00:00A polar blast is gripping Australia's southeast this morning with hazardous surf in Sydney and
00:05flash flooding in Melbourne. Let's bring in senior meteorologist Jonathan Howe live from
00:10the Weather Bureau. Good morning to you Jonathan. It is getting pretty wild along the coastline.
00:15What are the current warnings? Yeah good morning Jane. It has been very wild. 24 to 48 hours right
00:21across southeast and parts of the country. We do have a number of wind warnings current across
00:24the southeast. Now they've all been cancelled. We are now seeing those winds easing but there is
00:29still a lot of debris such as trees and branches across the road so we are reminding people to
00:33take care out there. It is also quite windy across Sydney at the moment and also very cold. It feels
00:37like temperature at the airport is around zero and for western Sydney the feels like temperature is
00:41around minus one so very wintry out there. Yeah absolutely that wind particularly has been pretty
00:45crazy in Melbourne and Sydney as you said. What's causing it? Yes so we've had a very strong cold
00:51front move through the southeast of the country. We have seen these strong winds impacting South
00:54Australia, Tasmania. Yesterday really focusing around Sydney at the airport we did see wind gusts.
00:59More than 90 kilometres an hour. More than 100 kilometres an hour south across the Illawarra
01:03and in Melbourne also wind gusts above 80 kilometres an hour did cause some damage around
01:07there as well. Thankfully those winds are really easing off through today but reminding people to
01:10take care out there today. Okay you mentioned those pretty cold temperatures this morning. It does
01:15feel freezing. How cold is it going to get? Yeah so behind this cold front we do have a very cold air
01:21mass so we have seen some very healthy snow dumps across the Alpine resorts. Also snow across Oberon last night.
01:27We are seeing that snow gradually easing up and contracting to higher territory through today but
01:31we are in for some very frosty nights. So widespread frost expected today across New South Wales
01:35all the way up into southern Queensland and we are expecting those cold mornings to continue all the
01:40way into the weekends. We definitely need to rug up. Absolutely. Jonathan Howe, thank you for your time this morning.
01:44.
