00:00Big news for India's Tejas Mk-1A fighter jet program.
00:04The head of DRDO, Dr. Samir Kamath, has cleared up something many were guessing about.
00:11Which radar these jets will use?
00:13Some reports had claimed that all 73 Tejas Mk-1A jets ordered so far would be fitted with Israeli-made radars.
00:22But DRDO has now said, that's not quite right.
00:26Dr. Samir Kamath explained in an interview that, yes, the first few Tejas Mk-1A jets will use the Israeli ELM-2052 radar.
00:38But starting with the 41st jet, the plan is to transition to the Indian-made Uttam AESA radar.
00:56A radar functions like the eye of a fighter jet, it enables the pilot to spot enemy aircraft, keep tabs on them, and lock onto several targets, all from a great distance.
01:08AESA radars are cutting-edge and incredibly effective.
01:15Rather than relying on a single moving dish, they utilize hundreds of small modules that can scan instantly and are really hard to jam.
01:24The Uttam AESA radar is proudly developed in India at the DRDO lab in Bengaluru.
01:35It has the impressive capability to track more than 50 targets at distances exceeding 100 kilometers.
01:42It's all about timing, the Air Force is in urgent need of these jets to replace their aging MiG-21s.
01:58That is why the first 40 jets will come equipped with the dependable Israeli radars, ensuring everything stays on track.
02:07India has already ordered 83 Tejas MK-1A jets, 73 fighters, and 10 trainers.
02:21The Indian Air Force is on track to have around 180 of these homegrown jets.
02:27As plans for 97, more have just been approved.
02:31In the end, this update shows India's balanced approach, meeting today's need quickly, while moving steadily towards self-reliance with Indian-made tech.
02:49That is the latest on the Tejas MK-1 radar.
