00:00:00I'm Dr. Walt Miner.
00:00:26I'm here to talk about LSD.
00:00:30We have never given LSD to a living creature that it hasn't affected.
00:00:38It affects fish, it affects spiders, it affects rabbits and dogs and cats, and perhaps most
00:00:44interesting of all, for one reason or another, LSD was given to an elephant once.
00:00:51And lo and behold, it killed the elephant.
00:00:53Some people have a bad experience the first time they take the drug.
00:00:57Others take it 30, 60, or even 100 times before their bad trip.
00:01:02And the bad trip, instant insanity.
00:01:05Often a never-never land of no return.
00:01:08There's nothing grown up or sophisticated in taking an LSD trip at all.
00:01:13They're just being complete fools.
00:01:16It is playing Russian luck.
00:01:28Drug use in educational films has always been portrayed in a somewhat exaggerated and hysterical
00:01:33way.
00:01:34Parents panicking, children having freak-outs, and people jumping out of windows.
00:01:40Don't get me wrong, drugs can be dangerous, but they can also be hilarious.
00:01:53Now, what kind of person would put themselves through something dangerous and hilarious?
00:01:58If nothing else, my hope is that tonight's film will answer that question.
00:02:04Enjoy.
00:02:05I don't think psychedelics are the answer to the world's problems, but they could be a
00:02:12start.
00:02:13I just did it.
00:02:14Einstein.
00:02:15Steve Jobs.
00:02:16Jimi Hendrix.
00:02:17ASAP.
00:02:18Fucking rocket.
00:02:19And I just always had this question.
00:02:20There's gotta be more.
00:02:21There's gotta be more.
00:02:22And then when I took acid, I'm like, oh, you were right.
00:02:25There's a lot more.
00:02:26My point of view changed on drugs.
00:02:29We gained a lot of insight about the way I view reality.
00:02:33I've easily done over 100 hits.
00:02:36Easily.
00:02:37And probably closer to two.
00:02:39Doesn't eight make you legally insane?
00:02:41They say that.
00:02:42I think I've done mushrooms like 12 times.
00:02:46I probably did mushrooms 12 times.
00:02:49Literally 50 times.
00:02:50I took a lot of acid.
00:02:52A lot of acid.
00:02:53I took a lot of acid.
00:02:54I must have taken around 500 trips.
00:02:56I took acid once.
00:02:58Maybe even didn't need to actually take it.
00:03:04Probably could've just watched this documentary.
00:03:06Is everybody in?
00:03:08The movie is about to begin.
00:03:28It H trains a set of
00:03:36Ooh
00:03:37There'll be some happy endings
00:03:39There'll be dreams that don't come true
00:03:45In the times ahead
00:03:51There's love and hate and over the head
00:03:53Afin' bread comes in
00:03:55Bum and all
00:03:57It makes it that much part of you, yeah
00:04:02I'm no more worried
00:04:05I want it too
00:04:11But if you're ready
00:04:17I'm here to fall from you
00:04:23What else is there for us to do?
00:04:48Psychotropic drugs fall under a huge, broad category
00:04:52What I experimented with were hallucinogens
00:04:56And they put you in a state of consciousness
00:05:00Which is very altered
00:05:03Where your perception, your cognition
00:05:06Your knowing is very different
00:05:10Initially it feels like it's not real
00:05:15But then when you come out of it
00:05:17You wonder what is real
00:05:19I wouldn't like this to be an exercise
00:05:22In a sort of just say no campaign
00:05:25Putting people off this experience
00:05:27Because I think it's a valuable experience
00:05:31And whenever I've had a bad trip
00:05:34And I've had many
00:05:36I always realized that it was what I needed
00:05:41Sometimes it kicks your ass
00:05:45And sometimes you need to have your ego
00:05:48Taken down a notch or two
00:05:50On the other hand
00:05:51You can get immensely rewarding experiences
00:05:55Full of love and support
00:05:58And a sense of buoyancy
00:06:00And a sense of a religious sense
00:06:02Of connection to the planet
00:06:04So my feeling is
00:06:07It's, um, it balances out
00:06:09I remember one day
00:06:20A friend of mine gave me some dried peyote
00:06:23Which I'd never taken before
00:06:26I live on a farm down in England
00:06:29I took it at 11am
00:06:31On the way back to that lane house
00:06:33Um, I started to get this feeling
00:06:37And everything was coming alive
00:06:39The grass starts talking to me
00:06:42And very quickly
00:06:47I entered this psychedelic realm
00:06:49The trees are waving kind of musically at me
00:06:52And I go past the farm
00:06:56And I have a guy who runs my farm called John
00:06:59Who hails me over very urgently
00:07:02Come on, I need your help
00:07:04I said, John, I'm, uh, I'm actually busy
00:07:07He says, no, no, you've got to help me
00:07:10I said, well, what is it?
00:07:11He said, well, um, one of the cows
00:07:13Is having a problem birthing
00:07:15And I need your help
00:07:17Because without your help, she'll die
00:07:19She's in a, you know, a bad way
00:07:21And as he's speaking
00:07:22I'm getting more and more high
00:07:24And, uh, disconcerted
00:07:26So I go over to him
00:07:28And she's in distress
00:07:30She's, she's crying
00:07:31She's a great deal of pain
00:07:33What the experience does
00:07:36Is it very clearly presents you
00:07:39With the idea of mortality
00:07:40Right here
00:07:41And you cannot, you can't dodge it
00:07:43It's your own mortality
00:07:45The mortality of this planet
00:07:47The mortality of this little steer
00:07:48Who's being born and its mother
00:07:50So you cannot get around that
00:07:52That is the central issue of consciousness
00:07:55One day, we will not exist
00:07:58How do we, how do we deal with it?
00:08:00So we wrap some rope around the steer's forelegs and snout
00:08:06And I, my job is to pull
00:08:07While he navigates the operation
00:08:10And we're getting covered in all kinds of amniotic fluid and stuff
00:08:14This operation takes about 20 minutes of food
00:08:17It's like pulling in a whale on a fishing boat
00:08:21But I'm getting higher
00:08:23And we eventually get the steer out
00:08:30His mother breathes a sigh of relief
00:08:32And for me, the entire universe is cracked open
00:08:36It was like the meaning of life
00:08:38You know, I think what the psychedelic experience does
00:08:42Is it takes
00:08:44The it out of me and it
00:08:48It becomes me and thou
00:08:52Everything
00:08:53You know, whether it's a tree
00:08:55Or it's a river
00:08:56Or it's a piece of rock
00:08:58You realize that you are connected
00:09:01You know, you're made up of the same matter
00:09:04I think when you treat the world as just an object
00:09:07You tend to treat it badly
00:09:08If you see the world as part of you
00:09:12Then you will treat it better
00:09:14You know, it's not something you want to do every day
00:09:17You have to prepare
00:09:18You need an intention
00:09:20You can say, okay, I'm going to have this experience
00:09:23And I'm hoping with this experience
00:09:27I will be able to write a song
00:09:28Or I will write my novel
00:09:31Or I will make love
00:09:33Or I will treat my family better
00:09:35I'll be a better citizen
00:09:36So if you have an objective
00:09:38And then you have the experience
00:09:40Then you'll be rewarded
00:09:41If your objective is to just get fucked up
00:09:44Then you will get fucked up
00:09:45So my advice is don't do that
00:09:48I'll be honest
00:09:49I don't remember having a conversation about it
00:09:52I don't remember anything other than he handed it to us
00:09:55And we just went, boop
00:09:56Put it right in our mouth
00:09:57Didn't think
00:09:58One thought about it
00:10:01No thought went into it
00:10:04Could have been a big life decision
00:10:06I was a young comedian
00:10:18In New York City
00:10:20We used to hang out at the end of the night
00:10:24All the comics would hang out at this restaurant
00:10:26This old hippie-looking white guy walked in
00:10:30He had these, like, pretty substantial, like, white pieces of paper
00:10:35Boop, boop
00:10:3745 minutes later
00:10:38What was that?
00:10:39Was that acid we took?
00:10:40I don't feel anything
00:10:42And it's always when you say
00:10:43I don't feel anything
00:10:44It's usually kind of the tipping point
00:10:47Do I feel anything?
00:10:51What is feeling?
00:10:55What is feeling?
00:10:57What is feeling anything?
00:10:58Oh, this is what tripping on acid is like
00:11:02And the hot chocolate came
00:11:04And the foam or the whipped cream was, like, breathing
00:11:07And it was too alive to drink
00:11:09We floated to Washington Square Park
00:11:12With a gaggle of people we had never met before
00:11:15Semi-homeless, maybe-ish people
00:11:17And we found ourselves feeling each other's faces
00:11:22And laughing
00:11:24And crying
00:11:25And realizing huge things
00:11:28I remember saying, let's go back to my apartment
00:11:31So we just ran
00:11:36So we get in his car
00:11:41And he pulls out
00:11:42And we get to the red light
00:11:44And the red light turns green
00:11:46And then yellow
00:11:47And then red
00:11:48And then green
00:11:49And then yellow
00:11:50And then red
00:11:51And then green
00:11:51And yellow
00:11:52And red
00:11:53He has forgotten how to drive
00:11:55For the life of him
00:11:56He doesn't know how he even pulled out
00:11:58It was just muscle memory
00:11:59And then he doesn't know what he's doing
00:12:02How cars work
00:12:03How does a car work?
00:12:04We know how cars work?
00:12:06Let's don't drive
00:12:07Let's let, uh, let's have a sober buddy
00:12:09No driving, that's insane
00:12:11You want to be in the passenger seat
00:12:13You don't want to be the driver
00:12:15I want to be driving
00:12:16I don't want to sit there
00:12:18And think, that person is seeing all the things I'm seeing
00:12:21I think I better drive
00:12:23You know when you see those white lines
00:12:25If you look way in the distance
00:12:26They almost look like they're going up
00:12:28And I remember sitting there driving the car
00:12:30And my hands were just doing this by themselves
00:12:32It's almost like I could just sit
00:12:33And look out the window or whatever
00:12:35Because my body was driving the car
00:12:36I eventually stopped
00:12:38I just completely stopped
00:12:39Because it's so steep
00:12:40But I'm not falling back
00:12:43And I don't know how that's possible
00:12:45And then I realize
00:12:46I don't have my foot on the gas
00:12:49I've just coasted to a stop
00:12:52On the Hollywood freeway
00:12:53The road went
00:12:54And disappeared
00:12:57And I saw nothing but total blackness
00:13:01And then there was this tiny little skull
00:13:03At the end of it
00:13:05And it came forward
00:13:07And in the skull was the road
00:13:10And the mouth opened
00:13:11And I got swallowed
00:13:13Don't drive on acid
00:13:16Hi, I'm Tommy Rowe
00:13:28By now it must be obvious to you
00:13:30As it is to me
00:13:31That LSD is very powerful stuff
00:13:34And that's just what it is
00:13:35Stuff
00:13:36Acid and mushrooms are the coke and pepsi of hallucinogens
00:13:46But there are lots of things that can make you trip
00:13:49Ayahuasca
00:13:50DMT
00:13:52Mescaline
00:13:53But these are just the beginning of a list of compounds
00:13:56That can cause the human brain to experience
00:13:59Altered states of reality and hallucinations
00:14:02I decided I would be initiated properly into peyote
00:14:10So I took a plane down to Mexico City
00:14:12And then we went out in a van to the mountains
00:14:16And we met these people
00:14:16Who would initiate me into this peyote cult
00:14:19First of all
00:14:19They cram massive amounts of peyote into your mouth
00:14:22I mean huge amounts
00:14:23With strickening
00:14:25And you look at this thing
00:14:27And you think
00:14:27This is poison
00:14:28You know
00:14:29They keep stuffing it in
00:14:31And very quickly
00:14:33I'm very high
00:14:35And you know
00:14:36I mean the desert already is a surreal
00:14:38Psychedelic experience
00:14:40You know
00:14:40You just have to look at one of these gigantic cacti
00:14:43You're in this primal alien world
00:14:45And then they blindfolded me
00:14:52With three other initiates
00:14:54When you have your eyes closed
00:14:56You're in this three-dimensional cartoon world
00:14:59You're in this kind of space movie
00:15:02And we were forced to climb the sacred mountain
00:15:05I've forgotten the name of the sacred mountain
00:15:07Blindfolded high on peyote
00:15:10In the midday sun
00:15:11So we're stumbling up this mountain
00:15:15And it's quite a hike
00:15:16Anyway, eventually we get to the top in the early evening
00:15:20And I feel this kind of sprinkling
00:15:21On my head
00:15:23And I'm like, oh god
00:15:23They're giving me a shower
00:15:25Because I'm filthy dirty
00:15:26And I open my eyes
00:15:27And it's blood
00:15:28I said, what is this?
00:15:31Oh, it's deer's blood
00:15:32It's part of it
00:15:33I think deer's blood poured on top
00:15:35And it was during the time
00:15:40Of Halley's Comet
00:15:41And Halley's Comet
00:15:42Is quite something
00:15:43Especially when you're on peyote
00:15:45Because it looks
00:15:46Like a fiery dragon
00:15:47Quite fearsome
00:15:51And threatening
00:15:52But it didn't frighten me
00:15:53As much as this concept of mortality
00:15:57Which is a constant with me
00:15:59This was something
00:16:00Difficult
00:16:02And I think meaningful
00:16:05I think meaningful
00:16:17Drugs are great
00:16:22Psychedelics are so cool
00:16:25I love hallucinogens
00:16:27Give me some
00:16:28Now
00:16:29These are just some of the things
00:16:31You'll hear on a typical playground these days
00:16:34Does that scare you?
00:16:36It should
00:16:36Because today's kids are increasingly
00:16:39Turning on, tuning in
00:16:41And dropping out
00:16:42Now how do us squares
00:16:44Wrap our heads around this terrifying trend?
00:16:47Well, we watch videos
00:16:49Like this one
00:16:50About one little girl
00:16:51Let's call her Emily
00:16:53Because that is her name
00:16:55And her
00:16:56Bad trip
00:16:58Hey guys, what's up?
00:17:09So Emily, I'm throwing a party tonight
00:17:11And it'd be pretty rad if you came by
00:17:14No, remember we were gonna go have fun
00:17:16At your place doing safe stuff
00:17:18Under your mom's supervision
00:17:19Parents get a bad rap
00:17:20But they're not so bad
00:17:22To hang around with
00:17:23Come on, Emily
00:17:25It'll be fun
00:17:26There'll be tons of hard drugs there
00:17:27Okay, maybe I'll see you there
00:17:30I mean, how bad could it be?
00:17:33I was ready for some hard drugs
00:17:44Got some LSD, some mushrooms
00:17:47Acid, some blue heaven
00:17:49Purple haze
00:17:50I got blue sky on Mars
00:17:53I got grandma's dentures
00:17:55I got Pac-Man
00:17:56We got Super Mario's
00:17:58We got Luigi's
00:17:59We got Reagan's
00:18:01And some orange sunshine
00:18:02Oh, I'm in
00:18:05Orange sunshine doesn't sound too bad
00:18:13It has lots of names, Emily
00:18:15But it doesn't take being a math nerd like Maya
00:18:18To know what it equals
00:18:19A bad trip
00:18:22Come on, Emily, just try one
00:18:28Maybe just one
00:18:29Don't do it, Emily
00:18:31Think about your future, Emily
00:18:32I think I'm tripping
00:18:38Weird
00:18:41That's every acid trip in a movie
00:18:45They have never, ever nailed it
00:18:47They always, in movies, will use, like, a fisheye lens
00:18:51They always pitch the person's voice way down
00:18:55So everything just looks distorted, you know
00:18:58And the person's like
00:18:59Hey, man, I'm on acid
00:19:01Oh, my God, I can feel my soul
00:19:05The one thing I've seen in a movie that was pretty close was in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
00:19:10There's a scene where Johnny Depp is in the casino
00:19:13And the floor is, like, kind of moving around and stuff
00:19:18Like, when I saw that, I was like, yes
00:19:21That, that's acid
00:19:23I don't know how much acid you've taken
00:19:25But one of the constants in most of my trips during that period
00:19:28Is things would always happen while high on acid
00:19:31That under no ordinary circumstances would happen
00:19:35Strange, and in this case, terrible things
00:19:37Hi, my name's Anthony Bourdain
00:19:49I liked LSD a lot
00:19:53You know, I became a teenager just as the 60s were ending
00:19:57And, you know, I was cruelly disappointed that I'd sort of missed out on the entire hippie era
00:20:03You know, I'd read about them in Life magazine, you know, when I was 9 and 10 years old
00:20:08And that looked really good
00:20:09I thought, you know, I can't wait till I'm old enough to go to San Francisco and, and, and take acid
00:20:14You know, the people are jumping out windows and stuff
00:20:16It must be interesting
00:20:17And, you know, my parents were horrified by it
00:20:20So that was something of an endorsement
00:20:22I know I was fully in the thrall of the works of Hunter S. Thompson
00:20:27And by fully in the thrall, I mean
00:20:30We thought Hunter Thompson was the coolest thing ever
00:20:34And we wanted to be just like him
00:20:36You know, there's that Thompson image of, you know, you know, you're having a bad trip
00:20:40I think when you look down, you see your dead grandmother with a knife in her teeth crawling up your leg
00:20:45That was funny to us
00:20:46And we kind of, we wanted to, if not experience that, to survive that
00:20:50For this weekend, we prepared ourselves for an early version of the road trip
00:20:55I told my parents that I was staying over at my friend's house for a sleepover weekend
00:20:59He had used the car and, I think, a learner's permit
00:21:03This was the basic framework around which our master plan coalesced
00:21:08First, we acquired some drugs
00:21:10A lot of acid, some weed, some Lebanese hash, Gordon's gin
00:21:14Two cases of Maximus Super Beer
00:21:16I don't know why we chose that brand
00:21:18Also, and this is important
00:21:20Some Quaaludes
00:21:21And proceeded to take a lot of the drugs, including the LSD
00:21:25We sent out for Dark Heart of the Catskills
00:21:34So we're driving along, getting off on the acid
00:21:37And we encounter two hitchhikers
00:21:40Attractive-looking young women
00:21:41They were exotic dancers
00:21:43One of them identified herself by the name Panama Red
00:21:47Experienced young women of the world in search of a ride
00:21:50We immediately let it slip as well
00:21:52And we were fully loaded with a pretty dizzying array of controlled substances
00:21:57Unsurprisingly enough, this interested these two young, delicate flowers
00:22:00We went back to her room
00:22:04And we smoked some weed
00:22:06We smoked some hash
00:22:07Uh-oh, careful
00:22:10He's gonna attack
00:22:11Then she reminded us that we had mentioned Quaaludes
00:22:20And I gave her one
00:22:23And she seemed to indicate that this was unsatisfactory
00:22:26That she would like two
00:22:27Two Power S 400s
00:22:28Now these motherfuckers were industrial strength
00:22:30Powerful fucking Methacoylum
00:22:33Panama starts, with the help of all that liquor
00:22:35Starts getting pretty high on that Quaalude as it's hitting in
00:22:38We are by this point, huh, we're peaking, okay
00:22:41Bad part, things started to go wrong
00:22:45Well, things went wrong very quickly
00:22:49And Panama starts modeling her outfits from her earlier years in Vegas
00:22:54Suddenly, Panama, mid-stride, her eyes roll up in her head
00:23:02And she keels over, stone dead, on the fucking floor
00:23:06She's OD'd, she's dead
00:23:21And we've given her the drugs that have killed her
00:23:23Already in my mind, the police helicopters with their searchlights
00:23:26Swooping over the motel at any minute
00:23:29There will be, you know, special units with battering rams
00:23:33Coming in the windows and the doors
00:23:35What do we do now?
00:23:38You know, my parents think I'm sleeping at your house
00:23:40And we're high, we're really, really high
00:23:43On the way over here, you know, the sky is filled with
00:23:46Colors and concentric circles
00:23:48And strange and, you know, wonderful things
00:23:51Now it's ugly and paranoid
00:23:53Reality has intruded in a seriously ugly way
00:23:57Before we came close to figuring out what happened
00:24:01She stirred and roused herself
00:24:04As if nothing had happened, frankly
00:24:06Just stood up as if she collapses to the floor all the time
00:24:09We drank a lot of gin and distorted coke off the Gideon's Bible
00:24:17I remember at one point excusing myself to go to the bathroom
00:24:19And looking in the mirror and seeing, you know, an Indian chief in full war paint
00:24:25In the mirror, you know, looking up
00:24:27And looking in a mirror is never a good idea on acid
00:24:30But in this case it was a really bad idea
00:24:33Don't look in the mirror
00:24:34Don't look in the mirror
00:24:35Cover the mirrors
00:24:36It's not a great idea to look in a mirror
00:24:38Oh, my God, looking in the mirror is, like, the worst
00:24:41Like, looking in the mirror, like, who am I?
00:24:43Who do I see?
00:24:44You can see through your skin
00:24:45Your skin is apparently more translucent
00:24:47When you're tripping
00:24:49You can see, like, the blood rushing through your vessels and the veins
00:24:54Especially if you have any self-esteem issues, you know, it's just like
00:24:57I mean, I've had, like, my face turned into, like, a goat
00:25:00Doesn't matter what you look like
00:25:02Cover the mirrors
00:25:06Don't look in the mirror
00:25:10I'm Dr. Charles Grobe, spelled G-R-O-B
00:25:13I'm a psychiatrist
00:25:15I'm a researcher investigating the potential for a hallucinogen treatment model to heal psychiatric illness
00:25:25Or heal addiction
00:25:26I've also conducted an FDA-approved study where we had permission to use the alkaloid of hallucinogenic mushrooms, psilocybin, in a treatment model for individuals with advanced stage cancer who had reactive anxiety
00:25:41Overall, their quality of life improved noticeably
00:25:46No one had a bad trip
00:25:47No one had a serious physiological reaction
00:25:50So, um, we found that, you know, at the very least there was good potential in this treatment model and worthy of further controlled investigation
00:26:00Let's hear from young people who have had their reasons for being down on LSD
00:26:05Let's also hear from doctors, psychologists, and other experts who have tried LSD themselves
00:26:10The only time I think I've ever been able to understand myself was on an acid trip
00:26:16Then things were really clear
00:26:18You know, I didn't have any one small bad trip
00:26:21I had one long, pretty good one
00:26:24I had outfits that went with acid
00:26:28I had the music that went with acid
00:26:30Makeup that went with acid
00:26:34To me, it was a, um, a ritual drug
00:26:37You want to look at my house?
00:26:39Okay, my house is the acid house
00:26:42It affected everything
00:26:55To me, it's so hilarious to have, like, drug anecdotes
00:27:09The very nature of what you're asking
00:27:12If you're doing drugs the right way, you can't tell an orderly story
00:27:17Hi, I'm Carrie Fisher
00:27:19And I took a lot of LSD
00:27:23I think I'd heard about acid from maybe from John Belushi
00:27:27But I did not have a problem with
00:27:29At that point, I didn't have a problem with drugs
00:27:31I had not gotten into the drug zone
00:27:33That would ultimately prove to be my downfall
00:27:38Which would be opiates
00:27:39You know, it would be hard to get
00:27:41What, are you going to get addicted to acid?
00:27:43You know, no
00:27:44And it's a very hard drug to take
00:27:46So I would organize trips around to places in the world
00:27:51Simply to take acid there
00:27:52I would do these things and forget that
00:27:56I looked like someone named Princess Leia
00:28:01Or whatever I was for people
00:28:03And so it's not a brilliant idea to then, you know, take acid and go running around
00:28:09So yeah, I went to the Seychelles
00:28:11And we took acid and oh my god
00:28:17I was on the beach
00:28:20And there was no one else on the beach
00:28:23And so I'm with my Super 8 movie camera
00:28:30That's when this was
00:28:31And I'm filming my friend
00:28:33And as this is going along
00:28:35Suddenly
00:28:36I sensed that there's been a disturbance in the force
00:28:42Don't put that in
00:28:46Anyway, and I turn around
00:28:48And by the way, I'm
00:28:49I can't imagine that I'm nude
00:28:52But certainly I'm topless
00:28:54And we turn around
00:28:56And there are a busload of Japanese folk that have just arrived
00:29:01And it turns out where we are
00:29:03It's where they bring the tourists to have lunch from all the hotels
00:29:07I am at that time, I believe, Princess Leia
00:29:11In a profound way
00:29:13And not clothed
00:29:16I took acid and went
00:29:18Oh, I see
00:29:20This makes sense
00:29:22And in fact, when I was first told I was bipolar
00:29:26Well, I went in to see a doctor and I said
00:29:29Well, I felt normal on acid
00:29:34Well, why she might feel normal when taking LSD
00:29:38During the height of her fame
00:29:40It may have something to do with how unnatural it felt
00:29:43Being a public persona
00:29:45How disconnected she may have been from herself
00:29:49And how the LSD experience may have allowed her
00:29:53To have accessed some core element
00:29:56Her core self
00:29:58Allow her to feel more genuine in that regard
00:30:00Anyway, what happened was
00:30:02We took this Owsley acid
00:30:05We got really high
00:30:07We're in Central Park
00:30:09I'm holding onto the ground
00:30:12Because it was hard to stay on the planet
00:30:17And I'm watching an acorn
00:30:22And it's moving a lot
00:30:25I never saw anything that wasn't there
00:30:29I just saw things that were there misbehave
00:30:32Holy shit
00:30:39You're Carrie Fisher
00:30:40You're fucking Princess Leia
00:30:43Oh my god, I'm such a huge fan of yours
00:30:46And it's misbehaving
00:30:48Look at this
00:30:49I got it at a garage sale, huh?
00:30:51Whoa, whoa, whoa
00:30:53And misbehaving
00:30:54I'm talking to you
00:30:55Because you're tripping your fucking balls off
00:30:58No, just
00:30:59Ah, no, no, no
00:31:01So I had to watch this acorn
00:31:04You know, basically choreograph itself
00:31:08You're in show business
00:31:09Can I run something by you?
00:31:10Tell me what you think, okay?
00:31:12I'm a nut
00:31:13I'm a nut
00:31:15I'm a nut
00:31:17Nut, nut, nut, nut, nut, nut, nut
00:31:19I'm nuts
00:31:19I'm a nut
00:31:20What do you think?
00:31:22I'm still, you know
00:31:22Shut up!
00:31:24Oh
00:31:24You don't like it
00:31:26So at that point
00:31:28The acorn was almost back to being itself
00:31:31Don't tell anybody what you saw here
00:31:34Shh
00:31:35Shh
00:31:38Don't say nothing
00:31:40As a psychologist
00:31:45I have to tell you that the understanding you think you have gained
00:31:48Just doesn't fit in with the facts
00:31:50The only real understanding you could gain
00:31:52Would come from having a bummer and then analyzing it
00:31:55Which would mean you'd have to want to try to have bummers
00:31:58And then attempt to understand them the way that psychologists analyze dreams
00:32:02Which, unless you are properly trained, you cannot do by yourself
00:32:07Drugs change your state of consciousness very dramatically
00:32:13So you run the risk of psychosis or what's called a bad trip
00:32:19A bad trip is minimized the more you control your set and setting
00:32:24A set is who's the person having this experience, their mindset, their vulnerabilities, their intention
00:32:30Setting is where you're doing it, how safe is the setting
00:32:34Don't take acid with strangers or people who pretend to be your friends or friends of friends
00:32:41Pick your company well
00:32:43Do not ever take LSD with assholes
00:32:45You know, you don't want somebody doing that, freaking out
00:32:48Oh, you feel it?
00:32:49Oh, you feel your mind cracking?
00:32:51Ha, ha, ha, that is so crazy
00:32:54Do you see pink elephants, man? Do you see pink elephants?
00:32:57If you've got a deep sadness or a problem, that can often be dangerously enhanced
00:33:02You don't want a bunch of crazy stuff going on in your head
00:33:06Like bad stuff that, you know, you're dealing with
00:33:08Like, oh, I just broke up with somebody
00:33:09Or I got caught masturbating in the coffee machine
00:33:12Because that sort of guilt and shame, you know, just becomes bigger
00:33:17So you want to make sure you're strong mentally
00:33:19It's a journey that everyone must take on their own
00:33:22With friends
00:33:23Hang out with a couple of good friends in an enclosed space
00:33:26Not enclosed, with some outdoors
00:33:28Enjoy the outdoors
00:33:29I'd suggest the woods, that's it
00:33:31The woods, water nearby, flowing river, fucking trees, some beauty
00:33:36People always say that you should trip in a meadow or somewhere natural
00:33:41And that's probably great, but I've never done that
00:33:43I've always been in New York City
00:33:44The first time I went to New York and just got high, I thought the taxis were out to kill me
00:33:50Stay away from cities
00:33:51And now back to Bad Trip
00:34:03Everyone will tell you that taking a trip will be fine as long as you control your set and setting
00:34:09But the only thing that is sure is you are set on setting out on a bad trip
00:34:16Orange you glad we're friends
00:34:26I don't know, orange you
00:34:30You guys are acting really weird
00:34:34Yeah guys, knock it off, it's not funny anymore
00:34:37Well you know what would be funny?
00:34:38If I jumped out of a window
00:34:39That sounds like a great idea
00:34:42Yeah, do it
00:34:43Okay
00:34:43What?
00:34:45No!
00:34:47Not the window!
00:34:48Not the window!
00:34:53Oh, drugs are a laugh riot
00:35:03Until they're not
00:35:04Hi, my name is Nick Kroll
00:35:13And I have a cautionary tale to tell about tripping
00:35:16Um, you know, it was super fun
00:35:19I just want to caution people about that
00:35:20A couple years ago
00:35:32Uh, my friend's bachelor party
00:35:34Rented a house up in Malibu
00:35:36And I procured a bunch of mushrooms for it
00:35:39Because, you know, dudes in their mid to late 30s
00:35:43Are just looking to, you know, fucking escape
00:35:47People were, uh, smoking salvia
00:35:50So you knew it was a classy affair
00:35:52We're on some private beach in Malibu
00:35:57We all take mushrooms
00:35:58I take a few more just to be like
00:36:00Yeah, this is cool
00:36:00These are good
00:36:01This is fun
00:36:01Oh, I love my friends
00:36:05So we're all having a good time
00:36:07I'm thinking
00:36:08I'm in the water
00:36:09I'm tripping
00:36:09There's a 90% chance I'm gonna drown
00:36:12But it's feeling good to be one with the earth
00:36:16We get out of the water
00:36:17Now I'm on the beach
00:36:19I'm starting to really roll
00:36:20And, uh, I sit down
00:36:22And I have eaten more mushrooms than everybody else
00:36:24I see my buddies
00:36:25And they are starting to gather a bunch of sea kelp
00:36:29I see this
00:36:30And I'm like
00:36:30I understand what's gonna happen now
00:36:32Okay
00:36:33They've come out of the water
00:36:35They are emerging
00:36:36With about 40 to 50 pounds
00:36:38And I just see them lifted
00:36:40And just put all of the sea kelp on my body
00:36:43And I was thrilled
00:36:48And the sea kelp starts to move on me
00:36:52And I'm like
00:36:52I am the kelp monster
00:36:53I am the kelp monster
00:36:55I couldn't even fathom wanting to remove
00:37:05This fucking detritus from the sea
00:37:09Kelp monster
00:37:10Uh, the next day I woke up
00:37:13Uh, covered in, uh, red welts
00:37:15Um, because I had, uh, uh, been covered in sea fucking kelp
00:37:22For 45 minutes
00:37:24I don't really dig dropping pills
00:37:27But you get the wildest trip on acid
00:37:29Yeah, but you can also get the wildest bummers
00:37:31You know when there's, like, four corners or whatever
00:37:34And you kind of get trained by stoplights
00:37:38Or by, like, the walk sign and the don't walk sign or whatever
00:37:41And I remember all of a sudden being like
00:37:42Oh, I want to get over there
00:37:46And instead of going from here
00:37:48From point A to point B to point C
00:37:50I was like
00:37:50I could just go from point A to point C
00:37:53And, like, that was some
00:37:56It sounds really stupid
00:37:57But it's something acid gave me
00:37:59And then in my life
00:38:00I use it all the time
00:38:01Where I'm like
00:38:01If no one's looking
00:38:03I can just head straight to point C
00:38:05Without doing this point B bullshit
00:38:08So I'm Kathleen
00:38:20And this is Adam
00:38:21We're married
00:38:21We're both musicians
00:38:22To the others
00:38:24My story that I wanted to tell
00:38:26Isn't, isn't, uh
00:38:28I've never had a bad
00:38:29Like a bad acid trip
00:38:31Or a bad mushroom trip
00:38:32Like a freakout
00:38:34Late 80s
00:38:34I was, uh, with three friends
00:38:36We were driving to
00:38:37My friend, uh, Monty Mark
00:38:38Said, you gotta go to this place in Baja
00:38:40It's me and three women
00:38:41And we're just, like, in the middle of nowhere
00:38:43In Mexico
00:38:44My friend was like
00:38:46Oh, I've got two hits of acid
00:38:47We should take them
00:38:48So, uh, we put them in a Snapple bottle
00:38:51And we all drank it
00:38:51And a tire blows
00:39:02It's me and three women
00:39:03And we're just, like, in the middle of nowhere
00:39:05I don't know how to change a tire
00:39:07I don't even know if there was a tire
00:39:08You know, now that
00:39:09As I'm saying it
00:39:10I don't even know
00:39:10I can't believe you didn't know
00:39:11How to drive a
00:39:12Change a tire
00:39:13I don't even know if we looked
00:39:14To see if there was another tire
00:39:15As we're like
00:39:19This is really grim
00:39:21A white owl flies right above us
00:39:25And we're like
00:39:26It's a sign
00:39:27Something great's about to happen
00:39:29These two vans
00:39:31Filled with dudes
00:39:32Like grown men
00:39:34Pull up
00:39:34And we're like
00:39:35Oh, this is great
00:39:36Oh, shit, this is a little weird
00:39:37All these guys come out
00:39:39And they're kind of walking around the car
00:39:40Checking us out
00:39:41There's, like, three hot girls in the car
00:39:43If I go with them
00:39:44They'll take me to a place
00:39:45To a guy who has tires
00:39:47And so I'm like
00:39:48Look, um
00:39:48I don't know if I'm coming back
00:39:50You guys
00:39:51And so we do the four-way hug
00:39:52And we're like
00:39:53You know, good luck
00:39:54And so we drive
00:39:56And we drive
00:39:57And we take a turn
00:39:58Further into the mountains
00:39:59And it's like
00:40:00It's right out of a movie
00:40:01And there's all these old dudes
00:40:02Sitting around by a fire
00:40:03A campfire
00:40:04And there's these two cinderblock shacks
00:40:07And I'm like
00:40:09Over there
00:40:10Out of the shack
00:40:13Comes the biggest person
00:40:15You've ever
00:40:16Ever seen
00:40:17Overalls
00:40:18No shirt
00:40:19He's backlit
00:40:20With the biggest fucking hammer
00:40:22You've ever seen in your life
00:40:23The more I was freaking out
00:40:25The more they were laughing at me
00:40:26And he turns over
00:40:27And then he starts
00:40:28Banging on the door
00:40:29He opens the door
00:40:33I'm like
00:40:33Alright, this is it
00:40:35I try to fight everybody here
00:40:38To get out
00:40:39Or I see what's in the room
00:40:40Turns the light on
00:40:44And it's filled with fucking tires
00:40:45It's filled with tires
00:40:47It's a church group
00:40:48The two vans
00:40:50Are from a church group
00:40:51And they led us on their way
00:40:52They told us
00:40:53Go back down this way
00:40:54And wow
00:40:55It all worked out fine
00:40:56It was the owl
00:40:57This is your brain
00:41:05This is your brain
00:41:07This is your brain
00:41:08This is your brain
00:41:10This is your brain on drugs
00:41:13And this is your brain on my sandwich
00:41:22Delicious
00:41:27Always that same LSD story
00:41:30You've all seen it
00:41:31Young man on acid
00:41:32Thought he could fly
00:41:33Jumped out of a building
00:41:34What a tragedy
00:41:35What a dick
00:41:37Fuck him
00:41:38He's an idiot
00:41:39If he thought he could fly
00:41:40Why didn't he take off
00:41:41On the ground first
00:41:42There isn't a lot of stories
00:41:45Of people leaping
00:41:47You know
00:41:47That was the thing
00:41:48There was a lot of shit
00:41:49That was coming down the pike
00:41:50When we were originally taking it
00:41:53You know
00:41:53To kind of scare us off
00:41:54Both my parents
00:41:55Were therapists
00:41:56And they worked
00:41:57In this psychiatric hospital
00:41:59And I guess
00:42:01The way my parents
00:42:01Telling me not to do drugs
00:42:03Was by coming home
00:42:04And telling me
00:42:05How messed up the kids were
00:42:07At the hospital
00:42:08Who did drugs only once
00:42:09My mom would be like
00:42:10This kid smoked marijuana
00:42:12And it was laced with PCP
00:42:14And now he's insane
00:42:15He doesn't know what to do
00:42:16He puts a fist up his butt
00:42:18That's all he does
00:42:19That was literally a story
00:42:20My mom told me
00:42:22So I had the fear of God in me
00:42:24About doing any sort of drugs
00:42:26Whatsoever
00:42:27I never did it
00:42:28That is until
00:42:29I went to Amsterdam
00:42:30Hey I'm Paul Scheer
00:42:41And this is my story
00:42:43About getting
00:42:44Ridiculously high
00:42:46I went to Amsterdam
00:42:47With a bunch of my comedy friends
00:42:48To do some shows
00:42:49And it was like
00:42:51Wow Amsterdam
00:42:51Like marijuana's legal
00:42:53Oh wow
00:42:53You could even do mushrooms
00:42:54This is gonna be amazing
00:42:55Alright
00:42:55We have to have
00:42:57A mushroom day
00:42:58And we finally went to a shop
00:42:59And you know
00:43:00They kind of bring them out
00:43:02Like you would bring out
00:43:02Diamonds at Tiffany's
00:43:04You know
00:43:04They have like
00:43:05Different types of mushrooms
00:43:06And we picked them
00:43:08I remember I picked something
00:43:09That was like
00:43:09Hawaiian something
00:43:11I was like
00:43:11Hawaii that's cool
00:43:12Yeah like surfing
00:43:13That's the kind of trip I want
00:43:14So we decided
00:43:15Where's the best place to do it
00:43:17And it would have to be
00:43:18The Van Gogh Museum
00:43:20So we go into the Van Gogh Museum
00:43:22And you know
00:43:23We're just eating these mushrooms
00:43:25They say don't eat the whole thing
00:43:26All at once
00:43:26We're like alright fine
00:43:27So I'm eating these mushrooms
00:43:29And it's about five minutes past
00:43:31I'm like
00:43:31I don't feel anything
00:43:33These mushrooms don't work at all
00:43:35Well
00:43:40I'm Paul Sheeran Amsterdam
00:43:43And I guess these mushrooms
00:43:45Aren't kicking in
00:43:46And so I just eat more of them
00:43:48And then more of them
00:43:49Well I guess I'll just enjoy the art
00:43:52I'm Paul Sheeran Amsterdam
00:43:53I look up at one of the paintings
00:43:56Which is
00:43:56The Crows Over the Cornfield
00:43:58And it really like grabs me for some reason
00:44:01Wow this is really interesting
00:44:03And I go oh look at that
00:44:04I can see under the crows
00:44:06I start to turn
00:44:07Because I'm convincing myself
00:44:08That if I turn
00:44:09I'm seeing parts of the painting
00:44:11That don't really exist
00:44:13Holy shit
00:44:15Look at all this corn
00:44:17All of a sudden
00:44:18I feel like these birds
00:44:20Are coming out at me
00:44:21And I'm in the middle of this cornfield
00:44:22Whoa
00:44:23What the fuck
00:44:25Now this is a popular museum family
00:44:27People are all there
00:44:29And I'm standing maybe
00:44:30Four inches away from the painting
00:44:33Almost upside down
00:44:35Like this
00:44:36Like yes
00:44:37Yes
00:44:38Yes
00:44:38And it's morphing and moving
00:44:42I'm like
00:44:42Van Gogh
00:44:43Genius
00:44:44I get Van Gogh
00:44:46I get Van Gogh
00:44:48Now I'm feeling a little bit too hot
00:44:50I'm like oh
00:44:50It's hot in here
00:44:51I'm sweating
00:44:51I'm like
00:44:52I gotta leave this museum
00:44:53I arrive back
00:44:54At the house that we're staying
00:44:55And I go
00:44:56Guys
00:44:57We need to get
00:44:58McDonald's
00:45:00And everyone's like
00:45:01Yes
00:45:01And I think my plan
00:45:02Stemmed from the fact
00:45:03That we were in a foreign country
00:45:04And we needed to ground ourselves
00:45:06With something American
00:45:07So McDonald's was the way to go
00:45:09And I go to McDonald's
00:45:10They fill up a sack of burgers for me
00:45:12I take it back to our house
00:45:14And I toss them out to everybody
00:45:16Everyone starts eating the burgers
00:45:17And just like in Alice in Wonderland
00:45:19When she eats the pill
00:45:20We all finish our burgers
00:45:22And it just wears off
00:45:24We're back to normal
00:45:25And it's like
00:45:26Thank you McDonald's
00:45:27You saved us
00:45:28Never had experience in McDonald's
00:45:30Because I'm not a fucking idiot
00:45:31If there's anything antithetical
00:45:33To a trip on LSD
00:45:35It's a McDonald's
00:45:36Talk about yin and fuck yang
00:45:38You walk in there
00:45:39And you realize
00:45:40I'm in the belly of the fucking beast
00:45:42I have a soul
00:45:43And I'm in a soulless cage
00:45:46Hi
00:45:56I'm Rob Corddry
00:45:58A psychonaut
00:46:00Screen Actors Guild
00:46:02Once we were on Mushrooms
00:46:04And I sat in front of the mirror
00:46:05Tripping my balls off
00:46:07High as a kite
00:46:08Just like staring at myself in the mirror
00:46:10I had my shirt off
00:46:14Which is usually something that bugs me
00:46:17But at this point
00:46:18Like you don't have any body dysmorphia
00:46:21You see things for the way they really are
00:46:24No matter how much they sort of like shimmer and breathe
00:46:27And your body's breathing anyway
00:46:28And I'm like looking at it
00:46:30For my body and my face
00:46:32For what it really, really, truly is
00:46:35You know, my face looked completely different
00:46:38My body
00:46:38I understood it was a shell
00:46:40And I felt inside me
00:46:42The real me
00:46:43Not in the mirror
00:46:43I felt bigger than my body
00:46:45And I felt wider
00:46:46And I felt like
00:46:47Oh, this is it
00:46:48Like we're part of everything
00:46:50Everything is connected
00:46:51And then I would look in the mirror
00:46:52And I'd be like
00:46:53I could see
00:46:55It seemed
00:46:56Like
00:46:57The whole
00:46:59World was me
00:47:01I could see everything
00:47:02Everything was connected
00:47:03All good
00:47:04You know, people always say
00:47:05Don't look at a mirror
00:47:06When you're high
00:47:07But I'm like
00:47:07Don't ever leave a mirror
00:47:09Do look in the mirror
00:47:16I remember looking in the mirror
00:47:18And my face turned into a gargoyle
00:47:21That shit was trippy
00:47:22I was like
00:47:23Oh, shit
00:47:23Growing up in an urban community
00:47:33Like the hood
00:47:34Or some shit like that
00:47:35We look at acid
00:47:36Like, man
00:47:37That's like crack
00:47:38Or like PCP
00:47:40Like some meth
00:47:41Or some shit like that
00:47:42The fucking acid
00:47:44And then as you get older
00:47:46You know, you start
00:47:47You know, doing mushrooms
00:47:48And shit like that
00:47:49And you realize that
00:47:50All it is
00:47:51Is just like
00:47:51Fungus and mold
00:47:52And you know
00:47:53This is just like
00:47:54Some chill shit
00:47:56Yeah, I remember
00:48:07The first time I did acid
00:48:08It was
00:48:09A couple years back
00:48:11I felt I was ready
00:48:12Ready to become one
00:48:14With the planet
00:48:15The universe
00:48:16It was crazy
00:48:17It was with a beautiful female
00:48:19She's the one
00:48:20Who introduced me to it
00:48:22All I remember is
00:48:23She had it on like
00:48:24Crackers already
00:48:25Unfortunately, by the time
00:48:28I got with her
00:48:29Is exactly when the acid
00:48:31Just started kicking in
00:48:32And you know
00:48:33We getting jiggy
00:48:35And whatnot, right?
00:48:36It feels so good
00:48:37Like it's
00:48:38Everything feels intensified
00:48:40I'm seeing all type of shit
00:48:42I'm feeling all type of shit
00:48:44Colors are moving
00:48:45I hear colors
00:48:46I can taste the colors
00:48:47Like what the fuck
00:48:49Does a color taste like?
00:48:50You know what I'm saying?
00:48:52And for some reason
00:48:53Everything she did to me
00:48:55Just felt amazing
00:48:57Like Tom's suit
00:48:58Out of the ordinary
00:49:00And it's a big graphic
00:49:02It's a bit vulgar
00:49:06It's a bit raunchy
00:49:07You feel me?
00:49:08You feel me?
00:49:09But what can I say?
00:49:10It's like
00:49:11No lie
00:49:12A rainbow shot out of my dick
00:49:15And it had a sound with it
00:49:17Like
00:49:17Like a piano
00:49:19Or some shit like that
00:49:20I had no idea
00:49:23Why there was a rainbow
00:49:24Coming out of my penis
00:49:26I don't even like rainbow
00:49:28And I woke up
00:49:30And the next day
00:49:32And I told
00:49:32I told the homie Hams
00:49:35I said
00:49:36Yo
00:49:36I know what the answer
00:49:38To life is
00:49:39And I said
00:49:42It's to love each other
00:49:44He was like
00:49:45Word
00:49:47That was my first time
00:49:51Doing action
00:49:52But to each his own
00:49:54Because
00:49:55I'm not a
00:49:56Psychedelic advocate
00:49:57Like
00:49:58You know
00:49:59I have a good time with it
00:50:00It's not for everybody
00:50:01Let me say that
00:50:02You know
00:50:03I'm artiste
00:50:05It's my lifestyle
00:50:06I'm more in a like
00:50:08Psychedelic
00:50:08Like
00:50:091960s rock
00:50:11Like
00:50:12You know
00:50:12Like
00:50:13The
00:50:13The castaways
00:50:15Jefferson Airplane
00:50:17Rolling Stones
00:50:18Had some shit
00:50:18Fucking Beatles
00:50:19Of course
00:50:20Jimmy
00:50:21Who sings the
00:50:22Hurdy-gurdy man
00:50:23Is that Donovan?
00:50:25A truly
00:50:251960s experience
00:50:28Was
00:50:29Is there an answer
00:50:31To the suffering
00:50:32Of the world
00:50:33Because until
00:50:341966 in October
00:50:36LSD was actually
00:50:39Illegal
00:50:39And was used in
00:50:41Extraordinary
00:50:42Beneficial ways
00:50:43As we all know
00:50:44We know now
00:50:45From documentation
00:50:46How it helped so many people
00:50:48Anxiety drops
00:50:50People are about to die
00:50:52Who get DMT
00:50:53You know the story
00:50:54They're given
00:50:56Some psilocybin
00:50:57And suddenly
00:50:59Anxiety disappears
00:51:00Because they now feel
00:51:01This is natural
00:51:03Never did ayahuasca
00:51:05Or DMT
00:51:06I'm too scared
00:51:07Man
00:51:07You know
00:51:08I'm gonna admit it
00:51:09But maybe I'll get to the point
00:51:10One day when I feel brave enough
00:51:12To do it
00:51:12DMT is like
00:51:13You know
00:51:14That is the express ticket
00:51:15To you know
00:51:16The primordial ooze
00:51:18If you want to see
00:51:18What it is like
00:51:19To be just an organic being
00:51:21Absolutely watch your ego
00:51:22Dissipate into nothingness
00:51:24Smoke some DMT
00:51:25And you will
00:51:26You'll get there
00:51:27You'll get there right away
00:51:28And you'll have
00:51:29Direct contact
00:51:30With aliens
00:51:31And colours
00:51:32And ancient patterns
00:51:34And sacred geometry
00:51:36And it's amazing
00:51:38My name is Zach Leary
00:51:39And I grew up
00:51:42With Timothy Leary
00:51:43He was
00:51:44An American philosopher
00:51:46And psychologist
00:51:47Of the late 20th century
00:51:49The first time that my dad
00:51:51Did psilocybin in Mexico
00:51:53You know
00:51:53His famous quote
00:51:54From the experience
00:51:55Was
00:51:55I learned more
00:51:56On my four hours
00:51:57On mushrooms
00:51:57Than I did
00:51:58In my previous
00:51:5920 years of psychology
00:52:00Naturally the psychologist
00:52:02And psychiatrist
00:52:03Want to use LSD
00:52:04In treating mental illness
00:52:05I think that LSD
00:52:07Will be
00:52:07The number one
00:52:09Cure for mental illness
00:52:11When the psychologist
00:52:13Know how to use it
00:52:14And in 1963
00:52:15He was
00:52:16Fired quite ceremoniously
00:52:19From Harvard University
00:52:21For conducting
00:52:22Secularic experiments
00:52:24With grad students
00:52:25Timothy Leary
00:52:26And Ram Dass
00:52:27And you know
00:52:28Terrence McKenna
00:52:30And all these people
00:52:31Who have spent their lives
00:52:34Exploring those realms
00:52:35And then
00:52:36They had the
00:52:37Also the knowledge
00:52:38And the genius
00:52:39To be able to study them
00:52:40Were just shut down
00:52:41And so
00:52:42We fucking blew it
00:52:44Well I think it was a shame
00:52:46That the
00:52:46The prior
00:52:48Generation of psychedelic
00:52:50Investigators
00:52:51Were abruptly
00:52:53Stopped in their tracks
00:52:54Because they were
00:52:55On to some
00:52:56Very important
00:52:58Discoveries
00:52:59And they were developing
00:53:01New treatment models
00:53:02Which we feel today
00:53:04Should still be explored
00:53:05Because they might offer
00:53:07A great deal of promise
00:53:10And hope for people
00:53:12Who have suffered from conditions
00:53:14For which mainstream psychiatry
00:53:17May not have much to offer
00:53:18There are many basic questions
00:53:20About LSD
00:53:21Which remain unanswered
00:53:23As much work to be done
00:53:24A good deal of important
00:53:26Research lies in the future
00:53:28Hopefully someday
00:53:30We'll have the answers
00:53:31People always ask
00:53:33What my best experiences
00:53:35Were taking psychedelics
00:53:37With my dad
00:53:38You know I mean
00:53:39We had some good ones
00:53:40Like Grateful Dead concerts
00:53:41Yeah the visuals
00:53:42Were really like
00:53:42Gosh I remember
00:53:43Jerry Garcia's head
00:53:45Sort of swelling
00:53:46To ten times the size
00:53:48Going to a Grateful Dead show
00:53:49Without drugs
00:53:50Was okay
00:53:51But with drugs
00:53:55It was pretty good
00:53:57Grateful Dead shows
00:54:01The greatest place
00:54:02To trip
00:54:03Because it was very safe
00:54:05There are
00:54:06Facilities
00:54:07And kind of
00:54:09Makeshift areas
00:54:10Just for people
00:54:12Who are tripping
00:54:12As much as I didn't
00:54:14Care for the music
00:54:14I've probably
00:54:15Seen the dead
00:54:16I mean
00:54:17Yeah I gotta say
00:54:18Like 11, 12 times
00:54:19I like Jerry Garcia
00:54:21I can admit that publicly
00:54:22I'm not ashamed of that
00:54:23I appreciate
00:54:24The Grateful Dead
00:54:25I mean I went to college
00:54:26I'm white
00:54:26I went on stage
00:54:29With the Grateful Dead
00:54:30And fell asleep
00:54:32In front of
00:54:33One of the speakers
00:54:34This is how you spot
00:54:39A guy at a concert
00:54:40Having a good trip
00:54:41This is how they walk
00:54:42Because they're leading
00:54:43With their head
00:54:44They're like
00:54:44Meet in life
00:54:46Head on
00:54:46They're like
00:54:47But then this is how
00:54:50You spot a guy
00:54:51Tripping
00:54:52That's having a bad trip
00:54:53He's leading
00:54:54With his knees
00:54:55He's like
00:54:55He wants the knees
00:54:59He wants everything
00:54:59But the head
00:55:00To meet the bad
00:55:01Bad shit head on
00:55:03One time
00:55:03I had figured
00:55:05The wrong amount
00:55:05And I had taken so much
00:55:08That I
00:55:08I looked over at Mickey
00:55:09And I said
00:55:10I can't finish the set
00:55:11I gotta go to the dressing room
00:55:12My symbols were melting
00:55:13And you know
00:55:15You can take too much
00:55:16And that's a mistake
00:55:17I came home
00:55:18And I was still real high
00:55:19And you know
00:55:20Come down instantly
00:55:21Of course
00:55:21And I sat down politely
00:55:23At my parents
00:55:25Dining room table
00:55:26And mom was
00:55:27It was breakfast
00:55:28Son had just come up
00:55:29And she was serving breakfast
00:55:30Of course
00:55:30And served me
00:55:31A plate of eggs
00:55:33That looked like
00:55:33They were doing
00:55:34Some kind of new
00:55:34Modern dance
00:55:35On the stage
00:55:36You know
00:55:36Some of this new
00:55:37Gyration stuff going on
00:55:38Everything was moving around
00:55:40The sausages were dancing
00:55:41You know
00:55:41Making little buildings
00:55:43And things
00:55:43How's breakfast
00:55:44Billy
00:55:44Fine
00:55:45Oh
00:55:46You're gonna eat it
00:55:48And now
00:55:50Back to
00:55:51Bad Trip
00:55:52Do you like
00:55:55Things happening to you
00:55:56That you wouldn't like
00:55:58Happening to you
00:55:59Of course you don't
00:56:00Well that's exactly
00:56:02What will happen
00:56:02When you go
00:56:03To a drug party
00:56:04Because at every
00:56:06Drug party
00:56:07There's a prankster
00:56:08His mission
00:56:09To get you high
00:56:11Whether you want to be
00:56:12Or not
00:56:13His scheme
00:56:14The dose
00:56:16Guys
00:56:25Come on
00:56:26Orange soda
00:56:26Take a sip
00:56:27Drink it
00:56:28Take a sip
00:56:29Drink it
00:56:29Take a sip
00:56:30Well
00:56:31If they're not
00:56:32Gonna enjoy
00:56:33These fresh sodas
00:56:34I am
00:56:34Yeah
00:56:35Me too
00:56:36Whoa
00:56:44Why is everything
00:56:45Like an electric
00:56:46Rainbow
00:56:47Yeah
00:56:48I can see the whole universe
00:56:50It sounds like
00:56:51It sounds like you guys
00:56:52Are tripping
00:56:52No
00:56:53We didn't take
00:56:54Any drugs
00:56:55That's not something
00:56:56I would ever do
00:56:57Did you see that dragon
00:56:59Are you sure
00:57:00You're not tripping
00:57:02I'm sure they are tripping
00:57:04Because they've been dosed
00:57:05I put ten tabs of LSD
00:57:07In their sodas
00:57:08I never wanted this
00:57:12I'll never be the same
00:57:14I feel it's really wrong to dose anybody
00:57:23Because you're taking over their psychology
00:57:26You're responsible for how they're gonna be for 12 hours
00:57:30And if they haven't taken acid before
00:57:31You don't really have a right to do that
00:57:33When we took the notorious wonder drug LSD
00:57:37We were having dinner with our dentist
00:57:41And he put it in our coffee and never told us
00:57:45And we'd never heard of it
00:57:47I mean it's a good job we hadn't heard of it
00:57:49Because there's been so much paranoia
00:57:51Created around the drug
00:57:54The people now if they take it
00:57:55They're already on a bad trip before they start
00:57:57When the realization came that I was on acid
00:58:00Bad trip
00:58:02Like a dark tunnel
00:58:03I just shot down
00:58:04Hi I'm Rosie Perez
00:58:16A.K.A. Puerto Rican icon
00:58:18Holla
00:58:19It was New Year's Eve
00:58:20In the late 80s
00:58:22One of my sisters and I
00:58:24We were going to an after hours club
00:58:26In Alphabet City
00:58:28They never sold alcohol
00:58:30Or anything at this club
00:58:32It was all like
00:58:33You know we're all into the music and dance
00:58:36And we're into our bodies and health and whatever
00:58:38So they would only have punch there or fruit
00:58:41So we get to the ball
00:58:42We see the bartender
00:58:43And he's like
00:58:44Oh what's up girls
00:58:46You want to get hooked up?
00:58:47We're like yeah sure
00:58:47And he goes yeah
00:58:49I was like yeah all right
00:58:50So he gives us this punch
00:58:53And we drink it down
00:58:54And we start dancing
00:58:55Sweating
00:58:56Go back
00:58:57Can we have another punch?
00:58:59He's like for real?
00:59:01And I said yeah it's really good
00:59:02He goes all right
00:59:03We drink another glass
00:59:05All of a sudden
00:59:06The entire nightclub
00:59:08Started to expand
00:59:10The floorboards
00:59:11The wooden floorboards
00:59:12Were waving
00:59:14As if they were water
00:59:15On the high seas
00:59:17And I'm looking at it
00:59:18Going this is beautiful
00:59:20Oh my gosh
00:59:22So I went on my back
00:59:24And I started doing the backstroke
00:59:25On the floorboards
00:59:26Because they were waves
00:59:27Of course
00:59:28Right?
00:59:29And I think this is beautiful
00:59:30And everybody's watching me
00:59:32And I'm just like
00:59:32In my glory
00:59:33And then all of a sudden
00:59:34My sister Sally
00:59:35Walks over and goes
00:59:36Your tits are out
00:59:36And I went
00:59:37Oh
00:59:37And I looked down
00:59:40And I was like
00:59:41Oh my god
00:59:42They look gorgeous
00:59:43And they looked beautiful
00:59:46And I was like
00:59:47In awe of their beauty
00:59:49And their size
00:59:50But then I started
00:59:51Looking around
00:59:52And I thought
00:59:53Everybody was looking at me
00:59:54Right?
00:59:55And I got real paranoid
00:59:56So I kept trying to
00:59:57Cover them up
00:59:58Because I couldn't find my top
01:00:00Because my top
01:00:00Was floating in the wood
01:00:01Of water
01:00:02Right?
01:00:02So I'm covering
01:00:03My breasts like this
01:00:04And my titty fat
01:00:05Kept squeezing
01:00:06Between my fingers
01:00:08Right?
01:00:09And so it was like
01:00:10My sister comes over
01:00:15And she starts cracking up
01:00:16She goes
01:00:16Come on
01:00:17We gotta get out of here
01:00:17We gotta get out of here
01:00:18Get to the house
01:00:19Get upstairs
01:00:20And when I laid into the bed
01:00:22I became the bed
01:00:23My body was the bed
01:00:25And I'm trying to
01:00:26Flip myself over
01:00:27Like my body
01:00:28That's the mattress
01:00:29And I'm waddling
01:00:30Down the hallway
01:00:31Still didn't occur to me
01:00:33That I was high on acid
01:00:34And I slid
01:00:37And I'm thinking
01:00:38That the hallway
01:00:38Has now become a slide
01:00:40And I'm sliding down
01:00:41The hallway
01:00:42All the way down
01:00:43I went on my bed
01:00:45And I slid
01:00:48And I busted my ankle
01:00:52On the porcelain bathtub
01:00:53Then I thought my foot
01:00:55Was this humongous thing
01:00:56And it just kept growing
01:00:57And growing and growing
01:00:58And growing
01:00:58I look up
01:00:59And my boyfriend
01:01:00He tells me
01:01:01You're high on acid
01:01:03My first thought
01:01:07Wasn't
01:01:07Oh my god
01:01:09I'm high on acid
01:01:10My first thought was
01:01:11Oh my god
01:01:12I hope god doesn't punish me
01:01:14Because I'm high on acid
01:01:15Because I just thought
01:01:17You know
01:01:18He has
01:01:18I'm going to hell
01:01:19I'm going straight to hell
01:01:20Prior to this
01:01:22I didn't drink
01:01:24I didn't smoke weed
01:01:25I didn't smoke cigarettes
01:01:27I did nothing
01:01:28My high was dancing
01:01:29When you go to a nightclub
01:01:34And someone offers you
01:01:35A free drink
01:01:35Ask what the fuck is in it
01:01:37Yeah
01:01:40The other part of it
01:01:41That I got from it
01:01:43Is that I really
01:01:44Really needed
01:01:45To seek therapy
01:01:46In regards to my
01:01:47Catholic upbringing
01:01:49God forbid
01:01:50I never want to be
01:01:51Burdened with that much guilt
01:01:53Ever again in my life
01:01:55So you know what
01:01:56I guess being on acid
01:01:57Did kind of do me good
01:01:59The mental effects
01:02:00Of this material
01:02:01Are tremendously variable
01:02:04They are completely
01:02:05Unpredictable
01:02:06You cannot tell
01:02:08For any given individual
01:02:10If he's going to have
01:02:11A good trip
01:02:12Or a bad trip
01:02:13I don't think
01:02:15They've been able
01:02:15To identify
01:02:16The foci in the brain
01:02:17That might be responsible
01:02:18For a bad trip
01:02:19But internally
01:02:20What's going on
01:02:21Is a sense of
01:02:23Disorientation
01:02:24Confusion
01:02:25A sense of being
01:02:26Overwhelmed
01:02:27By stimuli
01:02:28High levels of anxiety
01:02:30Even bordering
01:02:31Or going into paranoia
01:02:33I've done a lot of acid
01:02:34I've done shrooms
01:02:35I've done speed
01:02:36I don't know
01:02:37What this was
01:02:38It was very speedy
01:02:39Very speedy
01:02:40Oh yeah
01:02:41But you also
01:02:42Hallucinated
01:02:43It turned the world
01:02:45Around you
01:02:45Yeah
01:02:46Into an opera
01:02:47Of your nightmares
01:02:49Yeah
01:02:49Everything in my brain
01:02:50Just switched
01:02:51And everything went
01:02:53Drastically downhill
01:02:54Like
01:02:54At an incredible rate
01:02:56Things would turn
01:02:57Into glass and crystal
01:02:58And then they would break
01:02:59And then they would form
01:03:00Back up in front of your eyes
01:03:01And then they would break again
01:03:02My legs started to go numb
01:03:04I started to feel my heartbeat
01:03:06In my chest really quickly
01:03:08And it felt like
01:03:09It was going to pound
01:03:10Through my rib cage
01:03:11I
01:03:12Didn't want to say anything
01:03:14To my wife
01:03:15Because I didn't want her
01:03:16To affirm
01:03:18How strong this was
01:03:20And then my paranoia
01:03:21Would increase even more
01:03:22Making the nightmare
01:03:23That much more intense
01:03:25I saw violence
01:03:26I saw bloodshed
01:03:27I saw warfare
01:03:29I saw terrorism
01:03:30I saw beheadings
01:03:32I saw hell
01:03:34At one point
01:03:35I remember looking
01:03:36Out the window of the car
01:03:37And there was
01:03:37A little girl
01:03:38In the backseat of the car
01:03:39Next to us
01:03:40Like looking at me
01:03:41Like really intensely
01:03:42This little girl
01:03:43Can save me
01:03:44This little girl
01:03:45Can get help
01:03:46She can get me
01:03:47Out of this situation
01:03:48She was a child
01:03:49She was innocent
01:03:50I remember trying
01:03:51To communicate to her
01:03:52With my eyes
01:03:53Like I was a hostage
01:03:55And like
01:03:56Get me, honey
01:03:57Like I didn't want to talk
01:03:59Because I didn't want
01:03:59My friend to hear me
01:04:01And kill me
01:04:01And so I was like
01:04:03I can see
01:04:04I can see there's
01:04:04A glimmer of hope
01:04:05Finally the little girl
01:04:07Like flips me off
01:04:08And in my head
01:04:10I'm like
01:04:10I think everybody
01:04:11Is in on this
01:04:12Everybody is trying
01:04:13To kill me
01:04:14Some people
01:04:15Will reach the peak
01:04:18Of these mental effects
01:04:19Right here
01:04:20And they will stay there
01:04:21From here on out
01:04:25These people are insane
01:04:26I'm Louis Black
01:04:29And I'm Louis
01:04:31Still Louis Black
01:04:32That's all I need to say
01:04:33Is I'm Louis Black
01:04:34Right
01:04:35I did acid
01:04:46When I was about 20
01:04:47I took it in an apartment
01:04:49In a place called
01:04:50Hyattsville, Maryland
01:04:51When you reach this point
01:04:53You're gone
01:04:55And the point I got to
01:04:56Is I couldn't remember my name
01:04:58And it's
01:05:00I can't remember my name
01:05:03At all
01:05:04One of the things
01:05:06That is a linchpin
01:05:07Between you
01:05:08And those around you
01:05:09Is your fucking name
01:05:10It's kind of really important
01:05:12The shortest distance
01:05:13Between two points
01:05:14Is for me to just turn
01:05:16To one of them
01:05:16And say
01:05:17What's my name
01:05:17But you can't
01:05:18In the middle
01:05:19Of an acid trip
01:05:20Turn to your friends
01:05:22And ask them
01:05:23What your name is
01:05:24Now I don't know
01:05:25What acid etiquette is
01:05:26But I just thought
01:05:27You don't
01:05:28You know
01:05:29They're having fun
01:05:30There's no reason
01:05:30That I should destroy
01:05:31Their fun
01:05:32Nor should I bring up
01:05:34Something that
01:05:34Would show as if
01:05:35I'm in trouble
01:05:36So that they would feel
01:05:37Like they had to
01:05:38Take care of me
01:05:38Which might even be worse
01:05:40So now I sat
01:05:41With a dictionary
01:05:42Looking for hints
01:05:44Of what my name
01:05:45Might be
01:05:47This goes on
01:05:51For a half an hour
01:05:52Which in LSD time
01:05:55Is probably 26 years
01:05:56I reached into my pocket
01:05:59Because I realized
01:06:00That I had a wallet
01:06:01And that I could find my name
01:06:04And truly my next thought
01:06:06Was I was afraid
01:06:08To open my wallet
01:06:09Because I thought
01:06:10What if there's nothing
01:06:11In there but Monopoly cards
01:06:12First it terrified me
01:06:22And then I couldn't
01:06:23Stop laughing
01:06:24And then I found
01:06:25My name again
01:06:26And then things
01:06:29Kind of got back on track
01:06:30Guys
01:06:32My name is Louis Black
01:06:34I've seen people bug out
01:06:41So that's the only reason
01:06:42Why I don't recommend it
01:06:43For everybody
01:06:43I'll be lying
01:06:44If I said it's for everybody
01:06:45It's not
01:06:45Give it to me
01:06:46Yeah I'm ready
01:06:47Let's go
01:06:48I was so not ready
01:06:49To take acid
01:06:50It was a huge mistake
01:06:51In retrospect
01:07:04I didn't realize
01:07:05How much was going
01:07:05To change my life
01:07:06Because it really
01:07:07Changed my life
01:07:07For a long time
01:07:08I just thought
01:07:10Alright
01:07:10Here we go
01:07:11This is going to be great
01:07:12I think we had seen
01:07:13Hair recently
01:07:14Which was a big influence
01:07:16Well I was hoping
01:07:27For some sort of
01:07:28Psychedelic revelation
01:07:30Kind of hair like
01:07:32You know
01:07:33With just amazing
01:07:34Sort of imagery
01:07:36And just you know
01:07:38Just sort of
01:07:39Some sort of opening
01:07:41Into some sort of
01:07:42Other form of consciousness
01:07:43And it just
01:07:44It was not that at all
01:07:46It was
01:07:47It was just
01:07:48Fear and anxiety
01:07:50Being
01:07:52Just being amplified
01:07:54Which is not
01:07:56You know
01:07:56Like who needs that
01:07:57Who needs to take a drug
01:07:58To have that happen
01:07:59So I took one
01:08:02Half an hour goes by
01:08:0345 minutes go by
01:08:05An hour goes by
01:08:06We're hanging out
01:08:07And of course
01:08:08Nothing's happening
01:08:08Like another half hour
01:08:10Goes by
01:08:11And now
01:08:11It's like an hour and a half
01:08:12And nothing's happening
01:08:13So of course
01:08:15I said to him
01:08:16We got to take another
01:08:17So we took another
01:08:18And then something happened
01:08:20Immediately I started
01:08:21To freak out
01:08:22And get really scared
01:08:23I started looking at my hand
01:08:24Doing the cliche thing
01:08:25Of like pondering
01:08:26What my hand was
01:08:27Isn't there always
01:08:28That thing of just like
01:08:29Kind of staring at your hand
01:08:30Or like your thumb
01:08:32And like just seeing
01:08:33The whole universe
01:08:34And your thumb
01:08:35That kind of thing
01:08:37What is going on
01:08:38What is going on in your brain
01:08:39When you are tripping
01:08:40Well roughly 10% of your brain
01:08:43Is consumed by sound and color
01:08:45Another 10%
01:08:47By the concept of time
01:08:48Which has been known
01:08:50To speed up
01:08:50And or slow down
01:08:52And the other 80%
01:08:54Staring at your hand
01:08:56Whoa that's cool
01:09:00I'm freaking out
01:09:02I said let's just go to my house
01:09:03And we were walking
01:09:04Towards where they blow up
01:09:05The balloon animals
01:09:06For the Thanksgiving Day Parade
01:09:08And I started to trip out
01:09:10On that idea
01:09:11Evil giant inflated characters
01:09:13Were flipping up
01:09:15And coming out
01:09:16Of 77th Street
01:09:17I was a big Ghostbusters fan
01:09:19So the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man
01:09:21Image of him
01:09:23Coming down to Central Park West
01:09:24Was sort of in my mind
01:09:26And then very quickly
01:09:28Realizing that I had no idea
01:09:30Where I was
01:09:31Who I was
01:09:32Or what this whole
01:09:33The whole context of life was
01:09:35I decided that I needed
01:09:37To talk to my parents
01:09:38To tell them
01:09:39What was happening to me
01:09:40And my parents were out of town
01:09:42Filming a Love Boat episode
01:09:43I called
01:09:50Jerry Stiller
01:09:52And Ann Mira
01:09:53Up on the phone
01:09:54And I said
01:09:56Dad
01:09:56I took some acid
01:09:57And he said
01:09:58What?
01:09:59What?
01:09:59Is acid?
01:10:01I think he might have thought
01:10:01I drank some
01:10:02Battery acid or something
01:10:04It wasn't like
01:10:05My dad was Jerry Garcia
01:10:07It was Jerry Stiller
01:10:08And I said
01:10:09LSD
01:10:10And he's like
01:10:10LSD
01:10:11And I could hear him
01:10:13Processing it
01:10:14I think the immediate thought
01:10:15Was like
01:10:16I think he was thinking
01:10:16He'd failed as a parent
01:10:18I think that was
01:10:18What was probably
01:10:19Going through his mind
01:10:20And then my dad said
01:10:22I understand
01:10:23What you're going through
01:10:24When I was 10 years old
01:10:26I smoked a pell-mell cigarette
01:10:28And I was sick for two days
01:10:30And I said
01:10:31No dad
01:10:32That's not what I'm going through
01:10:33This is a whole
01:10:34Different experience
01:10:35I tried to explain to him
01:10:36What it was
01:10:37And he basically said
01:10:38He just said
01:10:39It's going to be okay
01:10:40Which actually was really
01:10:41Sweet
01:10:42When someone
01:10:44Consumes a drug
01:10:45And they feel
01:10:46They're going crazy
01:10:47The biggest fear is
01:10:48Oh my god
01:10:49I'm never going to
01:10:51Return to being myself again
01:10:53I'm always going to be crazy
01:10:54My brain
01:10:55Is broken
01:10:56And I'm never
01:10:57Ever coming back
01:10:58Maybe this is just
01:10:59My brain now
01:11:00And this is now
01:11:01How the world actually is
01:11:02And that's
01:11:03That can be scary
01:11:04You know
01:11:04This isn't going well
01:11:05I want this to end
01:11:07How do we make this end
01:11:08Oh my god
01:11:09This is never going to end
01:11:11I'm going to go
01:11:12Into a mental institution
01:11:13And then I would see
01:11:15My mother's face
01:11:16In the window
01:11:17Of the padded cell
01:11:18Balling her eyes out
01:11:19You cannot coax a person
01:11:21Out of their bad trip
01:11:22And once it's in their system
01:11:24It takes its own time
01:11:26Most important intervention
01:11:27You can make
01:11:28Is just to reassure them
01:11:29That they're experiencing
01:11:30This altered state
01:11:32As frightening as it is
01:11:33But they're experiencing it
01:11:34Because they ingested a compound
01:11:36The bad news is
01:11:37They're in a scary place
01:11:38But the good news is
01:11:39It's going to be time limited
01:11:40I think the first time
01:11:41I had such an experience
01:11:43I had those kind of naive feelings
01:11:46You know
01:11:46Maybe I won't
01:11:47I won't be normal again
01:11:48You know
01:11:49But I've had enough experiences
01:11:50To realize that that's not true
01:11:52When in doubt
01:11:52Zoom out
01:11:53If you're fearful of something
01:11:56You just need to zoom away from it
01:11:58So you can see the larger context
01:11:59And go
01:11:59Oh okay
01:12:00That's not a big deal
01:12:01Things get scary
01:12:02But that's why it's important
01:12:04To remember
01:12:05You're high
01:12:05It's not reality
01:12:07I'm literally just falling in my mind
01:12:09And I'm like
01:12:09I've got to go to the emergency room
01:12:11I can't handle this anymore
01:12:12There's one of those dudes
01:12:13Sitting in front of me
01:12:14Who's like
01:12:15You used to see him at dead shows
01:12:17They've clearly been on too many trips
01:12:19They sort of move at a different frequency
01:12:21Than other people
01:12:22They're like
01:12:22Hey man
01:12:23You know
01:12:23They've got this weird
01:12:24You know
01:12:24They can
01:12:25Yeah
01:12:25So I just have him on the shoulder
01:12:27And I look at him
01:12:28I go
01:12:28You know
01:12:29Pretty soon
01:12:30Jerry's going to come out
01:12:31And him and his guitar
01:12:33Are going to be like one thing
01:12:35And this guy just looks at me
01:12:36And he goes
01:12:37Just hang on man
01:12:40He turns back around
01:12:42And I was like
01:12:43Okay
01:12:44And that was like
01:12:45The best advice I ever got
01:12:46And I use it to this day
01:12:47Just hang on man
01:12:53Thanks Fred
01:12:54And now for the horrifying conclusion
01:12:58Of Bad Trip
01:13:00Knock knock knock
01:13:01Who is it?
01:13:03It's a deranged drifter
01:13:05Who wants to torture you
01:13:06For the next 12 hours
01:13:07By slowly peeling your skin
01:13:09Off your body
01:13:10Then plucking out
01:13:11Your horror filled eyeballs
01:13:13And feeding them to you
01:13:14On a soft pretzel roll
01:13:16Made of your own epidermis
01:13:18Oh sure
01:13:18Great
01:13:19Come on in
01:13:20Sounds crazy, right?
01:13:22Well
01:13:22That's exactly what you're doing
01:13:24When you open your brain
01:13:25The door
01:13:26To hallucinogenics
01:13:27The deranged drifter
01:13:29Let's check in with Emily
01:13:31And her friends
01:13:32Now that they have
01:13:32Willingly agreed
01:13:33To have their brains
01:13:34Dissected
01:13:35Metaphorically
01:13:36By the deranged psycho
01:13:38Of psychedelics
01:13:39We definitely made the right choice
01:13:46Getting out of that party
01:13:47Well they wouldn't let us back in
01:13:49After we broke all those windows
01:13:50Oh no
01:13:53Oh my god
01:13:55Oh no
01:13:56Oh no
01:14:08Well, you've seen two sides of the LSD psychedelic question, but if you really think of it, there have been about 20 sides to the question. While it's possible that some things were left out, we did hear from the most important and most strongly felt opinions about LSD. Now it's your turn. You decide.
01:14:28You know, what we call everyday reality is a projection of consciousness. In reality, there's no such thing as colors or sounds or textures or tastes or smells in the so-called real world. The real world is a radically ambiguous and ceaselessly flowing quantum soup. It's a fluctuation of energy and information in an infinite void. The sky that an insect sees is not the sky you and I see.
01:14:55A honeybee experiences ultraviolet radiation. I have no idea what that looks like, you know? So when a honeybee looks at a flower, it doesn't see a flower the way you and I see, although it can sense honey from a distance. A snake experiences infrared radiation. A bat experiences the echo of ultrasound. A chameleon's eyeball swiveled on two different axes. You can't even remotely imagine what this would look like to a chameleon.
01:15:23So what's reality? And the answer is, there's no such thing.
01:15:27These compounds are utilized under optimal conditions seem to have a rather remarkable facility for catalyzing spiritual level experiences, which by their very nature may be, may have the potential to be transformative.
01:15:42I've enhanced my ability to navigate the world, to be in a family, to relate to my children, to relate to my wife, to my colleagues.
01:15:54It teaches me about community and it teaches me that, you know, the core of all religious thought ought to be, let me treat others the way I want to be treated myself.
01:16:06Whenever it was a good trip, I would think, oh my God, we're all one. Death is not something to fear. Life and death are really walking hand in hand with each other and it's cool.
01:16:18The first time, or the first couple times I tripped, I really did believe, like, every single person, the planet would be a better planet if everybody took acid once.
01:16:30Did it make me smarter? Did I become enlightened? I don't know.
01:16:34But I think it enabled me early on to imagine another point of view, another perspective.
01:16:43I think it made me a better person, both creatively and in every other way.
01:16:48I'd rather be a person who's had that in his past than somebody who missed it.
01:16:53Even now in my adult life, I continue to experience it as a very psychedelic adventure.
01:16:57That is like a, you know, a baffling, nonsensical riddle. Let's face it, we're all going to die.
01:17:02So, you know.
01:17:04It was kind of like jumping out of an airplane. About a second and a half into it, I realized, oh, I never need to do this again ever in my life.
01:17:11I don't ever want to do this. That was sort of my experience with acid.
01:17:15A few minutes into it, only it lasted for another six hours. That was the problem.
01:17:20I think what I'd say to anyone tripping for the first time is be moderate.
01:17:25It's the haircut theory. You can always cut more off.
01:17:28But once you cut too much, once you've taken too much, there's no turning back.
01:17:33I thought I'll never do that again. But I did. A few more times.
01:17:38You should not take it cavalierly. I don't know if you should take it.
01:17:41In the sky, I see a giant zipper.
01:17:44And the zipper starts to open.
01:17:49Now, if you go with the flow, you let the zipper open.
01:17:54And you just fucking deal.
01:17:55If they're bats, if it's God's penis, whatever.
01:17:58You just do it, okay?
01:18:00If you have any fucking sense when it comes to drugs.
01:18:03Don't stop the zipper.
01:18:05I'm always looking to evolve as a human being.
01:18:10I think we do that by thinking out of the box.
01:18:13We have to accept that the box is just a construct.
01:18:15It's something that we've been conditioned to accept.
01:18:18But it's not particularly useful.
01:18:20Everything is in crisis.
01:18:21How are we going to survive the crisis?
01:18:23How do we get over the other side of the wall?
01:18:25And so we need to use whatever tools it takes to get over the other side.
01:18:30It's like a stepladder to look over a brick wall that's a little bit too tall for you.
01:18:35You use a stepladder, you get to see this crazy landscape.
01:18:38You kind of had an inkling about every time you walked by this wall.
01:18:42And then some people can sit in front of the wall and meditate.
01:18:47And then the wall becomes transparent and they see beyond it.
01:18:50So there are many pathways to arrive at the same realization.
01:18:54It's a tremendous asset.
01:18:56We would learn about it and not have our government stop us from learning things
01:19:00that could really be the same with marijuana.
01:19:02I mean, they'd take away all the possible discovery of all the medicine it could be.
01:19:07What I would envision really would be certified retreat centers,
01:19:12you know, preferably close to nature,
01:19:15where individuals can go and have a treatment
01:19:18and have expert facilitators help guide them through the experience
01:19:23and afterwards help them integrate that experience into their lives.
01:19:27If I may say so, the whole consciousness revolution that started in the 60s,
01:19:33which led to other movements, the feminist movement, the ecology movement,
01:19:37the peace movement, Greenpeace, all of that,
01:19:41began with the use of hallucinogenic drugs.
01:19:47Many people think that it peaked and it went away.
01:19:49I'm sorry to inform you, the awakening is still going on.
01:19:55We're on a trip all the time.
01:19:57Right now we're on a trip, right?
01:19:58Life is a trip.
01:19:59We're on a trip.
01:20:08Bye-bye.
01:20:11Bye-bye.
01:20:20Bye-bye.
01:20:22Bye-bye.
01:20:24Bye-bye.
01:20:28Lots of people drink coffee before they go to work.
01:20:33Of course, others, believe it or not, drop acid.
01:20:36Now, why some psychiatrists and researchers are giving psychedelic drugs a second look
01:20:42as a possible way of treating depression and some mental illnesses.
01:20:46They're being used to treat depression, anxiety, and addiction.
01:20:50The early results are impressive.
01:20:52They're relatively non-toxic, less toxic than alcohol.
01:20:55They're non-addictive.
01:20:56The DEA says it's granted permission to more than 50 researchers to study the therapeutic
01:21:01effects of LSD.
01:21:03Denver has become the first city in America to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms.
01:21:08The city of Oakland is now the second city in the U.S. to decriminalize the adult use
01:21:13and possession of magic mushrooms.
01:21:16The Santa Cruz City Council unanimously approved the resolution.
01:21:19This decriminalizes the use, possession, and cultivation of psychoactive plants.
01:21:25If you could use a drug, and this has been done now, that could stop you smoking cigarettes,
01:21:29or being an alcoholic, you know, working maybe 80% of the time, at least initially...
01:21:34Yeah.
01:21:35We ought to explore how that's possible.
01:21:37Let's you and I do some mushrooms.
01:21:38All right.
01:21:39Let's do it.
01:21:44Good luck.
01:22:11Whether you want from me.
01:22:13Whether you want, I'll do.
01:22:17Try to squeeze a drop of blood from a sugar view.
01:22:24I'm trying to be more assured
01:22:38I'm trying to be more right there
01:22:41I'm trying to be less uptight
01:22:44I'm trying to be more aware
01:22:47Whatever you want from me
01:22:50It's what I want to do for you
01:22:54Just give it a drop of blood
01:22:57I'm a sugar few
01:23:20You know I like to act a part of each other
01:23:24You know I like to act a part of each other
01:23:36I crumble like a sugar few
01:23:39You know I like to act a part of each other
01:23:48I crumble like a sugar few
01:23:54For you
01:23:57Whatever you want from me
01:24:20Whatever you want I'll do
01:24:23And I will try
01:24:25Whatever you want from me
01:24:32Whatever you want I'll do
01:24:35So try to squeeze a drop of blood
01:24:39Squeeze a drop of blood from a sugar few
01:24:42Good night
01:25:12I'll try to squeeze a drop of blood
