00:00If your news feed looks like a spy novel, you're not imagining things.
00:04India just landed on Canada's official list of foreign meddlers.
00:08Here's how we got here.
00:10According to a new report from CSIS, Canada's top spy agency,
00:15India is now officially listed alongside China, Russia and Iran as a perpetrator of foreign interference.
00:21The agency says Indian officials and their proxies in Canada tried to influence Canadian politics,
00:27especially around the Sikh separatist Khalistan movement.
00:31CSIS also linked the Indian government to the 2023 killing of Sikh leader Hadeep Singh Nijal in British Columbia,
00:39calling it a significant escalation of transnational repression.
00:43Despite this, Prime Ministers Carney and Modi just agreed to restore diplomatic ties,
00:48even as legal proceedings for Nijal's murder continue.
00:51Canada has responded by enacting tough new laws,
00:54giving CSIS more power and setting up a foreign agent registry.
00:59Bottom line, even allies can cross lines.
01:02For Canada, protecting democracy means holding everyone, friends included, accountable.
