00:00Well, really emotional scenes here amongst this huge crowd of over 80,000 people in Palo Alto, about 30 miles south of San Francisco.
00:14Let's take a look at the teams. Brazil have fielded a very consistent line-up in this World Cup, no fewer than 10 players figuring in every game before today.
00:21But now their coach, Carlos Alberto Pereira, has decided to make a change. He's left out the captain, Rai, who had a disappointing game against Sweden, and brought in number 17, Mazzinho, who's been used only as a substitute so far.
00:35He'll give us an attacking option on the right, says the coach.
00:39The United States also make changes. Derby County's John Haag suspended, of course, and Bruce Wynalda, who scored their opening goal of the competition against Switzerland, is left out.
00:49Into their places come number 7, Hugo Perez, an experienced midfielder, and up front, Kobe Jones, a pacey striker, who's come on as a sub in all three games so far.
01:01So the Brazilians, the only country who've played in every World Cup finals since the competition began, kick-off against the host nation, the United States of America,
01:14playing today in red and white stripes in front of millions and millions of people who perhaps don't have a full understanding of the game as those of us in Europe and certainly South America do,
01:29but are beginning to take what's a new sport to them very much to their hearts.
01:33It can't really be overstated the importance of this day in the history of football in the United States.
01:39If they do well here, who knows how well the game may do in the future.
01:45Alboa with the early header away for them.
01:49In midfield, they have Ramos and Dooley patrolling the centre.
01:54Sorba and Perez on the flex.
01:59A good early run here by the number 5, Tom Dooley.
02:03Marcio Santos across to cover.
02:06Great hero, Dooley scored the first goal in the 2-0 defeat of England last year.
02:13Lalas has come forward, the big centre-back for the United States.
02:17The man who scored with a headed goal against England last summer.
02:20That's a good ball and Dooley has beaten the offside trap and Lalas was in a great position then and went sliding in and just missed it.
02:35Dooley got himself initially behind the Brazilian back four.
02:39They're all complaining to the referee that there should have been an offside decision here.
02:43But look, he timed his move perfectly.
02:45He beat the offside trap and if Lalas had been a yard further forward, we could have had the most dramatic start imaginable here, Kevin.
02:53Yeah, a tremendous ball in, a well-timed run.
03:03They are coming forward from his defensive role.
03:06Set up for Gunga to swing it in and woes the marking, it has to be, oh my word!
03:14The Brazilians miss a glorious opportunity to take the lead.
03:19Marcio Santos sliding in and couldn't quite reach it.
03:22And what happened to the American marking then?
03:25They were absent without leave at the back.
03:27Well, they're very naive.
03:28They've all come out just en masse without thinking about the time the guys got on the ball.
03:32And they've been very, very lucky not to go on one goal down there.
03:38The American people watching all wonder how the heck people can get that free.
03:42But it's a naive system that's got them into trouble before, I know that.
03:49Moeller comes to that one and was beaten to it.
03:52But I think he just did enough in getting across the face of the six-yard box to force things.
04:00It's another corner though.
04:01He's never going to get there to this one, Alan.
04:03But what he does do, he keeps coming.
04:05And that just makes players wary.
04:08I think he took his eye off the ball, the Brazilian.
04:10And I felt it should have been a goalkeeper.
04:15And Moeller again hesitates.
04:18And the shot back into the crowd of players.
04:20Didn't find its target.
04:22And Jorginho plays it through the dumbed-down.
04:24And there's another useful ball.
04:26And Moeller just beaten on the far post by Pepeto's spectacular effort.
04:31But it went wide.
04:34And Brazil still wait for the breakthrough with 26 minutes gone.
04:39Great ball in.
04:40And people remember Pepeto having another chance like this early on in the competition.
04:45I think the first game, and he put it over.
04:46That was a better effort.
04:47He kept the ball down.
04:48But he just wasn't able to get it on target.
04:50But there's two of them queuing up here.
04:52Does everything right.
04:53It sits down.
04:55Just misses the target.
04:55It's predicted Colombia would win this World Cup though.
05:01Just shows you what ex-footballers know about football.
05:05Corner kick.
05:06Marcio Santos getting in.
05:07It was just flicked away in the nick of time before he reached it.
05:10Dunga plays it back in again.
05:12Offside.
05:13Once again, the linesman has flagged offside.
05:15Even before the header hit the foot of the post,
05:17the linesman was standing with his flag very high and very certain of himself.
05:23And I think Marcio Santos probably realized that as well.
05:29And the decision was correct once again.
05:33Against Mazzinho, but the referee has said play on.
05:37Dunga.
05:39Romario, lovely little ball from Romario.
05:44Pepeto moving forward.
05:45Leonardo to his left.
05:49Oh, it's a good cross.
05:50Miola missed it.
05:50Lallis didn't for the huge relief of the Americans.
05:56Lallis has done really well.
05:57Here's Mazzinho again.
05:58Brazil have picked up the pace here.
06:01Leonardo in possession.
06:02Tries the shot.
06:03And Miola's handling was absolutely superb then.
06:06Because if that had been allowed to spill out,
06:08both Pepeto and Romario were waiting to snap up the rebound.
06:12A lovely move again.
06:15And I thought he'd gone down too early here.
06:17He starts to go down very early,
06:18but he gets it spot on, Miola, to be fair to him.
06:22Really enjoying this one.
06:24For totally different reasons than maybe the games we saw yesterday.
06:27Lovijo and Ramos slinging on that far side.
06:33And Ramos is dumped to the ground again.
06:36And he's riding in agony.
06:38It's a red car.
06:39It's a red car for Leonardo.
06:42What a sensation.
06:43Three minutes to half-time.
06:47And one of Brazil's outstanding players
06:49has been dismissed for that challenge on Ramos.
06:53The referee had absolutely no doubt.
06:55And it looks as though it could be a bad injury as well.
06:58And the American players are furious here.
07:00And Brazil are reduced to ten men in the first half.
07:04With Leonardo sent off.
07:07Well, I'd love to see that again.
07:08I didn't think he'd done that much wrong again.
07:12Maybe it's just my eyes from here,
07:14but it didn't look like such a bad challenge.
07:18Well, here we go again.
07:19Ramos in possession here.
07:20He had his back trying to hold off the Brazilian.
07:23He's holding in.
07:24I mean, it's...
07:25Ah, elbow.
07:27I think that's why the referee has decided to dismiss him.
07:31It wasn't the initial challenge.
07:32I think he decided here that Leonardo's left elbow came out.
07:37Yeah, but he's being held.
07:38Right elbow.
07:39No, that's an elbow though, isn't it?
07:40Yes, but this is one of the big bones of contention in football now.
07:45And look at the wound, Kevin.
07:47Yeah, I accept it was wrong what he did.
07:50But the first challenge, the first foul came from the other guy.
07:54Well, I can't agree with you.
07:56Honestly, I think that was a very, very bad elbow by Leonardo.
08:01But irrespective of what happened before, you've surely got to say that if you do that, you've got to go off the field.
08:07You know?
08:08You don't agree?
08:14Under the captain of Brazil.
08:16Three minutes of stoppage time at him.
08:18Lalas has to defend, and again, and that hits the post.
08:25Milona, seeing the shot, beat him, but not beat the upright.
08:31The linesman has flagged, and I think in the middle of all that, maybe the half-time whistle has gone as well.
08:35So Brazil almost took the lead here through Romario, literally on the stroke of half-time.
08:42Lalas beaten for once, but the post came to the United States' rescue, and all the drama came late on here.
08:50And there's certainly been an awful lot of talking points, and unexpected ones at that, in this dramatic match between Brazil,
08:58who are now down to ten men after the sending off of Leonardo, and the United States.
09:03The half-time score, with Milona unbeaten, is Brazil nil, the United States nil.
09:10We'll be back soon.
09:12He is on now as replacement for the injured Tab Ramos, who was involved in the incident in which Leonardo of Brazil was dismissed.
09:21So Brazil start the second half, looking for a place in the quarter-finals against Holland in Dallas in five days' time,
09:28but reduced to ten men, remember, and that's certainly going to make things interesting in this second half.
09:36Zinho seems to have slotted in nominally to the Leonardo role on the left-hand side of Brazil's defence.
09:44That rather clumsy ball forward by Marcio Santos got a lucky break for Brazil.
09:48In the coming forward and almost releasing Romario, Clavijo with a good interception, though, for the Americans.
09:54And Bruce Rinalda gets his first taste of the action against the mighty Brazil.
10:00The long ball forward, Eric Rinalda, I think I called him to reach there.
10:06Brazil win it back.
10:09Dunga in possession for them, they're capped in.
10:11Brazil win it back.
10:15Out again to Mazzinho.
10:20Mazzinho helping it back to Marcio Santos.
10:26Aldaya.
10:30A little layoff from Zinho.
10:41Sorba for the United States
10:45Sound first half as well in the midfield
10:48Rinalda
10:48And he wins the throw
10:57Signo
11:00Still
11:06Maro Silva keeps possession going
11:08And finds Jorginho
11:10Cross too deep surely for Barbato
11:13And he keeps possession again
11:17And finds Jorginho
11:18Dunga
11:21Jorginho on the right
11:23Brazil have gone straight on to the attack
11:25Here in the second half
11:26And the ball goes in towards Romario
11:28He almost kept his goal again
11:33Record alive then Romario
11:35But the United States by the skin of their teeth
11:37Have got away with it again
11:39It was the post to their rescue
11:41In the dying seconds of the first half
11:43This time
11:44The combination of bad luck
11:46And Tony Miola's dive
11:49Has thwarted Brazil again
11:51It's still 0-0 here
11:53But they're pressing hard
11:55Jorginho pulling it infield
11:56Looking again for Romario in the middle
11:58Lalas gets it clear
11:59Real pressure now on the United States
12:01You just get the feeling Alan
12:04Don't you
12:04They've just turned it up a gear
12:05Gone up a notch
12:06And I think American have to defend
12:09Very very stoutly in the first 10-15 minutes
12:11Jorginho again
12:13Jorginho again
12:14Dunger in the centre
12:16The foot's on the accelerator pedal
12:19Right now for Brazil
12:21Bobbato
12:22Jorginho and Romario in the middle
12:24He cuts it back instead for Mazzinho
12:27But the cross a disappointing one
12:28We're going to have another look here
12:34At that moment
12:35When Brazil
12:36Looked as though they'd almost found the breakthrough
12:38Dooley hooking it away
12:41Almost off his own line
12:42Dunger
12:44Mazzinho
12:47Dunger thinks about the shot
12:54And thinks again
12:55Mazzinho
12:57Romario onside
12:59Or is he
13:00No
13:01The linesman has flagged
13:03He's offside
13:05The goal won't count
13:06The official's done a very good job in this match
13:10Because there's a few times when you've thought
13:12I don't know if he's quite got that right
13:14But it's always been proved right
13:15And if you look here again
13:17There's a two possibly offside
13:19Not a great deal to do
13:22Claudio Taparell
13:23He's had it all in impressive style
13:25Now the long ball forward was intended for Romario
13:29Balboa slips
13:30And Romario might still get there
13:32Here he is
13:33Great chance for Brazil
13:34Can you believe it?
13:42Can you believe it?
13:44If there's one man
13:45Playing in this World Cup
13:47You would have put your mortgage on
13:49To score a goal in this situation
13:51It's Romario
13:52My goodness me
13:54If they lose this game
13:57That he'll have nightmares about this
13:58Because
13:59He just left himself a little bit to do
14:02Spot on
14:04And I think the referee's right
14:05I mean
14:06He's had enough of all these yellow cards
14:08Without players encouraging even more
14:10I don't know who does the paperwork
14:11But they
14:11Still need
14:13Need a secondary
14:15And that
14:16Brazil just pick it up again
14:17Here in midfield
14:18And go forward dangerously
14:20With Romario
14:20And he slips a good looking ball through
14:22And there's a chance
14:23He has
14:23And it's in
14:24They've got the goal
14:26Roberto
14:2717 minutes to go
14:39And Brazil
14:40Get a vital breakthrough
14:42Romario
14:44The goal scorer
14:46This time
14:47Romario
14:48The goal provider
14:50Well
14:51They've been very quiet
14:54But what a great ball that is
14:56But the finish is even better
14:57He had no right to score from there
15:00And I don't think
15:01You can look at Miola there
15:03I think he did most things right
15:04This is a great run again from Romario
15:07So much strength
15:08The ball's still close to him
15:09Lovely ball in
15:11But what about the finish?
15:14You say Babaito and Romario
15:15Don't get on very well
15:16But they do on a football pitch
15:19And that's what matters
15:20Jose Babaito
15:25Has got the vital goal
15:28That places Brazil
15:30Now just 15 minutes away from a place
15:33In the quarterfinals of the 1994 World Cup
15:37It has not been an easy passage for them today
15:39By any means
15:40They've come up against an American side
15:42That has played above itself
15:43They have lost a player
15:45At the end of the first half
15:47Leonardo sent off
15:49But despite all that
15:51The Samba beat
15:52Is very much in evidence now
15:55Here in the Stamford Stadium
15:57He's covered every inch of this ground again
16:00Just like as in previous matches
16:01He just couldn't keep with him anymore
16:03Lalas waits
16:05Can they put the cross onto his head?
16:07Yes
16:07Almost they did
16:08But it was a good interception
16:10By Romario Silva
16:11Just got there ahead of him
16:12Keep possession though
16:15Swung back in again
16:16And Lalas is still there
16:17The ball was going skywards
16:20As he got underneath the ball
16:22Rather than over it
16:23I like this player
16:25I just find him
16:27Everything you want
16:28Yeah
16:29He'd be disappointed
16:30In him and Tanya there
16:32The fireworks
16:33For Independence Day
16:35Will start early
16:36And it wasn't a bad one
16:42But
16:42Easily cleared
16:43And then
16:44The Brazilian defender
16:47Blocked the shot
16:48Quite unwittingly
16:49I think got it either
16:49In the chest or the face
16:51And he's lying injured
16:52Bad effort from
16:53The Americans here
16:56But now they're on defence again
16:57As we move into the final five minutes
16:59And that's
17:00A foul
17:01In very dubious circumstances
17:03Clavijo
17:06Will be a lucky man
17:07To escape punishment for that
17:08Red car
17:09He's got to get
17:10If it's Clavijo
17:10Yes
17:11Because he's had one before
17:12And he's off
17:13Clavijo
17:14Dismissed
17:15A second
17:16Yellow card offence
17:17Is how the referee saw it
17:19I would have thought
17:19The challenge in itself
17:20Might have deserved a red card
17:22Because it could be deemed
17:24A professional foul
17:25But it matters not
17:26He's dismissed anyway
17:28And Clavijo
17:29The oldest man
17:30In the United States squad
17:31The 37 year old
17:33Is dismissed
17:34And what a sad end
17:37To the World Cup experience
17:38For him
17:39But I think the referee
17:41Really had
17:41Once again
17:42No option
17:43He only had no option
17:49Because he's already
17:50Given him a yellow card
17:51I'm not sure
17:52I mean we haven't seen it
17:53Again in slow motion
17:53And I'm not doing
17:54I'm not in the best of days
17:55Of picking them up
17:56Having already thought
17:57That the full back
17:58Shouldn't have been sent off
17:59For Brazil
17:59When he possibly should
18:00But
18:01I mean that's
18:03Six yellow cards
18:05Two red cards
18:06And it's not been a
18:07Physical game
18:08That's the thing
18:09That
18:09Hold on
18:11Because there's a problem again
18:13But Dooley has dealt with it well
18:14For the United States
18:15I just wonder if the referees
18:20Aren't on a bit of a bonus
18:21For giving out yellow cards
18:23In this World Cup
18:24Well I think what has been said before
18:26Which is absolutely right
18:26Is that FIFA put them under
18:28Uncler pressure
18:28But here
18:29Go Brazil
18:30Trying to put the Americans
18:31Under legal pressure
18:32You know that
18:35Quite correctly
18:36Had one thought in his mind
18:38Then
18:38And was to clear it upfield
18:39As quickly as possible
18:40But
18:40I'm afraid
18:43Wijnaldum
18:44Couldn't reach it
18:45Brazil
18:47Have a throw in
18:48Which they'll take
18:49An age to take
18:50Three minutes
18:52Are left
18:52Now
18:53Here's the
18:55Red card incident
18:56It was a great run again
18:58By Romario
18:59He made a meal of that
18:59And I agree with you Kevin
19:00Harsh view
19:03Of challenges
19:04People no doubt
19:05Pat themselves on the back
19:06And say it's been
19:07An entertaining tournament
19:08There's been a lot more goals
19:09But I don't think
19:09Those bookings have been justified
19:11Here goes Romario
19:12Trying to clinch it now
19:13For Brazil
19:14This could be his goal
19:15Miola denies it
19:18In the last minute
19:21So America
19:27Still have faith
19:29Still have hope
19:30Still have a chance
19:31Of pushing this game
19:33Into half an hour's
19:34Extra time
19:35But we're in the final
19:3730 seconds
19:38Of the normal
19:4090 minutes
19:40As Miola
19:41Carries the ball
19:43Deep inside
19:44His own heart
19:45Go on wax it forward
19:46To Lalas
19:46Who has indeed
19:47Gone forward now
19:48Lalas challenging again
19:49With Marcio Santos
19:50The ball is played
19:51Into the Brazilian
19:52Panalty area
19:53And Caperell
19:54Seems to take an age
19:55To make up his mind
19:56To come out
19:56And claim that one
19:57But claim it he did
20:00And now we have moved
20:03Into stoppage time
20:05Brazil are close to the quarterfinals
20:08And close to another goal
20:09Perhaps here
20:10Good tackle
20:11What a good tackle
20:12By Balboa
20:13The two centre-halves
20:14Have done really well
20:15For the United States
20:16Today
20:17I think both defences
20:20Allen can give themselves
20:21A pat on the back
20:22And the Americans
20:23They've stood up
20:24They've been counted
20:25At the back
20:25Alright
20:26They've had numbers there
20:27Which always helps
20:28But give them credit
20:29They've defended against
20:30One of the most exciting
20:31Sides in the World Cup
20:33Despite the fact
20:33They haven't played
20:34That well today
20:35Even more so
20:38Have hardly
20:39Given them a chance
20:40In this second half
20:41Which when you consider
20:42A man short
20:43There's no mean performance
20:45Is it?
20:46Well
20:46The South Americans
20:47Might even be celebrating
20:49Along with Brazil
20:50Because
20:51It's been a great tournament
20:52For Europe so far
20:53This
20:54But Brazil had gone out
20:55Following Argentina's
20:56Dismissal yesterday
20:57It would have been
20:58A real setback
20:58For that continent
20:59But now Brazil
21:00Are surely going through
21:02Literally just
21:11Hasn't been able
21:11To make a telling
21:12Contribution
21:13In his
21:14Short time
21:15In the game
21:15And Brazil
21:19In possession again
21:19With Romário
21:20Giving it away
21:27Could that be
21:28A serious error
21:29I wonder
21:30America could have got
21:31Four players forward
21:32In this attack
21:33But it was a splendid
21:34Challenge
21:35By Eugenio
21:36To win it back
21:37And that's it
21:40It's the final whistle
21:41Brazil
21:42Brazil are through
21:43To the World Cup quarterfinals
21:46Celebrations
21:47The Samba rhythm
21:49Sounds
21:49All around
21:50The Stamford Stadium
21:51And the World Cup
21:53Favorites
21:54Have made it
21:55Into the last date
21:56America's World Cup
21:58Is over
21:58But they can be proud
22:00Of the way
22:01They've performed
22:02Today
22:02Miola
22:03And those players
22:04Won't be consoled
22:05By that fact
22:06There are tears
22:07On Independence Day
22:08For the American players
22:09But they
22:10Have taken their country
22:11Into a new era
22:12With their performance
22:13Here today
22:14The final score
22:16Brazil 1
22:18The United States 0
