00:01On this day in space.
00:03In 1983, the crew of the space shuttle Challenger, including America's first space woman, Sally Ride,
00:09deployed an Indonesian communications satellite called Palapa B-1 into orbit.
00:13Palapa is a series of satellites owned by the Indonesian telecommunication company, Telcom.
00:18All nine satellites were launched by the U.S., starting with the first in 1976.
00:23This made Indonesia the first developing country to operate its own domestic satellite system.
00:28Palapa satellites now provide communication to more than 6,000 islands in Indonesia.
00:33And that's what happened on this day in space.
