The Commerson’s dolphin, often nicknamed the "panda dolphin" due to its striking black and white coloration, is one of the most visually unique dolphins in the world. These small, fast-swimming dolphins are found in two main regions: near the southern tip of South America, especially around the Falkland Islands and Tierra del Fuego, and around the Kerguelen Islands in the Indian Ocean.
They have a compact body, a short beak, and a rounded head, with a distinctive pattern — their head, dorsal fin, and tail are black, while the rest of the body is bright white. This high contrast gives them their panda-like appearance.
Commerson’s dolphins are highly energetic and playful. They are often seen swimming swiftly near boats, leaping from the water, and riding waves. Their behavior and bold patterns make them a favorite among wildlife watchers.
Despite their cheerful look, like many marine species, they face threats from habitat degradation, fishing nets, and pollution. Conservation efforts aim to keep these beautiful creatures safe in their natural environments.
