12:41of 1862.
12:43It's one of the most important social policies in the history of the country.
12:47It gave Americans access to their own little piece, the American dream.
12:50And today, there are as many as 93 million Americans who are descendants of homesteaders.
12:55This is where the homesteading journey started for millions of Americans and immigrants whose
12:59footsteps you're following in.
13:01Now, the Homestead Act was signed by Abraham Lincoln to develop the American West, and it gave
13:05Americans free land, but it wasn't really free.
13:09Homesteaders had to earn the right to keep their land by building homes and farming the
13:13land and making lives for themselves, and you'll have exactly the same goals.
13:19How do you verify that we fulfilled the obligations to keep the land?
13:24They had to have witnesses like your neighbors.
