know, epic places to be.
08:16Anyway, it's just, this is where real music can't lie.
08:22You cannot lie here.
08:24So, thank you for making this nervousness become appreciation and comfort and security right now.
08:30So, thank you.
08:32Seriously.
08:34That's some real shit right there, okay?
10:39I'll see you next time.
11:09I'm the keys, Travis, from Brooklyn, New York.
11:34Let's take it home, y'all.
11:35Let's take it home, y'all.
12:05Let's take it home, y'all.
12:12Let's take it home, y'all.
12:21Let me tell you.
12:25Shout out to my millennials who probably know this song right here.
12:29Gen Z, what's up?
12:41Gen X, what's good?
12:44My Zillennials, we see you too.
12:47Time will bring the real end of our tribe.
12:51One day there'll be no remnants, no trace, no residue.
12:54Oh, feelings within you, but they won't remember me.
13:03Your face will be the reason I smile, but I will not see what I cannot have forever.
13:11I'll always love you, but I hope you feel the same.
13:19Oh, you played me dirty, you played me so bad.
13:23It's all when my affection had to fill out my prescription of the remedy.
13:30I had to set you away from me to see you.
13:38Play me the way that you can be when you are not with me.
13:45I had to live, I had to live, I had to live, I had to live.
13:51I can't have you, let those set you free to fly.
13:58I love you so much, you sound so beautiful.
14:13I came wrong, you were right.
14:19I had to live, I had to live, I had to live.
14:24I'm sorry I told you a lie.
14:30I'm sorry I called you.
14:33I'm sorry I had to live, I had to live.
14:34I'm sorry I could have.
14:35I'm sorry I could have.
14:37I'm sorry I could have.
14:39I should have told you better times, better times, better days, but I miss you more and more.
14:50If I can't have you, then love sets you free to lock your pretty wings around.
14:58Pretty wings, your pretty wings around.
15:28Little pretty, pretty wings, little pretty, little pretty.
15:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:59Pretty wings, your pretty wings around.
16:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:07Pretty wings, your pretty wings around.
16:12Thank you so much for bringing me back with this song, everybody.
18:02I was so petrified.
18:05Seriously, I mean, this is God, truly.
18:10This is God in the room for me.
18:14We're gonna do a song that celebrates a singular voice,
18:18a singular soul sensation.
18:20Not always mentioned, not always spoken of,
18:23but truly, truly should be celebrated, Mr. Al Green.
18:27I don't know if y'all know who that is,
18:30but if you don't, you're gonna know now, okay?
18:35All right, so here we go.
18:47Let me stand up for this one.
18:55If I gave you my love
18:59Tell you what I'd do
19:05I'd expect a whole lot of love out of you
19:15Oh, yeah
19:21I don't mean to be so
19:23You've got to be good to me
19:29Cause you know why
19:31I'm gonna be good to you
19:37There's a whole lot of things behind you
19:42I can do
19:44Ladies, you're simply beautiful
19:53Beautiful
19:57Simply beautiful
20:00What about the way you love me?
20:22I'll be right there
20:24I'll be right where
20:27Tell them where we're gonna be right there
20:31Simply beautiful
20:34Simply beautiful
20:42The way you need me
20:50The way you're squeezing
20:57Simply beautiful
21:03Simply beautiful
21:10Shout out to Al Green one time
21:15Thank you, listen
21:16Truly
21:24I'm the greatest
21:26I want to take a minute to shout out
21:31Yeah, so that's what that, that was that
21:47I don't know if y'all had drinks earlier or something
21:56I don't know
21:57But
21:58One margarita
22:01Give me two margaritas
22:04I don't know nothing about that
22:07All I know is at the end of the day
22:10The day going
22:11But since we're talking about margaritas
22:16We should probably talk about some potato salad
22:18And some barbecue
22:19And the cookout
22:22And just thank you so much for giving me a plate every summer
22:27For the last 28 years, please
22:30It's kind of crazy
22:32Time is so insane
22:34You just have no idea how fast it goes
22:37But life is a beautiful thing
22:39It's precious
22:39We are blessed to live
22:43We are blessed to touch each other
22:44And the fact that music is this conduit
22:48It's just this language that speaks to every single soul
22:52And thank you for letting me speak that language with you
22:55And speaking it back to me
22:57And all those things
22:59But
22:59It happened the moment
23:02When you were revealed
23:07You get it
23:09Come on
23:15A fantasy
23:16I see you
23:18Uh-huh
23:19What?
23:20You gave me this beat
23:22What?
23:29Well, you made me feel good
23:32And feel nice
23:33And feel loved
23:34What?
23:35Gave me back
23:36Yeah
23:37Yeah
23:38So
23:39Come on
23:41Should not be a loss
23:44Oh-ho
23:46Don't want to hurt
23:47It's love to hurt
23:49Uh-huh
23:49If you don't know
23:53Then I'll say it
23:55So don't ever wonder
23:57Don't ever wonder
24:00It's a cookout, y'all
24:01Come on
24:01Hey
24:06We're doing a little go-go for you
24:08I know you like it
24:09So run the box
24:16You better come up here
24:37It happened the moment
24:41When you were revealed
24:46Cause you were a dream
24:51That you should not have been
24:53A fantasy
24:55What really?
24:57Let's see it
25:01Baby
25:02This rhythm inside
25:06You made me feel good
25:11And feel nice
25:12And real love
25:13Gave me paradise
25:16So
25:18Oh-oh-oh-oh
25:19Oh-oh-oh
25:20You're the guy who realized
25:23Let him know
25:24Let him know
25:25That you're the highest
25:26That I'm the higher
25:27If you don't know, baby
25:30If you don't know
25:32Then I'll say it
25:33So don't ever wonder
25:36Wonder
25:37So tell me how I know
26:01Hey Jody
26:04How long is it going?
26:06Take it till you sleep, baby
26:08Cause I live my life
26:16Without you here by my side
26:22How long is it going to take
26:47Until you speak, baby
26:49Cause
26:50You're the highest
26:53If you don't know
26:55When you're the highest
26:57And the highest
26:58If you don't know
27:00My side
27:02Hey Jody
27:05How long is it going to take
27:08Your life
27:10Now
27:12You're the highest
27:15And
27:16That you're the highest
27:18You gave me this feeling
27:26And you did
27:27This feeling in my life
27:48Let's go
27:59Put that back down
28:18Do the news set one time
28:23Don't ever wonder
28:28Don't ever wonder
28:34Don't ever wonder
28:38Don't ever wonder
28:43Don't ever wonder
28:48Don't ever wonder
28:55Don't ever wonder
28:58Shout out to the band, y'all
