The Most Haunted crew investigate Fitz Manor in Shropshire. The pungent aroma of tobacco is often detected in the Orange room. Many witnesses claim to have seen a ghostly woman in the Red room and a priest was murdered in the dining room.

00:08await the most haunted team in Shropshire.
00:10Oh, Jesus!
00:30Hello, and welcome to Most Haunted.
00:41This week, we've brought you to rural Shropshire,
00:44to a place that has so many regular hauntings,
00:46we just had to come.
00:48This manor has experienced ghostly shapes,
00:51unexplained noises,
00:52and allegedly, it has two hidden tunnels.
01:00Can we unravel the secrets of Fitzmanor?
01:02We have 24 hours to find out.
01:10The original structure of Fitzmanor
01:13was believed to have been a Saxon hall house,
01:15which was first recorded in the 12th century.
01:18The manor is mentioned in the Doomsday Book
01:20and also in the Charter of Henry I.
01:23The house has its own church
01:24and was once owned by the Bishop of Shrewsbury.
01:27The church has been connected with the manor
01:29for many years,
01:30and in one such case,
01:32a priest was supposed to have been crucified
01:34inside the house for being homosexual.
01:37The manor is now owned by the Bailey family
01:39and has been since the late 18th century.
01:42Many members of the family and their guests
01:44have experienced paranormal activity
01:46and seen ghostly apparitions.
01:53Fitzmanor is an extremely old property.
01:57It probably goes back to the time of the Saxons.
02:00So we're talking of how many generations of people
02:03have lived and died in this house.
02:06The first recorded family, about 1,200.
02:10That's 800 years of people that we definitely know lived here.
02:15A dramatic event occurred here many years ago.
02:21Allegedly, a priest was crucified against one of these walls.
02:26Since then, sobs, groans and moans are heard on a regular basis.
02:32And the family dogs, normally placid creatures,
02:34have turned against their owners in this room.
02:37It's fascinating, they have two dogs here
02:40and on frequent occasions,
02:43the family are there, either watching television or working,
02:46and all of a sudden, one of the dogs sort of stands up,
02:51stares into the corner of the room
02:52and starts barking.
02:54Completely extraordinary.
02:57They, on occasion, have just gone totally mad.
03:01It's as if they're looking at something that we can't see.
03:05Their hair will stand on end, they'll bark, they'll growl,
03:08and nothing can induce them to go towards
03:10where we think they're seeing something.
03:13Then, after a couple of minutes, they are quiet
03:16and it's as if nothing's happened at all.
03:17There is a story, an ecclesiastical story,
03:20of a priest that was reputedly crucified
03:23on the wall of, I believe, the drawing room
03:26for being a homosexual.
03:29Now, how true that is,
03:31I don't know whether people were actually crucified
03:33inside houses, I don't know.
03:35But the fact that there is the ghost of a priest here,
03:38of course, leads me to believe that is true
03:40because a large manor house would probably have
03:44either its resident priest
03:46or certainly visiting priests
03:48at the time of Queen Elizabeth.
03:50There's probably priest holes in this building as well.
03:53Who knows what might be bricked up in that priest hole?
04:00The figure of a Victorian lady has been seen in this room.
04:04She's been seen 14 times in the last few years.
04:08Many people have likened the apparition to this picture
04:10which was found in the attic.
04:13She doesn't just confine herself to the house,
04:15she's also been seen in the local graveyard.
04:18Was she buried there?
04:20I was chatting to my teddy bears,
04:22as you do when you're six years old.
04:24Turned to look at the doorway.
04:25Whether I felt a presence, I have no idea.
04:27And there was a lady in the doorway in Victorian clothing.
04:31Very, very, very kind-faced, hair swept backwards.
04:34I was completely terrified.
04:36I had no idea who she was.
04:37And then she just disappeared down into the floor
04:39and that was the last I saw of her.
04:41She just evaporated into the floor,
04:43is all I can describe.
04:45Guests come down and say,
04:48who was that old lady on the stairs?
04:50And of course, there was no old lady there.
04:52She has been seen quite a few times,
04:54so I know I can have gone completely mad.
04:56No-one in the house smokes,
05:17and yet a very strong, pungent smell of tobacco
05:20fills this room and totally disappears.
05:23A past resident used to stay here,
05:26and he was known to smoke a pipe.
05:29Could his spirit still be here?
05:32He had a particular brand of tobacco
05:34that, of course, was well-known to the family.
05:37He's been dead ten years.
05:39He's only buried across in the graveyard,
05:42and they often smell his tobacco in the room at night,
05:47in the room that he used to sit on many occasions.
05:53Phil Wyman, our paranormal investigator,
05:56had arrived earlier at the location
05:58in order to conduct a baseline test.
06:01This is in the event that if any paranormal activity does occur,
06:04Phil can quickly evaluate the readings scientifically.
06:08OK, Phil, this is a beautiful, beautiful house.
06:10Lovely gardens.
06:11There's an awful lot of history here.
06:13What particular place are you looking forward
06:14to investigating tonight?
06:16I'm actually looking forward to investigating
06:17in the sitting room or dining room.
06:19Legend has it there was a priest crucified for his sexuality
06:23and walled up behind the panels there.
06:26It's also the place where I've set up the trigger object,
06:28so hopefully we can get some kind of movement
06:29with it being a cross and the religious connection.
06:32What other things are you going to be doing tonight?
06:34Well, we've set up the motion detectors
06:36on the upstairs corridor.
06:37This is where footsteps have been heard,
06:39so if anything breaks the beam,
06:41it will sound an alarm,
06:42and we'll be able to get up there
06:42and check what's causing the problem.
06:44And also there's been sort of noises heard as well, I guess.
06:47Lots of noises.
06:48That's quite spooky.
06:49Yep, loads, like I say, loads of footsteps.
06:52Sighs and groans.
06:53Now, that's an interesting one.
06:55It'd be good if we could get some of that on camera
06:57or on the dictaphone, for instance.
06:59And also the smell of tobacco.
07:01That's right, it's the orange room.
07:02Apparently there's a tobacco smoke smell associated with it.
07:05Now, we've had this in all sorts of locations.
07:07We've had babysit smells, rose smells, smoke smells,
07:11that kind of thing.
07:11What a lot of people probably don't realise
07:13is that most paranormal activity or occurrences
07:16are actually smells or movement of objects or noises.
07:19Less than 10%, I believe,
07:21of people who actually experience paranormal activity see ghosts.
07:28It's quite an interesting place.
07:31Lots of stories, active stories.
07:33We have a family here
07:34who actually are experiencing things now.
07:39So, who knows what tonight's going to bring us.
07:44I definitely believe in ghosts.
07:46I've grown up with them.
07:47It doesn't bother me,
07:48but I find it actually strangely comforting
07:50that there's something else in the house.
07:52But I'm fascinated to see whether Derek can find something
07:55or whether any of you can see something here on film.
07:58It would really amaze me.
07:59We were eager to begin the investigation.
08:04All day, we had heard different accounts
08:06of the strange things that had been happening in this home.
08:09We wanted to find out who these spirits were,
08:11and to do that,
08:12we invited spiritualist medium Derek Okora to help us.
08:16We started upstairs in the orange room,
08:18where many people had smelt the strong fragrance of tobacco.
08:22Helen Bailey's grandfather had slept in this room
08:25and had been a heavy smoker,
08:26but would Derek be able to give us more information
08:28and tell us his name?
08:30This should be like a smoke-free zone,
08:33but not to the spirit person, this man.
08:36He doesn't care less whether it's a smoke-free zone house,
08:41because he's going to smoke and no-one's going to stop him.
08:46So it's like saying he's the only one here that smokes,
08:49and he doesn't care less.
08:53So that was his enjoyment.
08:55He smoked, and can you not...
08:58Because I'm getting this with the residual energy,
09:02not so much in physically, you know, spiritually doing it.
09:05Is it really strong to you?
09:05Yes, yeah, absolutely.
09:07And, well, I would go as far to say this.
09:11If a person was sleeping in here,
09:13whether people do sleep in here, I don't know.
09:15I know there's a bed here.
09:16But if a person slept here,
09:18and it was a person that smoked,
09:20this tobacco is so strong,
09:24that even the smoker in this bed would sit up and go,
09:27whoa.
09:29Now, if it was a non-smoker,
09:31they'd jump out of that bed,
09:33because it's so strong.
09:34It'd be so noticeable,
09:35even if the windows were open.
09:37I know his essence comes here,
09:41and he does this.
09:43Now, maybe it can be checked.

09:49And, again, I'm talking about this,
09:51but I want to go also into this passageway.

10:03and it was like a psychic shield going,
10:05woof.
10:06And just for a couple of seconds,
10:09my mind was trained,
10:11and I was made to be trained,
10:12on this movement in this passageway.

10:17And purposely,
10:18purposely,
10:19the individual spirit person,
10:21separate to the man with the tobacco,
10:23because I'm getting now,
10:26and I'm very hopeful tonight,
10:28we've got what we call a child movement up here.
10:31A youngster.

10:33not just the youngster,
10:34we've got a...

10:39The spirit person is a heavy foot.
10:41So I said to Sam,

10:49this individual spirit,
10:51pronounces his walk,
10:53at sometimes at speed,
10:55like a small trot,
10:57all along this passageway.

11:04the spirit person is purposely,
11:06it's like doing this.

12:49because she realises the body language
12:51of different people
12:52who have actually seen her.
12:54She comes in here,
12:56she walks up and down this passageway.
13:00Who is she?
13:02She's a lady,
13:04at this moment in time,
13:05a lady who's got very,
13:07very strong links
13:07with the history of this home.
13:09You know when we talk about
13:12where certain family members
13:14down a family tree,
13:15we come across periodically
13:18a person that really stands out
13:20in the family tree,
13:22you know,
13:23about the personality,
13:24character and what have you.
13:25And I feel that this lady
13:26was a very assured lady
13:29in her personality traits
13:32in some manner.
13:34What era would you say she was from?
13:37Oh my gosh.
13:41It's got to be,
13:42I may be totally out here,
13:49but I would go to maybe
13:511600 and something.
13:55Not to 1700,
13:571600 and something.
13:59I get the name Margaret.

14:03I feel that name
14:04must be linked in some manner.
14:06And I don't feel she got a,
14:08what we call,
14:08great age, okay?

14:11But I feel that she is resident here
14:13as a spirit.
14:15As we've got a family
14:15who live here physically,
14:17she is here also.

14:20The drawing room is a place
14:21that intrigued us all.
14:23A priest was supposedly crucified
14:24on one of the walls
14:25and the family have often felt
14:27uncomfortable in this room.
14:29We needed the priest's name.

14:58but two were heavily involved.

15:07that was crucified
15:08and there was a man here
15:11that was against this area
15:13by this wall here
15:14and literally crucified.

15:22they couldn't plead his innocence
15:23because they wouldn't listen
15:26to him anyway,
15:27whether he was innocent
15:28or whether he wasn't
15:30and this is what
15:32has been given to me
15:33very strongly
15:33is that
15:35the accusations,

15:38were correct
15:39of what they accused him of.

20:53one leading to the church

20:55leading towards
20:55another manor house
20:56on the opposite side
20:57of the River Severn.

40:07On the whole, an extremely interesting investigation.

40:15could not I tried to look up this place on the internet and you can find nothing
40:22we are talking of first-hand accounts from the people that live here that have
40:28experienced it when I first come into the room with a poor priest and appeared
40:33to have been terribly terribly hurt and eventually his life taken from him is
40:42such a cruel cruel way and it shocked me because earlier during the course in
40:48the investigation in this lovely home nothing seemed to be of that level so it
40:55did shape me to think the idea that something like that had actually happened
41:00the seance when we got around to doing the seance later on in the evening that
41:05went quite well I thought there were some strange noises that we kept picking up it
41:11sounded like something was tapping the table somebody was tapping the table
41:15none of the crew were actually doing this and this happened on more than one
41:19occasion so that was quite impressive and I thought that went quite well fit man it
41:24is actively haunted however I don't believe that this activity is on what we
41:31call a strict regular day-by-day occurrence I don't feel that is happening but what I
41:40do feel is happening is that when the activity is here these spirit people
41:46really go over the top to make their mark and to be heard and seen
41:52our night at Fitz Manor had certainly been interesting one thing that intrigued us
42:01all was the tunnel Derek had told us that the archway in the cellar was the
42:05beginnings of a tunnel where a little boy called Thomas had been crushed to death
42:08the Bailey family had kindly agreed to try to break through the wall after an
42:13afternoon of digging there didn't seem to be a breakthrough and since filming no
42:18tunnel has been found
42:22what's quite interesting about Fitz Manor is that most people's experiences seem to
42:28be in various parts of the house when in fact on this investigation no real
42:33unusual experiences were experienced apart from in the cellar it's only in the
42:36cellar where people were reporting something unusual happening and perhaps
42:40that's not too surprising from a non paranormal perspective because first of
42:45all Yvette reports there being a very unusual and very horrible smell down there
42:49well again with a dark cold and damp cellar perhaps you will get from some
42:54unusual and rotting type smells also Carl and Stuart when they spent time down
42:59there they were reporting hearing some unusual sounds but again with the being an old
43:03cellar you might find that bits of stone will drop from the ceiling hitting some
43:07of the rubbish on the floor and perhaps creating these sounds and when you're
43:11sat there in the middle of the night or even four o'clock in the morning you
43:14might interpret those sounds as being something a bit more paranormal did
43:18someone move the table no I've opened my eyes quite a few times and just looked
43:23around to see if anyone has to make an icon so I thought four or five times at the
43:26table has moved slightly no thought just one of the unusual things that
43:29happened during the seance is that people reported the table apparently moving now
43:34I don't find that too surprising because everybody was touching the table and it
43:37wouldn't take too much effort on any one person's behalf to actually make the
43:41table move that's not to say I think somebody was deliberately cheating or
43:44deliberately trying to cause the table to move but it doesn't take much
43:47movement from that person to actually for it to happen what I would like to
43:51perhaps see the group do more often is to actually try to make the table tilt
43:55some groups have reportedly been able to do this when they meet regularly and
43:59conduct these kinds of seances and attempt to make the table tilt and
44:02sometimes even levitate under their hands some of the footage of this is
44:06usually not that striking so I think here the group has a really good chance to
44:10perhaps pick up some of this unusual phenomenon on tape so I would look
44:13forward to seeing more of those kinds of experiments in the future there are
44:18certain places in Fitzmanor that every member of the crew felt uncomfortable in we
44:23all felt that there was definitely something there watching us what that
44:27something was we will never know until the next time
