00:00EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Hungary to lift its ban on Budapest Pride
00:08in her most direct intervention on the issue with Viktor Orban's government.
00:13The Hungarian Parliament recently banned public events that show homosexuality or gender change to minors
00:20under a law called the Child Protection Act, leading to the ban of the Pride March,
00:25meant to take place this weekend. In a video posted on X, the EU chief called on authorities
00:31to let the event proceed without threats of sanctions.
00:36In Europe, marching for your rights is a fundamental freedom.
00:41You have the right to love who you want to love and be exactly who you are.
00:45Our union is one of equality and non-discrimination.
00:49Orban reacted nearly immediately to the video. He said he urged,
00:54quote, the European Commission to refrain from interfering in the law enforcement affairs,
01:00adding where it has no role to play.
01:03The Commission has not yet announced legal action against Hungary,
01:07but is analysing the elements of the new law.
