kmfm's Tons Of Tins back for the third year.

Aimed at feeding families in the summer holidays  the campaign hopes to help tackle food poverty all over kent. From the 7th July to the third of August kmfm hope  to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible.  Etholle Reynolds reports

00:00Between April 2023 and March 2024, over 3 million emergency food parcels were distributed

00:07by Trussell Trust Foodbanks. But back for a third year, a local campaign hopes to tackle the issue

00:14of food poverty across the county. To help tackle the food poverty crisis, the team here at KMFM

00:20are bringing back their Tons of Tins campaign. The campaign sets out to help a variety of food banks

00:26and services that offer food banks here across Kent. They're accepting a wide variety of tinned items

00:31and non-perishables. Tons of Tins calls on anyone to help and donate, and over the past couple of

00:38years has seen an incredibly positive response. We are blown away every year by the incredible

00:45generosity of our listeners. The first year that we ran it, we really didn't know what to expect

00:51because we we had nothing to kind of benchmark it against. And the I remember our kind of initial

00:58goal was just completely blown out of the water. Last year, the campaign donated 9.21 tons of food,

01:06and this year that goal has increased to 10 tons. Unfortunately, a variety of people have had to turn

01:12to food banks over the last couple of years. Some areas of the county have seen food bank demand

01:18increased by over 250%. There's a misguided representation as to who uses food banks.

01:27I think people would be quite surprised. So that's why it's so important. There'll be people

01:32in your family, there'll be people that you're in your friendship groups, there'll be people that you

01:35work with who are having to dip into food banks here in Kent. So if we can help even just alleviate

01:41a little bit of that pain, then yeah, we'll be super happy. The campaign starts today and runs until

01:47Friday the 1st of August. There are many ways people can get involved. One being a donation to a Just

01:55Giving page where KMFM will purchase tins of food, supplies and more. Alternatively, people can go and

02:03deliver tins and food in person. And finally, people are able to do an online shop via their chosen supplier,

02:11and have it delivered to the KMFM HQ. So between now and the 1st of August, KMFM are calling on anyone

02:18to help donate. Or, if not able to donate, to share the campaign across social media.
