00:00On this day in space. In 2000, NASA announced possible evidence of present
00:06day liquid water on Mars. Scientists analyzed data from NASA's Mars Global
00:11Surveyor spacecraft and found what appeared to be gullies formed by flowing
00:14water. They also found debris and mud deposits these flows may have left
00:18behind. Spacecraft on and around the planet had already seen evidence that
00:23vast oceans of water existed on Mars a long time ago, but researchers have yet
00:27to confirm that liquid water still exists on the planet today. They have,
00:31however, found water ice at Mars's north and south poles. Gullies and other dark
00:36streaks on the Martian surface known as recurring slope lineae look like they
00:39might contain super salty water brine, but so far no real data has confirmed the
00:44presence of liquid water anywhere on the Martian surface. And that's what happened
00:48on this day in space.
