00:00
That's the most jacked guy I've ever seen in my life.
00:02
I was like, is this dude a Navy SEAL?
00:04
I was definitely nervous.
00:06
Hasn't been a Guy Gardner yet.
00:07
David and I got to spend some time together before we began filming,
00:10
and we were meeting at some bagel place,
00:13
and I never met him in person.
00:15
I knew what he looked like from his other job,
00:18
so I had an idea of what, and I'm waiting for him,
00:21
and this guy starts walking down the street towards me,
00:23
and I noticed this dude, and I think, like,
00:25
that's the most jacked guy I've ever seen in my life.
00:27
I was like, is this dude a Navy SEAL?
00:29
Like, I couldn't stop looking at this dude.
00:30
I was like, he's huge, and as he got closer, like, just from here,
00:34
he was like, hey, Skylar.
00:36
I was like, oh, my God, it's David, man.
00:38
This guy, he's 700 pounds.
00:40
And he had just been, he had taken it upon himself to,
00:43
he had started working out, I think, so.
00:45
He also ate, like, seven bagels during that breakfast.
00:48
He was trying to bulk up.
00:49
We were both bulking, but I just didn't make it as far as he did.
00:54
I went with a different route, but we got to spend it,
00:58
and it, we, I think we hung out for,
00:59
ended up being there for, like, three hours,
01:01
and David is just, like,
01:03
immediately within minutes of meeting him,
01:05
I was like, this is Superman.
01:06
It's just one of those earnest, sincere people.
01:09
He cares so deeply about other people.
01:11
There's such a kindness to him.
01:13
And, yeah, thankfully, we hit it off
01:15
and became genuine friends kind of right off the bat.
01:17
Well, I think it's, it's really integral to James
01:22
that, first and foremost, that, like,
01:25
the emotional life is present in, in every scene.
01:29
I mean, that's what makes his movie so inspiring
01:32
and so moving is that, that, that,
01:34
that heart and that emotion is, is there.
01:38
But, yeah, I mean, it's, it's a kind of heartbreaking scene.
01:42
And, yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna lie.
01:45
It was difficult to act.
01:46
Like, it was difficult to move my face and emote
01:48
with, with, like, three faces on top of my face.
01:51
But at the same time, yeah,
01:54
it was just a stellar, stellar, you know, experience.
01:58
I guess I was, I was definitely nervous
02:00
because he is somebody whose work
02:04
I've admired for a really long time.
02:07
Love his look, too.
02:09
The white hair is so iconic.
02:10
And I guess I had always heard things about him
02:15
and never really had that experience.
02:17
But, yeah, I mean, that, that,
02:20
we met on Zoom before I actually met him in person.
02:23
And he was very nice.
02:24
I was really, I was really surprised at how nice he was.
02:27
Um, and then when we met in person,
02:32
he was very professional in it,
02:33
but, but I really didn't get to know the guy until later.
02:35
Uh, but he did tell me that day
02:38
that we did the camera test
02:39
that I got the role of, of Hawkgirl.
02:40
Uh, and, and, and, and it was very gentle
02:43
because I was, I was clearly very emotional about it.
02:46
It hasn't been a Guy Gardner yet.
02:48
So I get to decide,
02:50
I, I get to set the tone.
02:52
I get to say, this is, this is who he is.
02:54
I don't have to have,
02:56
I don't have anybody comparing my
02:58
version of the character to anyone else's.
03:01
There's, there's, there's never been anybody
03:03
throwing out a first impression before I got to.
03:06
So, uh, I, I, this is the, this is canon now.
03:12
It's iconic.
03:14
That's right.
03:14
I mean, there, there were so many components to it
03:17
and it was a long, long process.
03:19
I really, I, I think it really kind of, uh,
03:23
landed for me when, when I would walk on set
03:27
and just see people's expressions change
03:30
from, you know, like looking at me
03:33
when I first show up in the day with a coffee
03:35
to then seeing them see Metamorpho
03:38
and just the kind of like look
03:40
that would come over their faces.
03:42
And yeah, that was, that was, that was pretty awesome.
03:44
Uh, that's one of the greatest things
03:46
about this character
03:47
and the potential for this experience,
03:49
uh, is the kid who's been told
03:52
that he's too smart for his own good
03:53
or too nerdy or quiet or awkward.
03:55
A kid who wears a whimsical jacket,
03:59
a jacket that may be considered uncool,
04:01
but what makes him cool is his mind,
04:03
is his brain.
04:05
And that is something to be celebrated
04:07
that you, you can make a difference
04:08
through your intelligence.
04:10
And I'm excited to see, you know,
04:11
what kids are inspired by a character like this
04:13
and get into math and science and STEM.
04:16
They, they, they want that sense of hope
04:19
as you were saying, they, they need that sense of hope,
04:21
that sense of, sense of, uh, optimism,
04:24
you know, and, and very troubling times.
04:27
I mean, we are in the midst of very troubling times.
04:30
You know, we have to believe our lying eyes,
04:33
uh, and not, um, and not look away
04:36
and not be in a sense of denial.
04:38
Uh, but people want to feel empowered.
04:40
They want to feel as though
04:41
that they can make a contribution in some way,
04:43
uh, and change the dynamic, you know,
04:46
change, uh, this dysfunctional paradigm.
04:48
And so, um, we, we turn off the lights
04:52
and go into a small theater
04:53
because we want to see collectively,
04:56
decide what our values are
04:59
and who we are, where we've been,
05:00
where we failed, where we can triumph.
05:03
Um, but ultimately decide what our values are
05:06
and walk out of the theater
05:07
and act on those.
05:09
All right?
05:10
And we can look at the screen and say,
05:12
there but by the grace of God go I.
05:14
I have some power within me
05:16
to actually change the world.
05:18
And it may be a metaphor
05:19
in the story of these superhero, uh, films.
05:23
Uh, but you realize that's me.
05:26
I have, I have the power to make an impact.
05:29
And I think that's what it is.
05:31
While it's entertaining, um,
05:34
and, and, and, uh, the optimism and joy is there,
05:38
it really gives people a sense of, um,
05:42
and, and the knowledge
05:44
that they have it within themselves
05:46
a power to make a change.
05:48
It's perfect timing, I think.
05:50
This film is, um, speaking on history.
05:54
I mean, you could apply this
05:55
to many historical events,
05:57
but I think, um, it's really amazing.
05:59
It's really amazing that this movie's coming out.
06:01
And, um, it has a great message behind it.
06:05
I was really relieved when I watched it.
06:08
I was having a terrible week,
06:09
um, consuming way too much real media.
06:12
And, um, watching this made me feel really light
06:15
and happy and, and at least hopeful, you know?
06:20
Yeah.
06:20
I think there's a potential for, uh, audiences
06:23
to watch this film and,
06:24
and have a renewed sense of empowerment.
06:28
Because I think this movie probably haven't seen it,
06:30
but I, the visuals are spectacular.
06:32
The action is spectacular.
06:33
Yes.
06:34
But I think, really, it's a meditation on the human spirit
06:36
that, you know, whatever problem that you're going through,
06:40
uh, you can attack.
06:41
And you can, uh, if it's a big societal issue
06:44
or an interpersonal issue,
06:46
you have the power to deal with the problems
06:50
that you can deal with.
06:51
Because true heroism is, is resilience and, and empathy,
06:56
uh, and the willingness to, like, accept
06:59
the full capacity of the human condition.
07:02
It's, it's just nice to see the, the, the Daily Planet,
07:07
the journalists, like, helping a superhero defeat the villain.
07:13
You know, like, often they play a part in the story.
07:15
They're revealing things that, like, maybe make the superhero
07:17
look bad or make the superhero look good.
07:20
You know, it complicates things.
07:22
But I, I, I haven't seen it as much
07:24
where they are part of the effort
07:25
to actually bring that person down.
07:27
And they're in this, you know, spacecraft
07:29
and they are part of the story in tandem.
07:33
And they're doing, like, a very realistic thing.
07:34
They are exposing some truth
07:37
so that people can get the truth
07:39
and turn on the person who is actually doing them harm.
07:43
So it's really cool to see that.
07:44
I think that could be exciting for younger people
07:46
who might want to be journalists to be like,
07:48
wow, they do have this power.
07:50
They are superheroes.
07:51
They're working with them in that way.
07:52
So I think it's, it's really cool and important.
07:54
The stakes feel just as high in the newsroom
07:57
as they do in the action sequences.
07:59
Reading the script, you have a sense
08:01
that the work that we're doing
08:02
is just as important as the action itself,
08:05
that the, the representation of the action is.
08:09
There's, there's a sequence,
08:10
like, at the end of the movie
08:11
where it, kind of a newsroom kind of sequence
08:13
and we're sort of breaking the story down
08:16
for our boss, Rachel and I.
08:18
And I was kind of like, with this line,
08:22
I was sort of like, not throwing it away,
08:24
but saying, and James, he was,
08:26
he came in so fired up
08:27
and he was like, man, this is like,
08:29
this is it.
08:29
You got to say this thing.
08:31
You are, this is the moment.
08:32
And there was this, this sense of just
08:33
the responsibility that we had as journalists
08:36
and the role that we played and everything.
08:40
Yeah, that was kind of,
08:41
that was apparent reading the script
08:43
and then seeing the movie.
08:45
Yeah, I think that it's clear
08:46
how important that was to James
08:48
from the early development of the project.
