00:00Hello, everyone. Welcome back to another episode of the Thought Emporium, and today's topic is one

00:07that I've been wanting to discuss for some time now, but I can't quite put my finger on why.

00:13Something about it just nags at me. Let's see if you can figure out what it is.

00:18Technology? The question is, what are the effects of technology on society?

00:24No, I don't mean technology in the sense of all the various digital gadgets we have nowadays,

00:31although that is a huge part of it. No, I mean technology in its broadest sense.

00:37Any invention or innovation that changes how we live our lives, from the wheel and fire to

00:43antibiotics and nuclear power. Technology has long been considered a driving force of evolution.

00:49As a species, we tend to advance in tandem with our tools. This makes sense. After all,

00:56technology is a reflection of ourselves, our curiosity, our ingenuity, our desires and fears.

01:04It is no wonder, then, that so much of our progress as a species has been driven by technology.

01:10But what are the downsides? What are the effects of technology on society?

01:15This is where things get interesting because, while technology has brought about many positive

01:20changes in our lives, there's also a darker side to it. A lot darker. You know, I grew up in a time

01:27when the internet was just starting to become mainstream. And I remember those days well. The

01:33dial-up, the clunky websites, the chat rooms. The internet was a novel experience back then.

01:40Something exciting and full of potential. But I think none of us truly understood the kind of

01:46impact it would have on society. We're still not sure exactly how much of an impact it has had.

01:52The internet has changed the way we communicate, the way we do business, the way we learn.

01:59It's connected people like never before. But it's also created a generation of narcissists,

02:05isolated people, who communicate constantly but never really connect with anyone on a deep level

02:11lost in a world of their own, making living vicariously through social media, chasing likes

02:17and validation from people they don't even know. And it's not just social media. The internet has

02:23made it easier than ever to consume pornography to the point where it's practically normalized.

02:29This has led to a decrease in mental health around the world, especially among young men.

02:36Then there's artificial intelligence. IA is one of the most exciting developments in recent years,

02:43but it's also one of the most controversial. Many experts believe that it will usually replace

02:50humans altogether, and that's scary. There's already plenty of evidence that assuming tasks that once

02:56required human tasks that once required human intelligence, such as playing chess or diagnosing

03:02diseases. It's only a matter of time before it takes over jobs that require more creativity and

03:09intuition. This could lead to mass unemployment and social unrest. And what about genetic engineering?

03:17We've already seen the amazing things that can be done with this technology.

03:20Curing diseases, extending lifespan, enhancing intelligence. The possibilities are really

03:26endless. But there are also risks involved. What happens if someone decides to use genetic

03:33engineering to create a new race of superhumans? What happens if someone decides to weaponize

03:40viruses or bacteria? You see, technology is a tool. It's like a knife. It can be used for good

03:47or evil. That is why it is so important that we understand the potential consequences of new

03:54technologies before we release them into the world. Unfortunately, this is not always easy.

04:02Sometimes the risks are obvious, like with nuclear weapons. But other times the risks are less clear.

04:09Take vaccines, for example. Vaccines have saved countless lives and eradicated deadly diseases,

04:16but they've also been linked to a number of adverse effects. Then there's fossil fuels.

04:23Fossil fuels have powered the industrial revolution and allowed us to build the modern world,

04:28but they've also caused climate change. So what's the answer here? Should we reject all new technologies?

04:36Of course not. Doing so would be insane. Instead, we need to proceed with caution,

04:42making sure that we weigh the risks and benefits of each new technology before we move forward.

04:49We also need to make sure that we have the proper safeguards in place to protect against the potential

04:54dangers. For example, we need to develop strict protocols for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

05:01We also need to work on developing renewable sources of energy so that we are not dependent on fossil fuels.

05:09But it's not just the government's responsibility to make sure that technology is developed and used safely.

05:18We as individuals also have a role to play. We need to educate ourselves about the potential dangers

05:24of new technologies and make our voices heard. If we're not careful, technology could destroy us.

05:31But if we proceed with caution and wisdom, technology could help us create a better future for all of humanity.

05:39Now, let's go back to what I said at the beginning of this video.

05:42Something about this topic nags at me. Can you put your finger on it? Well, here it is.

05:49The reason this topic nags at me is because it's all too easy to demonize technology.

05:54It's a convenient scapegoat for everything that's wrong with our society today. The internet is making us

06:01stupid and narcissistic. Social media is destroying our mental health. I as going to take our jobs.

06:10Genetic engineering is creating a divide between the haves and have-nots. But is this really true?

06:17Yes, technology has played a role in all these problems, but it's not the only factor.

06:23We as humans also bear some responsibility. For example, the reason the internet is full of fake

06:29news and echo chambers is not because of the internet itself, but because of the people who

06:35designed it that way. Social media is not inherently bad. It's how we use it that's causing the problems.

06:43I will undoubtedly automate many jobs, but this has always been the case with new technologies.

06:49It happened with the industrial revolution and it happened with the computer.

06:55Genetic engineering is not creating a divide between the rich and poor. It's the way we choose

07:01to use this technology that could lead to such a divide. This does not mean that technology is without

07:08fault. Far from it. There are many problems that are a direct result of technological development.

07:14But we cannot ignore the fact that we are also responsible for many of these problems.

07:20It's not enough to simply blame technology or to blindly embrace it. We need to understand the

07:27potential consequences of new technologies and make our voices heard. If we do this, we can harness the

07:34power of technology to improve our lives. If we don't, we could end up destroying ourselves.

07:40I think that's the real lesson we need to learn here. Technology is not the problem. It's our attitude

07:47towards it. We have the power to shape the future of technology. Will we use that power wisely? Only
