NewsTranscript
00:00that Iran absolutely cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.
00:03He's been unequivocally clear about this for decades,
00:06not just as a presidential candidate, but also as a private citizen.
00:11In fact, I have some quotes for you.
00:12In 2011, President Trump said,
00:15America's primary goal with Iran must be to destroy its nuclear ambitions.
00:19We cannot allow this radical regime to acquire a nuclear weapon
00:22that they will either use or hand off to terrorists.
00:25In 2015, the president said,
00:27the problem is that Iran poses an existential threat to Israel,
00:31our Middle Eastern allies, and the United States.
00:33And of course, the president has repeated that in his first term as president
00:36and his second term as president as well.
00:38That's why he was adamantly opposed to the disastrous Iranian nuclear agreement
00:42that was implemented by President Obama.
00:45And it's why he has given great latitude
00:48and given a lot of effort to achieving a diplomatic solution.
00:51But he's been very clear.
00:53Iran went for 60 days when he gave them that 60-day warning without coming to the table.
00:59On day 61, Israel took action against Iran.
01:03And as I just told you from the president directly,
01:06he will make a decision within two weeks.
01:09Can I have a follow-up?
01:10Sure.
01:10Go ahead, Natalie.
01:11Thanks, Caroline.
01:12Can you confirm whether Steve Whitcoff has been in touch with the Iranian foreign minister?
01:16And does Whitcoff plan to go to Geneva tomorrow for talks?
01:19I am not tracking that on Mr. Whitcoff's travel schedule,
01:22but I can certainly check in with him to be sure.
01:24As for correspondence between the United States and the Iranians,
01:29I can confirm that correspondence has continued.
01:32As you know, we were engaged with six rounds of negotiations with them
01:35in both indirect and direct ways.
01:38Thanks, Caroline.
01:39Just to clarify the president's statement just now,
01:41when he says that he'll make a decision in the next two weeks,
01:44is he saying that if Iran does not come back to the negotiating table
01:48within the next two weeks, that the president will strike?
01:50The president is saying that he will make a decision
01:52whether or not to go within the next two weeks.
01:55It's very clear and direct.
01:56And is he seeing any signs of progress?
01:59He obviously is holding out hope for negotiations,
02:00but is he seeing any inklings of progress that give him that hope
02:04that talks are still possible?
02:06Well, that's why he said in the statement that I just read for all of you,
02:08based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations
02:11that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future,
02:15he will make that decision within the next two weeks.
02:17What makes him think there's still a substantial chance is my question?
02:20I'm not going to get into the reasoning and the rationale.
02:22The president believes that, but that's his position,
02:24and he will make a decision within the next two weeks.
02:26Caroline.
02:26Thanks, Caroline.
02:28President Trump has said previously in regard to Russia,
02:31he's used this phrase about two weeks several times in terms of, like,
02:36we expect, like, a two-week deadline, and then you give another two-week deadline.
02:39How can we be sure that he's going to stick to this one on making a decision on Iran?
02:43Well, in those deadlines, as you've seen in respect to Russia-Ukraine,
02:47might I add, these are two very different complicated global conflicts,
02:50as you know, that the president inherited from our previous incompetent president
02:55in the weakness of the previous administration.
02:57And the president has spent a tremendous amount of time and effort cleaning up these crises
03:01that were caused by the last administration's just complete dereliction of duty
03:06on the world stage and American weakness.
03:08Now we have American strength again.
03:09With respect to Russia and Ukraine, because of that American strength
03:13and the president's leadership, we have seen these two sides engage in direct negotiations.
03:18And the last time the president said two weeks,
03:20you saw Russia and Ukraine have direct negotiations for the first time in years.
03:24And so the president is always interested in a diplomatic solution to the problems
03:28and the global conflicts in this world.
03:30Again, he is a peacemaker-in-chief.
03:32He is the peace-through-strength president.
03:34And so if there's a chance for diplomacy, the president's always going to grab it.
03:37But he's not afraid to use strength as well, I will add.
03:40Francesca.
03:41Thanks, Caroline.
03:42What exactly would a deal with Iran need to entail?
03:46No enrichment of a uranium, and Iran is absolutely not able to achieve a nuclear weapon.
03:54The president has been very clear about that.
03:56And by the way, the deal that Special Envoy Whitcoff proposed to the Iranians
04:01was both realistic and acceptable within its terms.
04:04And that's why the president sent that deal to them.
04:08To follow up on what you told Natalie,
04:10are the talks that the United States is currently having with Iran direct,
04:14or are those through intermediaries?
04:17And if so, which countries are acting as the intermediary right now?
04:20Out of respect for the ongoing discussions and negotiations,
04:24I am not going to get into the details of them.
04:26We've provided you confirmation for now.
04:29Go ahead.
04:30Sure.
04:31And then behind you, too.
04:33Sorry, thanks.
04:34On the topic of negotiations and talks,
04:37does the president have any hopes or specific expectations
04:39for the talks tomorrow between European foreign secretaries
04:43and their Iranian counterpart?
04:45Well, certainly the entire world is on the president's side
04:48when it comes to the fact that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.
04:52This is something that pretty much all of humanity,
04:56except for the Iranian terrorist regime themselves, agree upon.
05:00And so the president expects that Europe will deliver that message directly to the Iranians.
05:07Why does President Trump believe that this 90-day extension on TikTok
05:11will provide more runway, perhaps, than the previous extensions
05:14that haven't led to a divestment deal?
05:16Because it's more time, more time to make a good deal.
05:19Simple question.
05:20Dasha?
05:20Thank you so much.
05:21I know things are going day by day right now.
05:24The president wants maximum optionality.
05:26Is the possibility of the U.S. getting involved in regime change in Iran
05:31at all on the table at this point?
05:32The president's top priority right now is ensuring that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon
05:38and providing peace and stability in the Middle East.
05:41And on Medicaid, Carolina, the Senate put forward Medicaid provisions,
05:45particularly a lower cap on state provider taxes
05:48that hospitals have said would lead to mass closures,
05:51particularly in rural communities.
05:53Is the president willing to sign a bill that includes those provisions
05:56that Republican senators like Josh Hawley say will lead to hospital closures?
06:00Out of respect for the ongoing discussions that the White House
06:03is very much actively involved in with our friends in the United States Senate,
06:08I won't comment on that specific provision.
06:10Look, the bill hasn't been sent to the president's desk yet.
06:13There's more room for change.
06:14The president, for one, I will reiterate,
06:16has been very clear on his priorities with respect to Medicaid.
06:20He wants to see waste, fraud, and abuse ridden from the system
06:24to protect it for taxpaying citizens who deserve those much-needed benefits.
06:29He wants to prioritize the sick, the needy, the poor in this country
06:34who deserve those benefits,
06:35not the 1.4 million illegal aliens who are receiving them.
06:39And he wants to make sure this one big, beautiful bill
06:41kicks those illegal aliens off of this program
06:44to preserve it and protect it and strengthen it for the American people.
06:48And the president has been very clear in that message
06:50to his friends in the Senate.
06:53Jackie.
06:53Thank you, Caroline.
06:54Sure.
06:55Logistically, if the Iranians are getting to Geneva,
06:58does that mean they've found a way to get to the White House?
07:00I am not going to get into hypotheticals,
07:02but as you heard from the president yesterday,
07:04they have expressed interest in doing so.
07:06There's a lot of pressure on the president
07:07to come to the aid of Israel.
07:11There's a lot of pressure on him to finish the job with force.
07:13How is he balancing the concern
07:16that if he doesn't choose to do that,
07:19that it would send a message to Xi Jinping
07:21about the U.S.' commitment to Taiwan?
07:23Well, the president enjoys a very respectful
07:26and cordial relationship with China's president.
07:30He has long maintained that, even in his first term.
07:33And China and the United States share many strategic interests,
07:37both in terms of economics and also, of course,
07:40global affairs and foreign policy as well.
07:43However, when it comes to balancing these different viewpoints,
07:47the president is balancing a lot of viewpoints.
07:49And he is listening, not just to other world leaders,
07:52but to his advisors and to people here in the country
07:55and the American people, too.
07:56And I think that's what makes this president such a great leader,
07:59is his ability to listen and make a good decision
08:03on behalf of the American public
08:05based on his instincts and his experience.
08:08Don't forget, this is a president who was here before,
08:11and the world was a much more peaceful and stable place
08:13when he left office than when he came back in
08:16after the past four years of complete incompetence
08:18by the previous president.
08:19Philip, go ahead.
08:20Thank you, Caroline.
08:21Two quick questions.
08:22When the president says Iran is very close to a nuclear weapon,
08:25is he relying on U.S. intelligence
08:27or intelligence sharing from an ally to make that assessment?
08:30It is a fact,
08:32and the United States government maintains this fact,
08:34that Iran has never been closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon.
08:38And then if the U.S. were to take some type of military action,
08:42would the president go to Congress to seek war authority?
08:48I'm not going to engage in hypotheticals.
08:50I gave you the statement from the president.
08:51He'll make a decision within two weeks.
08:53Thank you, Caroline.
08:53Sure. Go ahead.
08:54Thanks, Caroline.
08:55Mary and then Elizabeth.
08:56Two questions.
08:57One on Iran,
08:57and then the second on something Javlin Crockett said this morning.
09:00So given that we know the Iranian government
09:02did order an operative to assassinate the president,
09:05is there concern that Iran might respond with nontraditional military ways
09:11to some kind of strike on Iran,
09:13such as another assassination attempt?
09:15And has the Department of Justice looked into this last attempt
09:18on the president's life?
09:19I believe Secret Service and the FBI have looked into
09:22the two assassination attempts that took place against the president,
09:27both of which were sad days in our nation's history.
09:31So I would defer you to the Department of Justice
09:32on where those investigations stand.
09:34But as for your question regarding Iranian retaliation,
09:39I'm not going to engage in hypotheticals again,
09:42but I can assure the American public and the world
09:44that this administration is prepared and ready
09:47to defend American interests and assets,
09:50not just in the region, but here on our homeland as well.
09:53And then really quick on Jasmine Crockett.
09:54She said, I believe, that Trump supporters are mentally ill
09:58before calling for bipartisan support against the president.
10:01Can you respond to that,
10:02especially considering she's a rising star in the Democrat Party right now?
10:06She is a rising star.
10:07It's quite something to behold, actually.
10:09I hope that she continues to be a rising star,
10:12for the Republican Party at least.
10:14I think it's incredibly derogatory
10:17to accuse nearly 80 million Americans of mental illness.
10:21The last time I checked, Jasmine Crockett couldn't dream
10:23of winning such a majority of the public as President Trump did.
10:27And the America First movement, which President Trump has built,
10:30is filled of hardworking patriots, the forgotten men and women,
10:34business owners, law enforcement officers, nurses and teachers,
10:38and middle America, as we all know from where you all grew up,
10:43outside of this beltway.
10:44That's who makes up this president's movement.
10:46And Jasmine Crockett should go to a Trump rally sometime,
10:49and she can see it for herself.
10:51Jennifer.
10:51One on North Korea and one on China.
10:54On North Korea, they launched some rockets into the ocean today.
10:58What does the White House make of that?
10:59Do you read any meaning into that timing of that launch?
11:03And then on China, do you have any reaction
11:05to Xi Jinping's offer of intervening in Iran diplomatically?
11:11And are you seeing any signs that China would get involved militarily to support Iran?
11:16I don't believe we're seeing any signs of that at this moment in time.
11:19As for Xi Jinping's offer, I will leave it to the president to respond to that himself.
11:23As for your question about North Korea, we are monitoring the situation.
11:27The Trump administration is in close contact with our new South Korean counterparts
11:30as we work together to deter our adversaries
11:33and preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific.
11:36And no matter where, our adversaries and our allies alike
11:39know that President Trump will not tolerate threats
11:41against our interests on his watch,
11:43even as he works to resolve the wars that he inherited.
11:45I have a question.
11:46Alex, go ahead, and then I'll come to you.
11:48Is the president concerned about the economy
11:50if farms and hotels, et cetera, struggle to find workers?
11:54The president's always concerned about the economy.
11:56That's on his mind every day.
11:58He wakes up, he checks the markets, he checks wage growth.
12:01As I pointed out, it's a record high today
12:04for middle-class and American workers.
12:06So the president's always wanting to ensure
12:08that we have a strong and robust economy
12:10for the American people and worker, and we do.
12:13As for the specific concerns regarding jobs,
12:16look, the president has made it very clear,
12:18we need to remove public safety threats
12:20from the interior of our country.
12:21And that remains the focus and the priority of this administration
12:24when it comes to deportations.
12:25No matter where somebody works, if they're an illegal alien rapist
12:29or murderer that was allowed into this country
12:31in the past four years by this administration,
12:33the American people want those types of criminals
12:36to be deported from our country.
12:38And that's what the president is backing ICE to do.
12:40Thanks.
12:42There was an appearance.
12:43Okay, Andrew Kraft here now in the anchor chair.
12:48You've been listening there to Caroline Levitt,
12:50the White House Press Secretary, at the briefing today.
12:53We're going to step out of this.
12:54I'm Andrew Kraft.
12:55Like I said, we do have to squeeze in our final commercial break
12:58of this hour on this extremely busy Thursday.
13:02A lot of news made in that very press briefing,
13:05especially and including on the potential conflict
13:10between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
13:14We heard there from Caroline Levitt
13:15that the president needs a little more time,
13:18about two weeks, to make his ultimate decision
13:22on whether or not the United States will assist
13:24in striking targets inside of Iran.
13:27So that's really the biggest news of the day.
13:29But there's a lot of other top headlines.
13:31We'll get to them.
13:32I'll be in the anchor chair here for the next three hours.
13:35So a thank you to my colleague, Andy Mack,
13:36for guiding you through the last two hours.
13:39So let's take that break.
13:40We'll see you in just two minutes.
13:41We'll see you in just two minutes.
14:11We'll see you in just two minutes.
14:41We'll see you in just two minutes.
15:11We'll see you in just two minutes.
15:41And welcome back here to Live Now from Fox.
15:51I'm Andrew Kraft.
15:52So just to give you a sense,
15:54this is what we're watching going into the next hour,
15:57a live picture there in Galveston, Texas.
16:01So as you know,
16:02because you've been probably watching it all day,
16:04it's Juneteenth, of course.
16:05You know Juneteenth celebrates the end officially of slavery in the United States.
16:11It commemorates June 19th, 1865,
16:15when Union soldiers, led by Union General Gordon Granger,
16:19brought the news of freedom to enslave black people in Galveston, Texas,
16:24two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
16:30And so we're waiting for former President Joe Biden to address the occasion and the holiday
16:37there at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Galveston.
16:42Galveston, of course, is the key locus of why we celebrate Juneteenth.
16:48Of course, Juneteenth became a federal holiday during the Biden administration.
16:55And so we're about to hear from the former president there on this occasion.
16:59We also have a live picture, I believe, outside the church.
17:02Outside.
17:02We just spoke with Fox 26 Houston's Sherman DeSalle, the reporter.
17:07And you can see so many lined up outside the historic church there.
17:13So stay tuned for that.
17:15In the meantime, though, we do have lots to get to.
17:17Let's get back to the most pressing story of the day.
17:21And that, of course, is what we heard from Caroline Leavitt at the White House press briefing today,
17:26reading out a statement from the president saying that he needs more time
17:30to ultimately decide whether or not to hit targets inside Iran with U.S. assets.
17:37He says the decision on that will come within two weeks.
17:41Fox News correspondent Trey Yinks with more.
17:47White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt had a message directly from President Trump Thursday
17:52as he continues to weigh U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict.
17:56If there's a chance for diplomacy, the president's always going to grab it.
17:59But he's not afraid to use strength.
18:00So far, Israel has launched dozens of strikes against Iranian nuclear and military sites.
18:05But they've not yet been able to hit the Fordow nuclear facility, which sits hundreds of feet underground.
18:10That was put there so that it could not easily be subject to aerial bombardment.
18:16The U.S. could use its powerful bunker buster bombs to take out the facility.
18:20But those can only be dropped by Air Force B-2 bombers flown by American pilots.
18:24And feelings about taking that step are mixed.
18:27Look, I want to see someone finish the job, whether it's Israel, whether it's the United States of America.
18:32The idea that one strike is going to be adequate, I think, is a misconception.
18:38Experts say there are alternatives to a U.S. strike.
18:41They're just not as good.
18:42Israel can certainly conduct a ground raid, you know, secure the facility and then blow it up.
18:48There's a lot of risk associated with that.
18:50Meanwhile, Israeli officials say they'll step up attacks against Iran after a missile barrage Thursday hit several civilian targets, including a hospital.
18:59We're targeting military sites.
19:01We're targeting nuclear sites.
19:02They're targeting civilians because they're a criminal regime.
19:05President Trump says he'll make a decision within the next two weeks about whether or not to get directly involved in the Israel-Iran conflict.
19:12In Tel Aviv, Trey Yankst, Fox News.
19:14Trey, thanks so much.
19:17We do have a live picture there over the skyline of Tel Aviv.
19:20Take a look at that.
19:21That's a live picture.
19:22So this is more of the remarks, the full remarks from Caroline Levitt, the White House press secretary, echoing a statement made by President Trump with this timeline decision here.
19:34Let's listen.
19:36Regarding the ongoing situation in Iran, I know there has been a lot of speculation amongst all of you in the media regarding the president's decision making
19:43and whether or not the United States will be directly involved.
19:47In light of that news, I have a message directly from the president, and I quote,
19:52Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future,
19:59I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks.
20:04That's a quote directly from the president for all of you today.
20:07All right.
20:08That was Caroline Levitt there with a statement from the president.
20:10And so Jennifer Griffin on the X saying this, that the president will decide before July 4th whether to strike Iran.
20:17The White House spokesperson says the president will decide whether to strike Iran's underground nuclear facility at Fordow within two weeks,
20:24given ongoing negotiations two weeks from today is July 3rd here.
20:29So let's talk about all of this and more with our colleague and friend there, national security analyst and expert and retired marine intelligence officer.
20:37Hal Kempfer, he joins me.
20:39Hal, thanks for being with us yet again.
20:41You've been just an invaluable resource as we try to make sense of yet another and now new conflict in the Middle East,
20:48this one between Israel and Iran here.
20:50I have to ask you this, Hal.
20:52If the president and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli leader, has said that they want this to be a limited engagement of the operations going on inside Iran,
21:04Operation Rising Lion, why does the president, why does Trump want to take two more weeks to make a decision here?
21:12Does that kind of underscore or belie the immediacy of all of this?
21:18Why not make a decision sooner rather than later?
21:21In the last 48 hours, you were on with us.
21:24The immediacy of the answer to that question had been reported.
21:29Remember, the Wall Street Journal had that scoop yesterday saying that the president had already made up his mind.
21:34Why two more weeks?
21:35Is he giving Iran more time to come to the table to figure this out?
21:40If so, why?
21:42Well, Andrew, there could be not complete inconsistency, if you will,
21:47but it could be the president has reviewed all the different courses of action of what the U.S. could do in this situation.
21:53And he has approved a plan that we could execute, probably involving the B-2s and the GBU-57,
22:02those massive ordnance penetrators, going after the Fordo site.
22:06That's probably what he may have improved.
22:08Probably.
22:09We don't know for sure.
22:10But the other side, too, is there could be intelligence.
22:13You know, there's reports that the foreign minister of Iran may be going to Turkey this weekend.
22:18There might be an option to come up with some sort of negotiated settlement.
22:24You know, there is certainly a maximum pressure campaign, if you will, on Iran to do things that they just don't want to do,
22:31which is to give up that enrichment capability altogether.
22:34And so maybe they're seeing some, you know, some indications that maybe the regime is willing to budge on that, that they're willing to change it.
22:44You know, the president came out and said he wants unconditional surrender.
22:47That's a pretty strong term of surrender, if you will, publicly saying that.
22:52But, you know, certainly there's a, from where we are now to unconditional surrender, there's a lot of space in there.
22:58So maybe he's trying to do that.
23:00The other thing, too, and I'll just throw this out there because it is true, is that it's within two weeks.
23:07That, you know, historically, we have seen things happen, you know, when we have a deadline that can happen before the end of that two-week deadline.
23:16So it's within two weeks.
23:18It's possible, you know, if circumstances dictate that he could go ahead and do that.
23:22He's also, we're moving forces into the theater, so he needs a little bit more time to put more, another carrier task force in there.
23:28There's a lot of other considerations that go into this.
23:31And, sideline, is that possibly Israel has another option that they're working on and they're trying to see how things roll out on the ground.
23:43So, Hal, though, with Iran being the bad actor in the region that it is, I think a lot of people are scratching their heads.
23:50Why give Iran two weeks to come to their senses, to figure things out?
23:55I thought we were mere weeks away from a nuclear bomb, from proliferation here.
24:02So, two weeks is a lot of time, to your point.
24:05It is absolutely a lot of time.
24:08I will, I'm going to assume, keep in mind, there's a lot of information, intelligence, if you will, they look at that we don't see.
24:15Okay.
24:15That they decide that two weeks is a reasonable amount of time, that there's not going to be a bomb that's developed or fielded that they could possibly use within that two-week period.
24:24And there is a lot that goes into making a nuclear device.
24:29I mean, it's not just enriching the uranium.
24:32It's, you know, you have to actually create the ball, if you will, that's used to put into the warhead and then fixing the warhead.
24:39So, anyway, long story short, probably that could not happen within two weeks.
24:43So, it gives them a little bit of time.
24:45Also, they may be gathering more intelligence on the Fordow site.
24:48You know, the GBU-57, that bomb, was designed with Fordow and some other sites in mind, those deep bunker things in mind.
24:58So, yes, it's very capable.
25:00But, unclassified, I'm not sure what the classified stuff is, but unclassified, it says it goes down to 200 feet and then explodes.
25:07Well, the Fordow bunkers or the Fordow cavities, as I understand, are actually deeper than that, about 300 feet.
25:13The kinetic energy should be enough to collapse those things, but I have to say, from a target intelligence standpoint,
25:20I'd be wanting to do a lot of validation and verification that we're hitting the exact right location,
25:25that we're hitting with enough ordinance to destroy the facility.
25:30And, of course, they're also going to look at another thing, which is the possibility of radioactive contamination,
25:36which, as we know, should be localized, but I'm sure they're going back and double and triple checking that as well.
25:42Okay, so, Hal, there was a report today in The Guardian, citing officials anonymously,
25:49saying that, you know, the president and those around him are doubting the efficacy of the bunker buster bombs themselves,
25:58saying, essentially, that they're not sure if it can achieve what they want militarily with taking out,
26:05or at least taking offline, Iran's crown jewel of their nuclear program, the Fordow facility here.
26:11Jackie Heinrich kind of tracked this down, Fox's White House correspondent,
26:15and the White House is denying this in her reporting.
26:18She reports this, that a White House official tells her the contents of The Guardian report are false,
26:24that the U.S. military has no doubt about the efficacy of bunker busters in eliminating the site at Fordow.
26:30The Guardian report says,
