00:00On this day in space. In 1979, the abandoned US space station Skylab made a
00:07spectacular return to Earth as it burned up in the atmosphere, showering debris
00:10over the Indian Ocean and Western Australia. The last crew left the space
00:15station in 1974. Over time, it began to de-orbit, slowly sinking closer and
00:19closer to Earth. Skylab actually fell back to Earth a little sooner than NASA
00:23anticipated. Strong solar storms were blamed for this premature plunge because
00:28solar activity had warmed up Earth's atmosphere. As pieces of Skylab broke up
00:32in the atmosphere, residents and pilots in the area saw dozens of colorful
00:36firework-like flares. And that's what happened on this day in space.
