🔥 On First Take, Stephen A. Smith dissects two major offseason moves:

Could the Los Angeles Lakers land Damian Lillard despite his Achilles injury and waiver by the Bucks? Lillard remains a popular option in L.A., Golden State, and Boston thanks to his veteran presence and affordable contract situation ([turn0news26], [turn0news27]).

Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors are reportedly eyeing a veteran big in Al Horford, aiming to add a seasoned floor-spacing center to complement Stephen Curry and bolster their title chances ([turn0news28], [turn0search15]).

Join Stephen A. as he explores how Lillard’s recovery timeline and veteran fit could impact the Lakers, and how Horford’s signing could pivot the Warriors into another contender.

00:00Il s'agit de la media en L.A. earlier this week.
00:02Le premier No. 1 overall pick
00:04hopes to fill a major need for the purple and gold
00:06at that center position,
00:07which has him eager to team up with Luka and LeBron.
00:13They both averaged about 9 assists
00:15over their career span.
00:17And, you know, just the type of players
00:19they created with their teammates, you know.
00:22They turn them into superstars
00:24and, you know, they make them bigger than their roles
00:27and make them very important on the floor as well.
00:29And, you know, just seeing that
00:31and, you know, finally getting the chance
00:32to go in and experience that would be big for me.
00:36And, you know, just getting me back to my full form
00:37how I used to play.
00:39And, you know, just coming up
00:40and just being a part of the finals
00:42is those playmakers I'm used to being around,
00:45having around me that's leading to win.
00:48Okay, so we know the center position
00:49was obviously a huge need.
00:51The Lakers tried to fulfill it at the trade deadline.
00:53That fell through.
00:54They do it with DeAndre Aiden.
00:55They also re-sign Jackson Hayes.
00:57David, when you take a look
01:00at the expectations in Los Angeles
01:02based on what they did in free agency,
01:03what is a fair and realistic place
01:07for them to be in 2025?
01:11Honestly, the fair place is for them
01:13to be kind of where they were last year.
01:15I don't see this team leapfrogging
01:17back to where they were in terms of the standings,
01:19being in the top four,
01:20having home court advantage in the first round.
01:22But I do see them having a similar first round exit
01:26this year than they had last year.
01:28There are just so many teams in the West,
01:29I think, are just quite frankly better than them.
01:31OKC, Houston, Denver, Minnesota,
01:34that's four already.
01:35I think the Clippers are better than them.
01:37I think they still have holes defensively.
01:39I think they still could use another big behind Aiden.
01:42I'm not sure if Hayes is necessarily that guy.
01:45The only thing to me that would change the ceiling
01:48in how we look at this team
01:49is if Luka Doncic comes out
01:51and is top three player in the league,
01:53top five player, MVP like Luka Doncic,
01:55all world type player,
01:57and we see the same guy
01:58that carried the Dallas Mavericks to the finals.
02:00If we get that guy,
02:02that raises the level of the ceiling
02:04for this Lakers team.
02:05But from what we have seen so far
02:07and just adding DeAndre Aiden,
02:09I see a very similar exit to them
02:11that I saw last season.
02:12Wendy, you've got the same four or five teams
02:15that are ahead of the Lakers
02:16in the West right now.
02:19Yeah, so for the first time in 23 years,
02:23a team that has LeBron James on it,
02:26the main focus of the team is not LeBron.
02:29When he was a rookie,
02:30he was the main focus.
02:3210th year, 17th year, 22nd year,
02:34he was the focus.
02:36That's not the case.
02:37And so for the Lakers to rise above
02:40where they were last year,
02:41you're not expecting it to come from LeBron.
02:44LeBron was a second team all-NBA player
02:47as a 40-year-old.
02:49That's not going to increase.
02:52What you're looking for is Luka.
02:54The team is building around Luka.
02:56Its major off-season focus is not Aiden.
02:59It's not LeBron.
03:00It's not Jake LaRavia.
03:01It's getting Luka into a contract.
03:03And the focus for the 25-26 season is Luka.
03:08If he can be great,
03:09that's how they elevate.
03:10Now, we're going to get a sneak peek of this
03:14because coming up in August,
03:17Luka is playing for the Slovenian national team
03:19in the European Championships.
03:21This is regarded as the most intense
03:23basketball tournament in the world.
03:26He won it six or so years ago.
03:29It's the greatest accomplishment of his basketball career
03:31is leading little Slovenia
03:33to the Eurobasket Championship.
03:35We're going to get an idea
03:36of where Luka is physically
03:38and where he is mentally.
03:39We're going to be able to watch him
03:40in August and September.
03:42And we're going to have a better idea then
03:43of what the Lakers are going to be.
03:45I know what LeBron James is going to be.
03:47He's going to report in shape,
03:49ready to play, ready to produce.
03:51He's probably going to average 25-7-7
03:54because that's who he is.
03:56But that is not enough to elevate the Lakers
03:58for more than what they were.
04:00Luka winning an MVP,
04:01which is something that we have really thought
04:03was going to happen for the last couple of years,
04:04but hasn't,
04:06that takes the Lakers to the next level.
04:08And we know J.J. Redick
04:09will be watching that closely.
04:11The comments about everybody showing up in shape
04:13felt kind of pointed towards one player in particular.
04:17I want to stay in the state of California here.
04:19The Warriors haven't done anything.
04:21Only team right now in the NBA
04:22to not make a singular move in free agency.
04:25We're in this weird holding pattern.
04:26Are they going to trade Jonathan Kaminga?
04:29Will it be a sign-and-trade?
04:30Whatever it is.
04:31Wendy, what do you make
04:32of the Warriors' lack of moves so far?
04:35I make nothing of it.
04:38First of all,
04:39the Warriors made one of the biggest trades
04:41of last season
04:42when they acquired Jimmy Butler
04:44for really a quality
04:45in terms of assets out bringing him in.
04:48I know it was overshadowed that week
04:50by Luka getting traded,
04:52but Jimmy Butler,
04:53when that team was healthy
04:54before Steph got hurt,
04:55was very potent
04:56down the stretch of the season.
04:58So let's not forget
04:59that they have Jimmy Butler.
05:00Secondly,
05:01I expect them
05:02to make a couple of signings
05:03in the near future.
05:04I think they are very strongly
05:06in position to potentially
05:06sign Al Horford.
05:08They're also potentially
05:09a strong candidate
05:10to sign D'Anthony Melton,
05:12who would be adding depth
05:13to their wing.
05:14And they have the number one
05:16free agent
05:18really left on the market
05:19in unrestricted free agent
05:20Jonathan Kaminga.
05:21They're going to do something with him.
05:23They're either going to re-sign him
05:24or they're going to sign
05:26and trade him for something.
05:27So the Warriors are going to be
05:29doing things
05:30between now
05:31and when the season starts.
05:32Kaminga's situation
05:33may not resolve itself
05:34for a while,
05:35but they're going to benefit
05:36from that,
05:36either getting assets back
05:38for him or keeping him.
05:40Do not stress about the Warriors.
05:41They are a very strong team.
05:43They're in excellent position.
05:44They are certainly not the favorites
05:45to win anything,
05:46but they are going to be
05:47a potent team.
05:48Complaining that they haven't
05:49actually done anything yet
05:51is frankly shallow thinking.
05:52All right,
05:53we'll leave it here.
05:54Wendy says,
05:55do not stress.
05:55If you are a Warriors fan,
05:56just sit tight.
05:57I'll be doing something
05:58in the not-too-distant future.
06:00We'll be doing more NBA
06:01in the not-too-distant future,
06:02but coming up next,
06:03Big 12 Media Days
06:04are underway
06:04and Deion Sanders
06:05used to play his whole
06:06career with one team.
06:10David,
06:10what's your reaction to that?
06:11Yeah, let's start
06:12with the positive here.
06:13Yeah, let's start
06:14with the positive here
06:15with Devin Booker.
06:16Devin Booker
06:17absolutely deserves
06:18this kind of money.
06:18He's one of the best
06:19shooting guards in the league.
06:20He was the best player
06:21on a team that went
06:22to an NBA Finals
06:23a few years ago.
06:24This makes all the sense
06:26in the world
06:26for him from a financial
06:27standpoint.
06:29$145 million,
06:30a lot of money.
06:31Now, let's talk about
06:33the problem here.
06:34The Phoenix Suns
06:35are doomed to purgatory
06:37in one of the more
06:37rudderless franchises
06:39that we have
06:39in all of the NBA,
06:41and I don't think
06:41there's a franchise
06:42I would want to be less
06:43for the next few years
06:44than this Phoenix Suns team.
06:46A few years ago,
06:47they had what was
06:48the blueprint
06:49for the type of team
06:50that gets to championships
06:52and gets deep
06:52into playoff runs.
06:53They had a player
06:54in Devin Booker.
06:55They had a young
06:56core around them.
06:57They had a team
06:58that everybody
06:59is trying to emulate
07:00right now.
07:01They blew that up
07:02to bring in
07:03older players,
07:04to bring in
07:04the Kevin Durant
07:05to the world,
07:05to bring in
07:06Beal and those
07:07type of guys,
07:08and now they have
07:09a franchise
07:09where they do not
07:11really have picks
07:12for a long time,
07:14for many years,
07:15control of their own picks,
07:16and they have,
07:17you know,
07:18middling players
07:19around Devin Booker.
07:20Let's be honest,
07:21no disrespect to those players.
07:22Their hope is that
07:23one of these draft picks
07:24they have this year
07:25can turn into somebody,
07:27but Devin Booker
07:27is really looking
07:28at a situation
07:29that is pretty closely
07:30to one of his teammates,
07:32which is Bradley Beal
07:33when he was in
07:33the Washington Wizards
07:34where you are
07:34a shining star
07:36around a franchise
07:37that really has
07:38no way to put
07:39any big talent
07:40around you
07:41or make any sort
07:42of run
07:42deep into the playoffs,
07:44and you cannot
07:45Beal through the draft.
07:46This is something
07:47that I would not
07:48want to be in
07:49all things considered
07:50taking away the money,
07:51but when the money
07:51is concerned,
07:53yes,
07:53you have to take it,
07:54but he has to understand
07:55that he is going
07:55to be part of a franchise
07:56that's going nowhere
07:57for most of the time
07:58he's on that contract.
07:59That's a hard pill
08:01to swallow
08:01if you think of the fact
08:02that he's 28 years old
08:04right now.
08:04I'm not even thinking
08:05about five years
08:06down the line
08:06when he's 34,
08:08and Wendy,
08:08obviously,
08:08he had three years
08:09remaining on his
08:10current contract
08:11before they did
08:11this extension,
08:12but he's the face
08:13of Phoenix Sports,
08:14guys.
08:15Like,
08:15this is something
08:16that was in the works
08:17for a while,
08:18and they had to do it,
08:19but I'm thinking
08:20of what David just said,
08:22Wendy,
08:22the most directionless
08:23franchise in the West,
08:25in the NBA.
08:26How do you react to that?
08:29Well,
08:29it's possible,
08:30Courtney,
08:30that the Suns
08:31are about to make
08:32another five-year deal.
08:33They have had discussions
08:34with Bradley Beal
08:35about buying him
08:37out of his contract,
08:38and,
08:39I mean,
08:40we just saw this
08:41with Dame Lillard
08:42in Milwaukee.
08:43If this happens,
08:45and it's still an if,
08:46and they wave
08:47and stretch him,
08:48which is something
08:49I think they're
08:49seriously considering,
08:50Bradley Beal
08:52would be on the books
08:52for five more years.
08:53That means
08:54that while Devin Booker
08:56is making $70 million
08:57in 2028-29
08:59and 29-30,
09:01Bradley Beal
09:02would be making
09:03$22 or so million
09:05in that same year.
09:07And the idea
09:08of having Bradley Beal
09:09having to be
09:10an anchor
09:11on your cap
09:12for that long
09:13is hard to swallow.
09:14And the reason
09:15that they're going
09:16to do it,
09:17or the reason
09:17they're seriously
09:18thinking about doing it,
09:19is because it's
09:20going to potentially
09:21save them
09:21over $150 million
09:23this year
09:25in luxury tax,
09:27this year alone.
09:28It is not a move
09:29that like Milwaukee did.
