00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Thank you very much.
02:53To celebrate this deliverance, everyone, soldiers, leaders, and political officers alike,
02:59was given one silver dollar to buy a fancy meal.
03:02But there was one stipulation.
03:05Troops were ordered not to eat too much, lest their stomachs should burst after such a long period
03:11of hunger.
03:12The best breakfast I ever had.
03:22But affordable food wasn't Hadapu's only advantage.
03:26It also had good doctors.

03:45Back in the day, this whole street was lined with the Red Army soldiers,
03:49Resembling nothing so much as shipwrecked soldiers who'd finally made it to dry land.
03:55At last, after all the hardships they'd endured, a chance to get some decent food and recovery
04:02from sickness and injury.
04:07According to historical records, Hadapu was once a very important town, despite its small
04:14size.
04:15The Red Army, having sustained great losses, was now fully replenished.
04:20Amazingly, they found everything they needed to treat their ailments, largely thanks to herbs.
04:37In China, natural plants have been used to treat human diseases for thousands of years.
04:42During the Long March, that's how the wounded survived without the use of Western medicine.
04:57Now, time to take a break from history lessons to learn the secrets of this town's prosperity,
05:03traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
05:09Thanks to its location between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Lowest Plateau, and the Qinling Mountains,
05:17Hadapu's climate is both cold and humid.
05:20Though that's a bad combination for growing crops, it's great for growing certain herbs.
05:26That's what Hadapu is famed for, the best Angelica sinensis in the country.
05:35Also known as Dangue, the root of this ancient herb can be used to improve blood circulation.
05:42Recognition of its therapeutic value is the result of thousands of years of experience and practice.
05:49I'm so happy to meet my new friend, Yu Jun Chang.
05:57He's known here in Mingxian as Danguege.
06:01This amazing place is the largest Angelica root market in all of China.
06:07Each year, 250,000 tons of Chinese medicinal herbs come through here.
06:14That's around 8 billion yen's worth of business.
06:18Well, you can imagine, it's a thrill for me, of course, as a foreigner,
06:21to come here to Mingxian for the first time and to Danguei市場 for the very first time.
06:25I've met so many local farmers and traders, hundreds.
06:31But the thing that I also noticed is that apparently Danguege is pretty famous
06:34because he knows just about everybody.
06:38He says that due both to lack of access and the lack of shared information, for a very long time,
06:58farmers just had to wait for the dealers to buy their herbs.
07:03The dealers would then resell them at higher prices.
07:09But then the local government stepped in and built a more sophisticated and cooperative system,
07:15covering every step of the process, including seeding and fertilizing.
07:21They also constructed this large marketplace right next to a main highway,
07:27while also encouraging direct trading on the internet so as to reach an even larger market.
07:33How much is the price?
07:40When I started at the outside, I started to buy a new site.
07:43I started to buy a new site.
07:45The store that I started to buy would be a little bit.
07:47I always sell it.
07:48The store is not good.
07:49After that, there was a lot of people who asked me to tell me,
07:51you can go to the top of the market.
07:53You buy a good place.
07:55Good sales.
07:56It's a good sales.
07:57Yes.
07:58I said, you know what I was saying?
08:00I said, there's a place where the internet is.
08:03Oh.
08:04I said, do you know the internet?
08:08I don't know.
08:10He said, the internet is a website.
08:12The internet is a website.
08:14I was thinking about the internet and the internet.
08:16Can I learn about it?
08:20We have 250g of the internet.
08:23The new generation of Chinese farmers, such as Yu Jun Chang,
08:33are eager to learn, to gain experience,
08:36and always curious about new things.
08:39Yu Jun Chang didn't own a computer until 2009,
08:44and yet, now here he is,
08:46running a successful internet-based business.
08:50Every day, he receives over a thousand orders from all over the country.
09:03Today, there's a booming and ever-expanding e-commerce market
09:08thanks to mobile phones, the internet, and improvements in logistics.
09:13Put it together, all these developments have changed millions of lives in China for the better.
09:19.

09:48are the latest trend. Yu Jin Chang is teaching everyone how to make one.
10:04From layman to e-commerce expert, Yu Jin Chang's transformation continues. He now has his
10:11own team and brand as well as a career plan.
10:32Dongui and chicken both help improve immunity. The soup is a typical healthy treat found in
10:41Chinese cuisine. Yu Jin Chang is working to become a certified dietitian, hoping to find
10:55more uses for Chinese medicine, such as combining medicinal herbs with fine food.
11:03The Chinese people are very smart. The farmers all around this valley, they are good at understanding
11:19the land and they are always looking for crops that can grow in the barren lands here in northwest
11:25China. These lands have become a most important and spectacular destination for Chinese people,
11:31but they are not the ideal place for human beings to live. For thousands of years and even
11:36recent decades, the local people, to improve and change their lives, all they could do is
11:43learn how to read, education, and go to the big cities.
11:50However, over the past 20 years, the development of China's society and economy means that more
11:56and more people have returned to their homeland, just like Dang Gui Ge. They have a wider vision,
12:03they are more flexible, and they have abundant knowledge. They have discovered that they can
12:07do far more here than back in the big cities.
12:14September 1935. After a brief but sufficient rest in Hadapu, the Central Red Army had to decide
12:25on its next destination.
12:55After they left Jiangxi province, the army was constantly on the move as it considered its next
13:01steps, without really knowing where to go. It was at this time that they learned about the
13:08revolutionary base located to the north. This was the place where they could keep fighting fascism and
13:16achieve building a new China, along with their Red Army comrades, who were just as brave and just as determined.
13:29From the 1920s to 1930s, Chinese revolutionaries built many bases across the country, including
13:37remote areas in the west. Nanliang was where the revolutionary government was located.
13:43Nanliang was where the revolutionary government was located.
13:49This is the inauguration of the
13:56underworld and the fight-air
14:06It is a policy policy policy, and it is a place where it is located at the Lianning University.
14:24Established many decades earlier in 1934,
14:28Lenin Primary School is now also a junior middle school.
14:33Providing the full nine-year compulsory education for children of school age.
14:43Once a student here many years earlier, Yingying is now a Chinese language teacher.
14:50China's 10 million full-time teachers, over 6 million are below the age of 40.
14:56The younger teachers, typically below the age of 35 like Yingying,
15:01account for more than half of all primary and middle school teachers.
15:07It is a heartening indication that more and more young people are attracted to the idea of teaching as a profession.
15:14Along the way, they have discovered modern, cooler methods of teaching
15:19that are bound to go down well with their students.
15:22Living far from the school, these children only go home to spend time with their families at weekends,
15:29giving them much more time to attend to their studies.

16:26About 90 years ago, the many young soldiers who founded this school wanted an opportunity to learn more than anyone.
16:35But they had to fight to make their vision become a reality so that future generations would have the freedom to do so.
16:56Huining, the intellectual capital of Gansu.
17:03Since ancient times, people here have enjoyed a reputation for being top learners.
17:10But before we get into that, let's find out more about how Huining got its name.
17:16In October 1936, the Central Red Army, having arrived in Shanxi earlier, came back to Gansu to join together with two other forces, the Second and the Fourth Fronts.
17:34Finally, the young and brave idealists had come together to make history.
17:46This memorial hall in Huining has over 600 items marking that historical moment, including a photo of an old man and a portrait of a young soldier.
17:59What's the story behind those?
18:01Well, it's over 60 years old.
18:31I was only three years old.
18:34After the war ended, my father was killed.
18:37But the young soldier was killed.
18:40The young soldier didn't leave a picture,
18:42but he didn't leave a name.
18:44My father grew up after that,
18:45I wanted to thank the young soldier for his three children.
18:51He gave his three children,
18:52the young soldier,
18:53the young soldier,
18:54the young soldier,
18:55the young soldier,
18:56and the young soldier.
18:58My Chinese name is Wei Yongchang.
19:02Wei Yongchang.
19:03Yes, my father also wanted us to be proud of our country.
19:12During my conversation with Wei Yongchang at the Memorial Hall,
19:16I came to understand that the Huining people have two sources
19:21which feed their spirits,
19:23which feed their spiritual wealth.
19:25And one source, of course, is the spirit of the Long March.
19:29And that's really an incredible story,
19:32which has such a big part right here in Huining.
19:35And the other is their tradition of cultivating,
19:39reading, and respecting teachers and education.
19:45What you see behind me here is Changzheng Road.
19:50Changzheng Road is 14 kilometers long.
19:53And along this road, there's over 20 schools.
19:58You won't find that the best buildings in the city along this road
20:03are the shopping malls or the office buildings,
20:07but the schools.
20:09the schools.
20:19Huining is located in a typical low-est plateau valley,
20:23characterized by low rainfall and relative inaccessibility.
20:30The people living here had no choice but to farm these barren lands,
20:34hoping their children would be able to make a difference someday in the future.
20:42And the only way that could be done was through education.
20:46And therefore, ever since ancient times,
20:49the people of Huining have been especially devoted to education.
20:52Each of the 284 villages in Huining has at least one library,
21:01which is very impressive.
21:11Wang Dongliang runs this attractive and comfortable library.
21:14He's a native here, who went to college and then returned to start his career as a teacher.
21:21He believes education can make a huge difference in the lives of these children.
21:30Like in urban communities, people can borrow books from these libraries.
21:34For the children here, many of them feel it's more like an activity center
21:40where they get to spend some fun time after school.
21:43For the children here, many of them feel it's more like an activity center
21:45where they get to spend some fun time after school.
21:47the children at home.
21:48That's not so good.
21:50For the children here were a little bit closer to the books.
21:53As the Sims, the kids often study the books and study.
21:56We read books and study them.
21:58Like today, there are more people who might not learn to come abroad.
22:00There must be more of a major teachers to come abroad.
22:01We also want to see our teachers to come abroad.
22:03It is the first time we've come abroad here?
22:05Yes, I said it.
22:07The drawing is a big one.
22:08The book is very good.
22:11I would like to share them with you.
22:13We can sing a song that we sing together.
22:14During the time I spent with the children, I could feel their passion for knowledge.
22:26Francis Bacon once said,
22:28Knowledge itself is power.
22:30I believe these children will realize the meaning of that quote someday.
22:35While visiting here, we discovered that not only does Hui Ming have a tradition of respecting education,
22:41they also have some advanced ideas and approaches regarding education.
22:47Some of these may seem a little out of place at first, but soon we're going to put them to the test.
22:59Today I'm standing at the entrance to Huixi Middle School.
23:03It's one of the top middle schools here in Huinin County, and I heard that they have an Einstein class.
23:09Now, I'm very curious about what that is, and today about half of the students are going to be participating in an Einstein class.
23:15I'm really curious to know what that's all about. Let's check it out.
23:23Hi, Ms. Murray. Nice to meet you.
23:25Ms. Ting, so nice to see you.
23:26Yeah.
23:27I've got some questions for you about the school.
23:29Yeah.
23:30You know, I understand there's an Einstein class. That means all the students are geniuses.
23:36Not exactly Einstein, the way you think. Maybe I'll show you the rehearsal room.
23:43Rehearsal room?
23:44Yeah, and there you can find the answer.
23:47I'm very curious, of course.
23:48Yeah, yeah.
23:49Let's take a look.
23:51It's here.
23:53Yeah.
23:54It's the rehearsal room.
23:57Einstein class is a music class.
24:01Yes.
24:02So, it's not anything to do with the math or...
24:06Yeah.
24:06Wow.
24:06So, here you can find your answer.
24:10The French writer Victor Hugo once said there are three keys to the treasure house of wisdom.
24:15One is a number, one is a letter, and one is a musical note.
24:18The performances of the school orchestras is a tradition that has been going on for decades.
24:32Every year, a new Einstein class comes into being with more eager students.
24:38And the orchestra grows more and more popular, too.
24:42They've even performed in Vienna.
24:44The school has a limited budget, but they are generous with the musical instruments the students need,
24:54and through which they hope to cultivate and encourage their creativity.
25:01Indeed, Einstein himself was a pretty mean player of the violin and piano.
25:12So, the band has already left, and that was really a lot of fun playing together with them.
25:36But then, I thought we were done for the day, but we're not.
25:38I found out there's a special request from one of the students.
25:41It happens to be one of the trumpet players.
25:43Let's find out what it is.
25:44So, you're the trumpet player.
25:47Yes.
25:48What's your name?
25:49My name is Guo Shangrong.
25:50Guo Shangrong.
25:52So, they told me you have a special request.
25:56What's going on?
25:57It's in my mother's birthday.
25:59Ah, Mama's birthday.
26:01Oh, that's a very thoughtful, very nice idea.
26:05I want to give her for her birthday.
26:07That's great.
26:08What's the name of the song?
26:09Tomorrow will be better.
26:11One, two, three, four.
26:14Guo Shangrong invited me to his home, which turned out to be a valuable experience.
26:31This is a big picture.
26:33Yes.
26:33You're in the house.
26:35Yes.
26:35It's a big picture.
26:36I'm going to go to the house.
26:37I'm going to go to the house.
26:38Hi, my dad.
26:39I'm going to go to the house.
26:40I'm going to go to the house.
26:41I'm going to go to the house.
26:42Oh, my dad.
26:43Hi, my dad.
26:44Guo Shangrong.
26:45I'm very happy to come here.
26:46He's so happy to come here.
26:48Here, let's go to the house.
26:49Come here, let's go to the house.
26:51Thank you,相容 and mama.
26:54For me, I want to watch a video.
27:00I want to watch a video.
27:02I want to watch a video.
27:04I want to watch a video.
27:06I want to watch a video.
27:17In this typical Chinese family, I found simplicity and diligence.
27:24During our visit, I noticed hardworking parents and a determined child.
27:31Perhaps the mother's birthday wish was for her boy to achieve greatness in the future.
27:42In fact, one of the factors that made the long march of victory was the brilliance of the minds behind it.
27:48According to Edgar Snow, Mao Zedong was an extensive reader who had profound knowledge of both philosophy and history.
27:59While both Zhou Enlai and Zhu De had studied overseas in Europe and Russia.
28:08As it happened, their intellectual and educational backgrounds turned out to be decisive.
28:13It's great to see that this grand tradition is being nurtured and passed down to new generations of keen learners eager for knowledge.
28:28Youngsters who know what they want, just like those who came before them.
28:32And just as deserts and mountains couldn't stop the idealists of the Red Army all those years ago,
28:43neither will they stand in the way of the next generation.
28:46But it was not an empire and the Kicker-Kong and the French by Ilharata.
28:47It was the only way to make my home life based on what the vast majority of these days are needed.
28:49It has a lot of good idea of the continuance of the long-term care for the parts of the world.
28:51It has to be used in the past.
28:52The people who have been in the past is not the same time.
28:54The people who have been in the past, just like the people who are still here.
28:55The people who have been in the past, just like the people who have been in the past, just like the people who have been in the past.
28:57To be continued...
29:27To be continued...
