00:00You spent three months to learn everything from me.

00:02Yeah.

00:08I saw the video that you guys put out, the big casting call looking for the new karate kid.

00:13And I wanted to ask Ben, like, what was the audition process like?

00:16How much, did you have to show off your martial arts?

00:19Yeah, it was brutal and terrifying.

00:23And it took like a month and a half, like seven different tapes and, you know, meetings and meetings.

00:29But they were thorough because they were really specific about what they wanted.

00:34And so, you know, it's a long, hard process.

00:37And there was a martial arts section.

00:39But I'm really happy and I feel lucky that, you know, that what they wanted was me.

00:47Luckiest boy in the world.

00:48Yeah.

00:50Where were you when you found out that you got the part?

00:53I was at my home.

00:55I was at my abode.

00:56I think I got the call when I was in the bathroom and then I shifted it to somewhere with better lighting.

01:05And then, Ralph and Jackie, were you involved at all in the casting process?

01:09What were your thoughts when you found out that he got the part?

01:11I got the tape of Ben's screen test when they were.

01:16But I think, I don't know if you knew at that point.

01:19It wasn't like, do you approve?

01:20It wasn't that.

01:22I was more supporting the filmmaker and his choice because he fought for Ben.

01:27I mean, there were a lot of, I'm sure, candidates.

01:30But it's the choice of one.

01:32When you see the movie, it is truly the choice of one.

01:34I saw that tape and then I watched a little bit of American Born Chinese, which was a series he was in.

01:41And you saw the pieces of his humor and sort of likability.

01:50You know, so it was just, but more so when working with him on the set, then everything came really up when I started seeing him.

01:56Yeah, I got the video too.

01:58I saw the video, video, all the same.

02:02You know, they speak English, they do some martial arts.

02:05Then I just, why this guy?

02:07I just, oh, okay.

02:10They already choose for me.

02:12That's Ben Wong, he will be a karate kid.

02:15I just wondering, why him?

02:17I don't know.

02:18But through my stunt team, they call me, wow, the young guy is so clever.

02:23But whatever we teach him, he learns so fast.

02:28Not as good as me, but good.

02:30Yeah, I'm really happy with that assessment.

02:34And did you guys give him any advice when he started since you guys have done these movies before?

02:39Nah, just be yourself.

02:40I mean, that's this character, you know, the protagonist in this universe of these Karate Kid films.

02:47I mean, it's the essence of genuine truth of character.

02:54So the more Ben is infused in Lee Fong, the more we believe him on this ride.

03:02And that's how I portrayed it back in the day in my version.

03:05And I see the same thing in him when you look in his eyes, when you're on the journey of this character, what he's going through.

03:12You're leaning forward because you're taking that ride with him.

03:15And that's the relatability of it all.

03:19Yeah, I think acting-wise, no doubt it.

03:23He's very good.

03:24I can tell.

03:25But only when the action sequence comes in, just maybe a little trick, little secret things I just said, I taught him.

03:35But he just, now he learned everything.

03:39I mean, he spent 20 years, he spent three months, he learned everything from me.

03:45Pay me.

03:47And then I have a quick game of this or that.

03:50Which do you prefer, stuffed crust pizza or New York style pizza?

03:54New York.

03:55Yeah, I like a New York style pizza.

03:59I'm, I don't know, we're both.

04:03New York City or Los Angeles?

04:06I'm a New York guy.

04:07Los Angeles.

04:08Taking the subway or riding a scooter?

04:10Subway.

04:13Training in a dojo or training on a rooftop?

04:15Dojo.

04:17I would say dojo.

04:19I don't have to wear sunscreen and I could have air conditioning if I'd like.
