Donald Trump signs executive order lifting US sanctions on Syria

The new order does not rescind existing sanctions on ousted longtime President Bashar al-Assad, his top aides, officials and family members who are accused of having committed war crimes and human rights violations against Syrian civilians.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending many U.S. economic sanctions on Syria on Monday.
00:09This follows a promise Trump made to interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Shahra in May.
00:16White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said the move was to encourage the country towards peace.
00:24And this is in an effort to promote and support the country's path to stability and peace.
00:30The order will remove sanctions on Syria while maintaining sanctions on the former President Assad,
00:36his associates, human rights abusers, drug traffickers, persons linked to chemical weapons activities,
00:42ISIS and their affiliates, and Iranian proxies.
00:44Another U.S. government official said the move is aimed at ending Syria's financial isolation
00:52and detracting investment from the region as well as the U.S.
