Russian President Vladimir Putin has called U.S. President Donald Trump a “courageous man,” saying he once again respects America under Trump’s leadership. During his visit to Belarus, Putin praised Trump for surviving last year’s assassination attempt and credited him with restoring direct U.S.-Russia communications.

Trump emphasized that the wars in Ukraine and Gaza wouldn’t have happened under his presidency. Putin, speaking from Minsk, also said Trump is sincerely trying to broker peace in Ukraine. Since returning to office, Trump has reportedly spoken to Putin five times, reigniting direct channels cut off under Biden. The remarks underscore a dramatic shift in global tone and U.S. diplomacy under Trump’s second term.

00:00I deeply respect the current American president.
00:23He's traveled a very long and difficult path.
00:27There were hardships along the way, on his way to the White House.
00:32You know that he survived two attempts on his life.
00:36He's a very courageous person, that's for sure.
00:40As for what he's doing within the country, within the United States,
00:45or when it comes to the Middle East and his efforts there to achieve peace,
00:52for example, in the Ukraine crisis, we value that a lot.
00:57And let me say that publicly again, like I said before,
01:01President Trump, I believe, sincerely wants to achieve peace in Ukraine.
01:07President Trump reached out to you to help you with the Iran crisis.
01:26Well, you made some nice statements today. Did you see the statements?
01:38I saw the statement.
01:39Very nice. Vladimir Putin made some very nice statements today.
01:42Look, he respects our country again.
01:45He didn't respect it a year ago, I can tell you right now.
01:48But Putin respects our country, and President Xi of China respects our country.
01:54And Kim Jong-un respects — they respect our country again.
01:57We were not a country that was respected just a year ago.
02:00We had a president that was incompetent.
02:03We had bad people circulating around this desk, this beautiful, resolute desk.
02:07They had, I guess, evil intentions.
02:09They were — you couldn't be that stupid.
02:11I mean, they had evil intentions.
02:13But the world respects our country again.
02:18Thank you very much, everybody.
