00:00The green jersey, or Maillot Vert, is awarded to the leader of the Points classification,
00:10which is a competition in the Tour de France that started in 1953.
00:14Points for this jersey are given for high finishes in a stage and for winning intermediate
00:19sprints, and although the formula for higher points are awarded based on the level given
00:23to different stages of the race can change over the years.
00:27Historically, more points have been available for the flat stages that tend to favor the
00:31fast-finishing sprinters.
00:33It is for this reason that the leader and ultimate winner of the Points classification, and thus
00:37the wearer of the green jersey, is generally accepted to be the race's best sprinter.
00:43These last few years, Slovakian rider Peter Sagan now holds the record of most green jersey
00:49wins in the race's history.
00:57Thank you very much.
