00:00Formula One venue over the course of history to race at a former Olympic venue
00:04following on from Barcelona, of course, and Montreal.
00:07It's the Sochi Autodroma.
00:09There are six of the Winter Olympic venues at the track wind its way around.
00:13A 3.6 mile circuit.
00:16It's the third longest on the calendar.
00:17Crucially, it's the second highest in terms of fuel consumption
00:21and the second most demanding of the season.
00:24After the 11th time this season, it is an Mercedes front row lockout.
00:28But as it was in Japan, Nico Rosberg on pole ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
00:31As it was in Japan, too.
00:33Valtteri Bottas starts third.
00:34Sebastian Vettel starts fourth.
00:36His 100th top four start in Formula One.
00:39His teammate, Kimi Räikkönen, behind him alongside Nico Hülkenberg on the grid.
00:42And two fourths Indians in the top ten for the first time in the British Grand Prix in 2014.
00:47Perez ahead of Grosjean, 7th and 8th.
00:49Verstappen, indeed.
00:50Toro Rosso ahead of Daniel Ricciardo.
00:52As it was here in Russia last year, Toro Rosso out-quatifying both red balls.
00:56There's Danny Fiat, the Russian favorite.
00:58And 11th with Felipe Massa alongside him.
01:00Jepsen Park, the leading McLaren driver, has Patrick Maldonado for company.
01:04In 13th and 14th, Felipe Massa.
01:07Traffic problems and then temperature problems with his tyres.
01:10Then his qualifying ended and only 15th fastest alongside Marcus Ericsson.
01:14Will Steven starts ahead of his teammate, Roberto Meri,
01:17who has a 20-place grid penalty because of a new engine.
01:19Fernando Alonso gets 35 places because of more elements used in his engine.
01:24And there, Carlos Sainz will start from the back after missing qualifying
01:28and being allowed to race by the stewards.
01:32Hamilton will fancy that.
01:34Second World Championship Russian Grand Prix here on the shores of the Black Sea.
01:40The drivers look to the light.
01:45It's lights out.
01:46And away we go.
01:47Rosso ahead of Hamilton.
01:49Good start from Sviat and Ricciardo.
01:51Overstabler's got caught and off of Ed Rosberg into the lead.
01:53Ahead of Hamilton.
01:54Vossas in third.
01:56Sebastian Vettel making the challenge.
01:57It's a kilometer run.
01:58Down to the first breaking zone.
02:00Lewis Hamilton on the inside.
02:02And now Sondanico Rosberg.
02:03Rosberg goes in ahead.
02:05And he's got ahead of his teammate.
02:06And there's absolute chaos in the back.
02:08Yes, we saw Alstabler's in fourth India.
02:10Caught up and we have big problems.
02:12Down at turn two.
02:13Round turn three we go.
02:15And Rosberg maintains his lead.
02:17But they're looking to see the Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen.
02:20Getting ahead of Vossas and his teammate Sebastian Vettel.
02:23And it's all going to slow down because we have a safety car for the first time here in Sotty.
02:28And Räikkönen had to get right out of the throttle there because he hadn't clogged.
02:32And Rosberg slowed down to the safety car sign.
02:35Nearly smashed into the back of them.
02:37So Hülkenberg didn't get at all far into a race that promised so much.
02:42Still wasn't on the outside but looked back locking up with brakes from Fiat and Ricciardo.
02:47Then Hülkenberg spun on the curve.
02:50Verstappen had to take evasive action.
02:52And Eriksson ran into the fourth India.
02:55So it's Hülkenberg spinning on the artificial grass on the outside having his own problem.
03:01That then became the same problem for Verstappen and Eriksson.
03:05There he goes.
03:05Well, just no control as the Force India spun round and Pontesina respect behind him.
03:15Are you okay to continue?
03:20Yeah, it's a power.
03:22I couldn't do anything about it.
03:24The car just came spinning to me.
03:26Yeah, Verstappen.
03:27Right.
03:28Are you okay to continue?
03:30Yeah, it's a power.
03:31I couldn't do anything about it.
03:33The car just came spinning to me.
03:35What is the damage on the car, Matt?
03:37Left rear.
03:38Now it's happened.
03:39Look, Rossbo's ahead here.
03:41Problems with his throttle.
03:42Goes into that right-hander.
03:44And then gets a really bad exit, Martin.
03:46And Lewis Hamilton scoot through.
03:49Out of turn two.
03:50And says, thank you very much indeed.
03:51Now, I think it's pushing him on under braking.
03:54He's gone wide into struggles to keep it on the track.
03:58I don't think there's a yield as much, Crossley, as a problem for him.
04:01And I'm sure Mercedes are thinking,
04:03that Williams is far too close to come from.
04:06Well, let's hear Rossbo's radio.
04:10So, Nick, I just need to adapt to the situation.
04:12We'll try and let you know if there's anything else that we can think of.
04:15Rossbo this year is a mechanical problem to fit.
04:18He's been on the receiving end, and that is Romain Grosjean.
04:21And that is a very big crash indeed into the barriers towards the exit of turn three.
04:29And that is a very, very nasty crash indeed for the Frenchman.
04:34Concerned faces, obviously, as they watch on from the Lotus garage.
04:39It's moving.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Safety car, obviously, come rear and gentle buttons for Paris.
04:45Grosjean, you can see, just above that rear wing.
04:49That's through the first part of turn three.
04:50And then he loses the rear, initially, Martin.
04:53Yeah.
04:53And then he gets into the slipstream.
04:57There's a bad enough impact, but it wasn't a shocker.
04:59He's slowed down over a few meters there.
05:03But he gets into the turbulent air behind the McLaren.
05:06And he gets an overstay moment, corrects it.
05:10And it's a bit like being on an oval, isn't it, through there?
05:13That they have in America.
05:14Then, of course, he's on to the marble, the discarded rubber.
05:17Then he's on to the really dusty track that has no grip at all.
05:21And the deceleration, though, to sort of pluck the car in, as those can quite often do,
05:26the head was like a punch ball inside the car, wasn't it?
05:31The hand device and the headrest doing their job there to control around the outside of turn three,
05:37because one of the contributing factors could have been that he got onto the marble.
05:41Yeah, once he's on there, Martin, I suppose it's like driving on ice, really, isn't it?
05:45You've got no hope of getting control back.
05:47Well, they're called marbles for a reason, crossing.
05:50It's not exactly what it feels like when you're on top of them.
05:54And whether they'll feel the need to replace them in these barriers.
06:02OK, for now, so the situation is we've fitted a set of options.
