00:00:00Aeons is about first love, but it's also a meditation on queer
00:00:29culture, it's about Ireland, it's about our past and our present, it's about, ugh, fuck off, that's fucking shit.
00:00:45I wanted to write about first love. I wanted to write about something that young readers could
00:00:53connect with in a way that was familiar and raw and heartfelt, that would validate their
00:01:04feelings.
00:01:06That's awful, don't tell that. The book is about. I think the book is about.
00:01:23We hope you're keeping well, Alma. We're getting all these scientists all ready
00:01:30for this lot. It takes us a bit longer, we're doing to you here, cracking the whiff.
00:01:34The lads are always asking after you, and where is Alma's bolognate? That's all we hear every
00:01:39day. More than there has been here some of the day.
00:01:42I hear the candy for you last week, up in St. Francis.
00:01:45Power. And... social structure. And... I'm coming! Social structure. And then with endless
00:01:56uptext of the story, we're also exploring issues of post-colonial conflicts in Ireland, the
00:02:01legacy of the Catholic Church, and the growth of a queer culture within a regressive society.
00:02:05Okay! Okay! Alright! Alright! Jesus Christ, I'm gonna throw that bell away! I heard you the
00:02:12first time. Morning. What? Oh my God, the face. Okay. I don't know, we got a lovely lilac number,
00:02:26some peachy peach, or the most gorgeous hue of aquamarine you ever have seen. If this is not
00:02:31to your satisfaction, we could, I don't know, go miss Scarlet and take a sewing machine to the
00:02:34curtain. The blue, of course, it's the blue. Yeah. Alright. Alright, here we go. Ready? One, two, three.
00:02:49Now, just give him his patience, patience. Okay. That's much better.
00:03:03Good morning, Edward. Oh my God. She speaks. Finally. Welcome to the land of the
00:03:05world.
00:03:06Good morning, Edward. Oh my God. She speaks. Finally. Welcome to the land of the world.
00:03:10If you listen to this show, you know how important a good night's sleep is to both myself and...
00:03:2630 seconds, Edward. That's why we use float mattresses...
00:03:42Be confident. Ma'am.
00:03:45...and get 20% off any bed in their deluxe range. All across Chicago, this is KW 107 FM...
00:03:52Stop looking at me. Our next guest is the Irish novelist Edward Brady, whose debut novel
00:03:59Eons explores a complex friendship and gay relationship between two young men. Sorry.
00:04:06Edward, thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Great. So, your novel was first published
00:04:14in 2018 in Ireland and the UK, I believe. But it's only now being picked up internationally.
00:04:20And all caused a sudden surge in young readers who discovered the novel through TikTok.
00:04:24Yeah, I know it's crazy, but that's how it happened.
00:04:27It's a beautiful read, Edward, I have to say. Now, tell us about Kian and where we find him
00:04:33at the start of the story.
00:04:34Um, well, he's sort of an awkward, unformed teenager when we meet him.
00:04:39He's trapped in a small Irish town, struggling with his identity, and then he meets a sort of
00:04:43mercurial English boy, and we follow the relationship over the next 10 years. So, it's a love story
00:04:47about these two young gay men, but it's also an out-of-love story. And then there's those
00:04:50things thematically. Uh...
00:04:53Slow down, Edward.
00:04:57Hello?
00:04:58They will not be able to understand. You talk fast.
00:05:03Please try and be slower. They are American and your oxen will confuse them.
00:05:07Edward, are you still with us?
00:05:09Edward, if you were going any slower, we would go back in time.
00:05:19Please don't start.
00:05:23Mom, what? Oh, why do you keep pointing at every turn? I know where we're going.
00:05:27Okay, I've been driving there for a year.
00:05:30What? We're not gonna be lazy.
00:05:32Please...
00:05:35No, no.
00:05:36Please!
00:05:38That's crazy.
00:05:40Please!
00:05:42This feels like it's a long way.
00:05:45This feels it...
00:05:48When begins, listening and learning, this feels like it's a play,
00:05:53It begins this kind of thing,
00:05:56The feelings like,
00:05:57Laughing. Breaking down. And healing.
00:06:02The physio says if she doesn't start getting some exercise, she'll be in a chair in six months.
00:06:06She won't fucking listen. Talking to the wall, could it be?
00:06:09All she wants to do is smoke fags and watch telly.
00:06:12She'd be flat destroyed.
00:06:15I had the guards over with me on Tuesday.
00:06:17Why?
00:06:18Because my one keeps turning up a week for people she doesn't even know.
00:06:22One of the families reported her to the guards.
00:06:24They thought she was in robbing a dead man's watch.
00:06:26What was she doing?
00:06:28Trying to put fucking rosary beads into the casky.
00:06:31Why?
00:06:32I don't know.
00:06:33She thinks she's doing the Lord's work, I suppose.
00:06:38Look out there, Simon.
00:06:40Tia's map passed.
00:06:41She did.
00:06:42I think it got rough at the end.
00:06:44Jesus Christ, he looks wrecked.
00:06:48Hi.
00:06:50I can't end up looking like that.
00:06:52Certainly not with all that's been spent on Botox.
00:06:54Don't be telling people me business.
00:06:56Eh, chicken.
00:06:57He's not blind.
00:07:00Gorge.
00:07:01Is it?
00:07:02Years younger.
00:07:03Thanks, Edward.
00:07:04I still think you're one lip filler away from ending up like Nicky Rourke in The Wrestler.
00:07:08Will you stop being such a cunty fuck, please?
00:07:10I'm not.
00:07:11No, you are.
00:07:12What's wrong with you?
00:07:13Eh?
00:07:14This?
00:07:15I can't take it anymore.
00:07:25It's the guys in Masperromus.
00:07:27Hola, chicas.
00:07:28We're sending you a message to say hi to you and Les Madras.
00:07:31Say hi to the boys.
00:07:33We miss you guys.
00:07:35We wish you were here and we'll see you all really, really soon.
00:07:38We'll find that.
00:07:40That used to be us.
00:07:50You ready? Two wheels.
00:07:52You ready?
00:07:53You ready?
00:07:54You ready?
00:08:05You ready?
00:08:06You ready?
00:08:07Daddy.
00:08:09France Eboyd Ten
00:08:13The publishers are talking about doing this, doing a big release for the book in America.
00:08:27You know, they think the reviews are going to be good and it has a shot.
00:08:33They've asked me to go over there for a book tour.
00:08:36Are you going to do it?
00:08:43What? How can I?
00:08:45Okay.
00:08:46Who am I supposed to leave mam with for two weeks?
00:08:48I can think of a number of people.
00:08:50Two weeks is nothing.
00:08:51Two weeks is not nothing for an 81-year-old woman recovering from a stroke.
00:08:54I can't just dump her with anyone.
00:08:55Well, you could...
00:08:56No, don't say residential care.
00:08:57Okay, fine.
00:08:58I'm not going to argue with you about that again.
00:09:00Good.
00:09:01Look, Edward.
00:09:01I know how difficult it is to be in a codependent relationship with a demanding woman.
00:09:05I mean, when I think about my situation with Audrey and all of this...
00:09:08Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
00:09:09Are you actually going to try and segue into that again?
00:09:11It's not the same thing.
00:09:12I came out when I was 17.
00:09:13I am simply trying to draw a parallel between you, you know, avoiding your destiny as an artist,
00:09:18and me avoiding my destiny as an out-gay man.
00:09:21Oh, God.
00:09:23Right, no need to be so dramatic.
00:09:24Can we just focus on me today?
00:09:26Of course.
00:09:29It's not professional.
00:09:30Oh, even though you haven't paid me in five years.
00:09:35I'm also interested at the moment in writing about Ireland's Generation X,
00:09:40the Generation X imaginary.
00:09:42And also, this is around the time, I suppose,
00:09:44the band of black book is being written,
00:09:46which is...
00:09:46I'm also interested at the moment in writing about Ireland's Generation X,
00:09:51the Generation X imaginary.
00:09:53I don't know, like a ring in the ears.
00:10:10It's probably stress headaches.
00:10:11Edward gets them, don't you?
00:10:12Hello?
00:10:15He's not listening to you.
00:10:17Too busy staring at Raph for the last 20 minutes.
00:10:20Here, I need Netflix recommendations for Jean.
00:10:23Has she seen Unorthodox?
00:10:25She only likes stuff with loads of killing in it.
00:10:27Uh, Dexter.
00:10:28She's seen it.
00:10:29Love, hey.
00:10:29Seen it.
00:10:29Has she seen Cain?
00:10:30Yeah.
00:10:31Gangs of London.
00:10:32All right, Jesus, sorry I asked.
00:10:33What the fuck's wrong with you?
00:10:35I'm just overwhelmed, like, sorry.
00:10:37You need to start standing up for yourself, doesn't he?
00:10:41It gets easier.
00:10:44When?
00:10:47Okay, I'm ending this conversation now.
00:10:49See ya.
00:10:51Wait, I didn't get to tell you about my Grindr chat.
00:10:53Bye.
00:11:07Wake up.
00:11:19She's ready for bed.
00:11:22Thanks.
00:11:24When are the reviews coming?
00:11:25I don't know.
00:11:26I don't know.
00:11:27Tomorrow, maybe.
00:11:27Exciting.
00:11:29It'll be grand.
00:11:32So, how's things with you?
00:11:34Good.
00:11:34We found an apartment in Uberkampf that we can afford.
00:11:39Wow, that's great.
00:11:41I know.
00:11:42How's Richard, is he excited?
00:11:44Ridiculously excited.
00:11:47Sometimes it's so exhausting, you know?
00:11:49Always wants to be doing things.
00:11:51Hiking, walking.
00:11:53I hate that.
00:11:54I'm like chicken.
00:11:56I just got in from work.
00:11:57All I want to do is go to bed and watch Netflix.
00:11:59I always liked this.
00:12:06Like what?
00:12:08Quiet.
00:12:09Dull.
00:12:10Well, you certainly weren't quiet when I first met you.
00:12:14You were pretty insufferable with memories.
00:12:17Was I?
00:12:18It weren't.
00:12:19You fucking loved the sound of your own voice.
00:12:21See you later.
00:12:31Bye.
00:12:36Oh my God, you're driving me crazy.
00:12:38Edward, it's my job to know how to handle these things.
00:12:42I mean, they're disappointed.
00:12:43You're the writer and they want you out there.
00:12:45But they understand your situation with Alma.
00:12:48They say what any of the events were.
00:12:50Um, are you sure you want to know?
00:12:52Go on, I know what you're dying to tell me.
00:12:54Okay, well, I can't remember all of them.
00:12:56But I know there was talk of, uh, John Green hosting a Q&A with you at Powell's in Portland.
00:13:03Fuck off.
00:13:05Mm-hmm, you asked?
00:13:06Okay, I'm going to forward the time to review to you, um, as soon as it lands.
00:13:10Just remember, whichever way it goes, it is a hit with the people that you wrote it for.
00:13:15Alright, night-night.
00:13:18Later.
00:13:20Oh, look at that.
00:13:28That's an improvement.
00:13:30I think we've found my vocation.
00:13:33Look at these girls.
00:13:34You know, I was thinking that, uh, it might be quite nice to go and see Andrew and the girls in London, wouldn't it?
00:13:50I mean, you know, you haven't seen them for ages.
00:13:52The girls are getting big.
00:13:53They'd love to see you.
00:13:54So, I was thinking that I could take you over there, and then you could stay with him for a few weeks.
00:14:00It's too hard.
00:14:08It's not too hard, ma'am.
00:14:09Andrew can manage.
00:14:10Okay, and I'll show him exactly how you like everything done, and we can go through everything with him before we go.
00:14:15Too much for him with the new baby.
00:14:17Why don't you come and stay too?
00:14:33We could have a nice holiday there.
00:14:35Well, it's not really a holiday for me, is it?
00:14:40Why?
00:14:41Because, well, okay, because what if I want to go out and meet a nice man?
00:14:44Can't do that with all you's around, can I?
00:14:46I'm destined to be single forever.
00:14:51You can meet a nice man on your phone anytime.
00:14:55Well, I can meet a nice man on my phone anytime.
00:14:57Right, and where would I bring him?
00:15:00Why would I bring him here?
00:15:02Well, to meet you.
00:15:03Okay.
00:15:04Well, that's not going to work.
00:15:05It'd probably scare him away with your beady eyes.
00:15:09Okay.
00:15:12One, two, three.
00:15:13And now for the jerk chicken mario, perfect for the barbecue.
00:15:29The food of our mario is the allspice.
00:15:31It's got a pint of cinnamon flow and a bit of nutmeg.
00:15:36Let's go to the mario.
00:15:37It's going to be like two times for the food.
00:15:39Bye.
00:15:39It's going to be covered.
00:15:43We begin with a vivid description of a 17-year-old Cain's debilitating social.
00:15:58Brady's prose are beautifully old-fashioned and acerbic.
00:16:01He manages to evoke the spirit of Faulkner.
00:16:03With eons, Mr. Brady is speaking to young people about something deeply personal and real.
00:16:07And I can see why young readers are devoted to it.
00:16:13They've called you and it's like, oh, do you know, are they always young bloke there?
00:16:34Edward?
00:16:37Hi.
00:16:37Katie?
00:16:39Want to follow me?
00:16:39Do you want to talk about your mum, Alma?
00:16:42Yeah. So, for a really short-term stay, it'll be like two weeks at most.
00:16:47Of course, of course.
00:16:48Um...
00:16:49I'm sure you want to be at home with her yourself, but you have to live too.
00:16:53Look, why don't you start a conversation with mum and we'll see where we go from there.
00:17:01Are you okay?
00:17:07Edward?
00:17:10Yeah, um...
00:17:13So, if I were to...
00:17:14I'm so sorry, I'm feeling like I can't breathe or something.
00:17:17Okay, well, just take it nice and easy.
00:17:19I just feel a bit dizzy or something.
00:17:20You want to maybe have a seat?
00:17:21Yeah, if I could have a seat.
00:17:22Guys, can I get some assistance in the long corridor, please?
00:17:24Maybe a glass of water as well?
00:17:25I actually feel kind of pain from sitting as bad. It feels like...
00:17:29Maybe...
00:17:30Edward, maybe?
00:17:32Constance was named the third-inch man in the Irish Citizen Army...
00:17:35Hmm.
00:17:36Let's get this.
00:17:37Hey Siri, stop!
00:17:39Edward!
00:17:40I told the publishers I'd do the book tour and now I'm parked outside Hamilton Lodge and I just had a full-on panic attack in front of the manager.
00:17:47I don't think I can do this.
00:17:48Just stay on course.
00:17:50Well, I'm sorry, you should see this place.
00:17:52It's cold and sterile and everything smells like bleach.
00:17:55Edward!
00:17:56Idiot!
00:17:57You've been looking after other people for five years.
00:17:59I mean, first your father and now Alma.
00:18:02Repeat after me.
00:18:03I'm going to stop taking care of other people and start taking care of myself.
00:18:09I'm going to stop taking care of other people and start taking care of myself.
00:18:13Good.
00:18:14Now, go home and have a talk with Alma.
00:18:16Goodbye.
00:18:18What is wrong with you?
00:18:20Um, please, it's only a short-term stay for a couple of weeks.
00:18:31I promise when it's finished we're going on a long holiday together.
00:18:35Maybe we can visit Andrew and the kids in London or hire a car and go driving down the south of France.
00:18:42I know you're always saying you wanted to do that.
00:18:45Well, now we can.
00:18:46Open top, wind in our hair.
00:18:48Just me and you.
00:18:53Hey, ma'am.
00:18:55I've got the sourdough and I've got the brie that you like.
00:18:58And I've got some really exciting news.
00:19:01There's a couple of things we have to talk about first but I don't want you to freak out.
00:19:05Like I take this whole rail.
00:19:06Yeah.
00:19:07But that's how we need help.
00:19:08It's a little bit of you, isn't it?
00:19:09It's a little bit of me, alright.
00:19:10Explain everything.
00:19:11And what it was like, what do you think?
00:19:13Well, I'm going to say it straight off.
00:19:14You didn't get a call in the street from the street.
00:19:16Hello?
00:19:17Hello?
00:19:18Hello?
00:19:19Hello?
00:19:20Hello?
00:19:21Hello?
00:19:22Hello?
00:19:23Hello?
00:19:24Hello?
00:19:25Hello?
00:19:26Hello?
00:19:27Hello?
00:19:28Hello?
00:19:29Hello?
00:19:30Hello?
00:19:31Hello?
00:19:32Hello?
00:19:33Hello?
00:19:34Hello?
00:19:35Hello?
00:19:36Hello?
00:19:37Hi Edward.
00:19:38It's Colm.
00:19:39I'm Billy.
00:19:40We've hit rock bottom, pal.
00:19:42There's no easy way to say this, so we're just going to say it.
00:19:45We've decided to run away to Maspaloma's pride for three days and leave our mams with you.
00:19:50We know what we're doing is abominable, but we just can't cope anymore.
00:19:55Sure, on the outside, we always look like we have it together, but on the inside, we're
00:20:00a mess.
00:20:01It's the monotony.
00:20:02It's the monotony, Edward.
00:20:04If we don't get away, honestly, we might die.
00:20:11All we're asking for is three nights.
00:20:14Just give them a bed and keep them fed and watered.
00:20:16That's it.
00:20:17We know we're the worst.
00:20:20We hope you can forgive us.
00:20:23Sorry.
00:20:24This is the universe taking a shit on me because I was about to do something really selfish.
00:20:30This is your friends taking a shit on you because you're an obliger.
00:20:35Huh.
00:20:36Just put your foot down and say no.
00:20:39They're already in a plane to Gran Canaria.
00:20:41I mean, who does that?
00:20:42Who abandons their mothers to go to fucking Maspaloma's pride, of all things?
00:20:46You know what?
00:20:47It's my own fault for staying friends with them.
00:20:48They let me down all the time and I just keep letting it go and thinking it's a one-off.
00:20:52I don't know why I seem to want to keep making the same mistake with people and expecting
00:20:57a different outcome.
00:20:58It's the fucking definition of madness.
00:20:59From all over the world, we travel to be one.
00:21:02Hello?
00:21:03Nothing's changed, Edward.
00:21:06Just stay focused on talk dash.
00:21:08I'm preparing for the book tour.
00:21:10I don't know.
00:21:11I think the book tour's a bad idea now.
00:21:12Stop.
00:21:13Focus.
00:21:14This is your future.
00:21:16Bye.
00:21:20To find adventure.
00:21:23To find pride.
00:21:27Come and join the adventure.
00:21:33This could only happen to you.
00:21:36Thanks.
00:21:38Look, I can be here on the tour.
00:21:41I don't want your day off.
00:21:43What about Richard?
00:21:44You won't mind.
00:21:45You can pay me double.
00:21:48Okay.
00:21:50I'm out of here.
00:21:51And call me if you need anything.
00:21:53Okay, okay, bye.
00:21:54I'm out of here tomorrow.
00:21:55I'm out of here tomorrow.
00:21:57So the trick is as well, you know, I had this conversation all the time by twice about length.
00:22:03The trick is, if a long dress is between two to short to frame, go for left fabric and more fitted
00:22:10points.
00:22:11This is what we do.
00:22:13Hi, ladies.
00:22:15Sorry.
00:22:18So, I'm Edward.
00:22:21This is my mom, Alma, that you know from mass.
00:22:24Here.
00:22:26It's only small.
00:22:28My son rushed me out of the shop before I could find anything.
00:22:31Oh, that's a lasagna.
00:22:32That's very kind.
00:22:33There's a cheesecake in there as well.
00:22:35Okay, maybe we could have the cheesecake with our tea.
00:22:37I fast on a Wednesday.
00:22:39Oh.
00:22:40It's too much.
00:22:41They have to go.
00:22:42No.
00:22:43We're just going to have some tea and then we can all just...
00:22:47Hey.
00:22:51Hi.
00:22:53Where are we?
00:22:54Thought you can adjust the kind of thing.
00:22:56Yeah, things like that.
00:22:57My son, I love you.
00:22:58I hear you.
00:22:59I love you.
00:23:00I love you.
00:23:01One of them has mobility problems.
00:23:02And they're the one who suffers with their nerves.
00:23:04Rosie suffers with their nerves.
00:23:05No.
00:23:06Please, Edward.
00:23:07You've already got three.
00:23:08One more is not going to make a difference.
00:23:09Shh.
00:23:10Shh.
00:23:11They're listening to us.
00:23:12They're listening to us.
00:23:13They'll just go into the kitchen.
00:23:16Ten minutes ago you would call me an obliger.
00:23:17I know.
00:23:18I'm saying no, sorry.
00:23:19Please, Edward.
00:23:20No.
00:23:21I am a 53-year-old gay man with an ex-wife and a family who despise me.
00:23:25I'm living with my mother.
00:23:26You know the only time we ever get messages on Grindr?
00:23:28Is if I use a naked picture of my torso and the username Daddy.
00:23:31Spelled D-A-D-D-I.
00:23:32Look, I think that you're looking at all the wrong places.
00:23:34If I go on a date, I spend the whole time looking over my shoulder terrified that somebody from my own life is going to see me.
00:23:41This is a chance for me to meet other men like me.
00:23:44Dermot, you are not going to meet men like you at Mass Paloma's Pride.
00:23:47Trust me.
00:23:48Please, Edward.
00:23:49I need this.
00:23:58Don't worry about that.
00:23:59It pops right open.
00:24:00All of her clothes are in the roll away.
00:24:01And I put her iPad in there, too.
00:24:02Because, you know, she's never off the bloody thing.
00:24:04And all of her meals are in the Tupperware.
00:24:06No dairy.
00:24:07No gluten.
00:24:08No red meat.
00:24:09Excuse me.
00:24:10Can I get that back?
00:24:11Now, all the medication is written down here, but it's pretty straightforward.
00:24:13And that really is just about everything.
00:24:15Oh, she might fight you back on the food.
00:24:16But if she does, just hold for her.
00:24:18And, you know, don't worry.
00:24:19She's an absolute dote.
00:24:21You're going to love her.
00:24:24Okay.
00:24:25Let's go.
00:24:39Edward.
00:24:42Edward.
00:24:46Edward.
00:24:49Edward.
00:24:55Edward.
00:24:56I need you, please.
00:24:57Okay, blankets.
00:25:00No.
00:25:03Ma'am.
00:25:04You have got to stop.
00:25:06I want my pillows.
00:25:07Well, they need pillows, too.
00:25:09Ma'am, we take those pillows off your bed every night and stack them on that chair.
00:25:12And now, is the man putting kids on my bed?
00:25:15Could you just give me one second, Ma'am, okay?
00:25:17My son has abandoned me with strangers.
00:25:22Everything okay in here, Jean?
00:25:24That mattress is very hard.
00:25:25Okay.
00:25:26Well, I can swap you up with Ma'am if you want.
00:25:27The mattress is most softer than the spare room.
00:25:28I know.
00:25:29Apparently, I need minding now.
00:25:31He says he's worried about my vertigo.
00:25:38Well, I don't know.
00:25:40Is it clean?
00:25:42It...
00:25:43Yes.
00:25:44Yes, it's clean.
00:25:46You're all right.
00:25:47Stay where I am.
00:25:48I have no idea who they are.
00:25:49All I know.
00:25:50They're crammed into his little house like sardines.
00:25:54Edward, you are being a doormat.
00:25:58You have no wife, Edward.
00:26:00No.
00:26:01Oh, sure.
00:26:02I play for the same team as your, Billy.
00:26:03Oh.
00:26:08Can I get a sup of water in that?
00:26:09Yeah, of course.
00:26:10Of course.
00:26:11Edward Brady.
00:26:12Just give me one minute, Ma'am.
00:26:14Please.
00:26:16Oh, yeah.
00:26:17Water.
00:26:18Water.
00:26:20I'm sorry.
00:26:22I'm so sorry.
00:26:24Can I get your water in a couple of minutes.
00:26:27Edward.
00:26:28Do you need any blankets or…?
00:26:29Edward, I need your feet.
00:26:30You poor man.
00:26:31Actually, can I take that pillow back?
00:26:35No.
00:26:36Excuse me.
00:26:37Say hello to Amir.
00:26:38Hi, Edward.
00:26:39Hello.
00:26:40Hello, Amir.
00:26:41Edward.
00:26:42That's it. I'm going now, my love.
00:26:45My son told me you're a novelist.
00:26:48I downloaded your next book onto my Kindle.
00:26:50I'm about to start it.
00:26:51Oh, I hope you like it.
00:26:52Hey, Siri, play Eons by Edward Brady.
00:26:56Edward.
00:26:58Playing Eons by Edward Brady.
00:27:02Kean castigated himself silently,
00:27:03took giant slugs of the poisonous blue alchopoppy
00:27:06held onto for dear life.
00:27:08You were never cool.
00:27:10Not like these kids.
00:27:11I want my pillows.
00:27:14I'm just going to take that pillow back
00:27:15and I'll be back in two seconds, okay?
00:27:17Thank you, Maude.
00:27:17Thank you, Maude.
00:27:18That is absolutely outrageous.
00:27:22Look, we're going to have to make this work, okay?
00:27:26Ma'am.
00:27:27Ma'am.
00:27:28Can I get my water, please?
00:27:32I'm going to have to bring a sleeping bag in here.
00:27:35Is that okay?
00:27:37Well, where am I going to sleep?
00:27:41Standing by, Edward.
00:27:50Joining me all the way from Ireland
00:27:52is YA novelist Edward Brady
00:27:54here to talk about his new book, Eons,
00:27:57which is releasing here in the States.
00:27:58It's already out in Ireland.
00:27:59Thank you so much for joining us.
00:28:00How are you doing?
00:28:01Oh, thanks for having me.
00:28:03I'm in a car.
00:28:04I'm sorry.
00:28:05I'm in a car.
00:28:06It's a long story.
00:28:08You know what?
00:28:09That's all good.
00:28:10So let's talk about Eons.
00:28:11It's a love story about two young men.
00:28:14Yeah, yeah, that's right.
00:28:15And it charts their relationship
00:28:16over the next 10 years,
00:28:18you know, the sort of highs and lows.
00:28:19And it's, you know, it is a love story,
00:28:25but it's also not a love story.
00:28:27It's an out-of-love story.
00:28:29And I don't know if that makes sense,
00:28:31but it's...
00:28:32Because so much of the story is then...
00:28:33I think the characters, they...
00:28:34Sorry?
00:28:35No, go ahead.
00:28:36Go ahead.
00:28:39Yeah, they got...
00:28:40I think, you know, it's more than a love story.
00:28:42It's about social structure and identity
00:28:45and, you know, just what it must be like
00:28:48to be trapped inside a depressed country,
00:28:53you know, that was once colonized.
00:28:56Okay, well, that's great.
00:28:58Edward Brady, thanks so much
00:28:59for joining us on the show.
00:29:00Listen, thank you.
00:29:01Thank you so much for having me.
00:29:03Okay.
00:29:04Bye-bye.
00:29:14Good morning, St. Paul's Orthopedic.
00:29:18Hi, can I speak to Raphael Dumont, please?
00:29:20He's our physio.
00:29:21One moment.
00:29:22Hey, help.
00:29:23Help, you've got to help me.
00:29:24They've all got appointments this morning
00:29:25and I've got no way to travel them there.
00:29:28All right, I can't, I can't.
00:29:30There's five of us.
00:29:31We won't fit in their car with, you know,
00:29:32with the wheelchair.
00:29:34Hal, what happened?
00:29:35Can I walk, please?
00:29:36Ralph, just see if you can get the bus.
00:29:43It's fine.
00:29:44It's fine.
00:29:44Ladies, may I present to you Lady Alma Von Brady?
00:29:48Man wants to put on her Sunday best fur.
00:29:56That's okay.
00:29:59Who's hungry?
00:30:00Me.
00:30:01Good.
00:30:01Do you want to join us, Jean?
00:30:03No.
00:30:04I just thought it might be nice if we all lay together.
00:30:14Is it the N or the O that's confusing?
00:30:19Will your son make us breakfast?
00:30:24We'll not have time.
00:30:25He has a lot of work today.
00:30:32He is a writer.
00:30:36What does your son do?
00:30:37Well, he's a psychotherapist.
00:30:39Her son is one of his clients.
00:30:44Why does your son need therapy?
00:30:46For fuck's sakes.
00:30:52Do you need a hand or...
00:30:54Okay.
00:31:01Okay, breakfast.
00:31:02How does omelette with spinach and feta cheese sound?
00:31:07No?
00:31:08Cornflakes will do me.
00:31:10Oh, I don't think we have those.
00:31:11The certified house doesn't have cereal.
00:31:13Could you go to the shops?
00:31:14Um, I can...
00:31:15Okay, sure.
00:31:16Too far.
00:31:17No, no, ma'am.
00:31:18It's 60 seconds away.
00:31:19Does anyone else need anything?
00:31:20I'd like sausages.
00:31:22Okay.
00:31:22A scone, please.
00:31:23Okay, sausages, scone...
00:31:25Give him money.
00:31:26Ma'am, ma'am.
00:31:27No, I can manage.
00:31:32I can...
00:31:32Okay.
00:31:37Oh, it's two minutes away.
00:31:38Don't worry about it.
00:31:38Just two minutes away.
00:31:44Yeah, what happened?
00:31:49So I think, like, we've seen changes in many species in their populations and, say, the
00:31:54barnodes, the barnodes very much prefer to farmland.
00:31:56So when we look, you know, just thinking of changes in our countryside, you know, lots of
00:32:01hedgerows, even changes to own the farm buildings where barnodes would have, you know, they're
00:32:06very much as they're in the right place where they're associated with the barnodes with
00:32:10the farm, the next day, the barnodes would have to be in the right place.
00:32:20Hey, uh, give me a call.
00:32:23The meeting is set for 12.
00:32:24I've sent you a link.
00:32:25Also, like, have you spoken to Alma yet?
00:32:27Because, uh, we...
00:32:29Okay, let's get this breakfast going.
00:32:42Um, and then maybe after breakfast that you and I could talk about, um, you know, something...
00:32:46I am hungry.
00:32:47Uh, something that might be happening that's really exciting with my work.
00:32:51So, if we could get a chance to talk about it.
00:32:53Okay, okay, Jesus Christ.
00:32:54Okay.
00:32:59I need to talk to you about this thing that might happen.
00:33:08And it's...
00:33:09It's only an idea now, so don't freak out.
00:33:13Why are you in therapy?
00:33:14What?
00:33:19Who told you I was in therapy?
00:33:22I don't know, ma'am.
00:33:22Okay, I'm a writer.
00:33:24I'm neurotic.
00:33:27Were you abused?
00:33:28No.
00:33:31No, I wasn't abused.
00:33:33Jesus.
00:33:37Are you depressed?
00:33:38No, I'm not depressed.
00:33:41Hello?
00:33:42Is the man bringing me to mass?
00:33:49I am sick of them.
00:33:50I want to go to bed.
00:33:52What are you talking about?
00:33:53You just got up.
00:33:58You're right.
00:34:01They are a nightmare.
00:34:04So greedy.
00:34:06And rude.
00:34:07Mm-hmm.
00:34:07Maybe we should just tell them to go home.
00:34:10And just let them fend for themselves.
00:34:12We can do it together.
00:34:20Mm-hmm.
00:34:22Okay.
00:34:23Okay.
00:34:23Well, if that's what you think.
00:34:24Hi, Edward.
00:34:30No process of behaving himself.
00:34:32Guess what?
00:34:36Stop, guys.
00:34:36I'm the airplane.
00:34:38You'll be very proud of me.
00:34:40I'll be later.
00:34:40Look at this.
00:34:51What are you doing now?
00:34:52Look at this.
00:34:53Oh, my God.
00:34:54Bye.
00:34:58Okay.
00:34:58We drop Maud off at the funeral first.
00:35:00And then me and Jean go to the hospital.
00:35:02Then we drop Rosie off at her book club.
00:35:04Raph brings Mom to her hair appointment.
00:35:06And then I can get back in time for my work call.
00:35:08Okay?
00:35:08Sound good to everyone?
00:35:10Well, Raph can bring you.
00:35:12Okay?
00:35:13I can't drive the bus.
00:35:14And someone's got to go with Jean.
00:35:15So, okay, fine.
00:35:16Fine, okay.
00:35:16We drop Maud off at the funeral first.
00:35:18Then we all go and wait with Jean at the hospital.
00:35:20And then I can bring Mom to her hair appointment.
00:35:23Happy?
00:35:23Okay, that's what we'll do.
00:35:25That's what we'll do.
00:35:26Okay?
00:35:26Change of plan.
00:35:27That can just go away.
00:35:29Hi, Edward.
00:35:31Drive time.
00:35:34Edward, I need to talk to you about something that's coming up with the publishers.
00:35:38They have listened back to radio interviews and they're concerned with how you're coming across.
00:35:42You need to stop talking about social structures and colonization
00:35:46because no teenager is going to buy this book based on subtext.
00:35:50Edward, don't laugh.
00:35:51See, I met these really nice guys from Ghent.
00:35:55Like these bears.
00:35:57You know, like hairy gay men.
00:36:00They're super nice.
00:36:01And they invite me to go clubbing tonight.
00:36:02They can't get this to wear.
00:36:03But do you think this is appropriate?
00:36:06I feel stupid.
00:36:07I feel sexy.
00:36:09Okay, mind to step.
00:36:12Mind to step.
00:36:27For fuck's sake.
00:36:28I don't know what you said.
00:36:29I'll let you go meet with me for.
00:36:31I'm not an invalid.
00:36:33How do I stop it?
00:36:34Just.
00:36:38There you go.
00:36:40It's my boyfriend, Amir.
00:36:43You'll think I've run off with someone else now.
00:36:45He's the jealous type.
00:36:46Nice.
00:36:48I found it impossible to have a relationship with an Irish man.
00:36:50Yeah, me too.
00:36:52Irish men are so frustrating.
00:36:54In one minute they're all over you and the next day, they've gone.
00:36:59I've been there.
00:37:01Do you have a significant other?
00:37:02I have a boyfriend, Richard.
00:37:06Richard.
00:37:06He's Dutch.
00:37:07Oh.
00:37:09I have lots of gay friends.
00:37:11Two of my best friends, Tim and Ian, they have an antiques business.
00:37:15I remember walking into their shop in Harold's Cross 20 years ago and saying,
00:37:19Do you know where I could find a puff?
00:37:22And Tim opened his arms wide and said, Darling, will this puff do?
00:37:27Sweet Jesus.
00:37:30Jane.
00:37:31Why, why?
00:37:54Jane.
00:37:55Jane.
00:37:57Jane, I want you to stand, not holding on to the bar for two minutes.
00:38:01It's only two minutes and the bar is right there if you need it.
00:38:04Okay?
00:38:08Okay.
00:38:09Okay.
00:38:24Good.
00:38:24And then relax, okay?
00:38:35Jane, we both know what's needed here.
00:38:38Think about the amount of freedom a worker would give you.
00:38:41Not having to rely on other people.
00:38:43Jane.
00:38:43Jane.
00:38:49Jane.
00:38:58Do you need a hand, Jane?
00:38:59No.
00:39:04I just excuse for you one moment.
00:39:06I'll just check these empties with me.
00:39:09Check these empties with me.
00:39:10I think so much.
00:39:11I know she's...
00:39:12Are you okay for everything, Carl?
00:39:18Thank you very much.
00:39:19Are you okay, Nadine?
00:39:25There's nothing I can do.
00:39:26Oh, I'm okay.
00:39:30Hey.
00:39:31Hey, Maud.
00:39:32Hey.
00:39:32You ready to go?
00:39:33Oh.
00:39:34Dry these.
00:39:35Just harm me.
00:39:36What?
00:39:36I can't.
00:39:37No, Maud.
00:39:38Just wait a minute.
00:39:42Sorry.
00:39:43Who is that woman?
00:39:46Maud?
00:39:49Was she a friend of my granddad's?
00:39:51Excuse me.
00:39:58Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for sinners now and the hour for death of men.
00:40:02Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost.
00:40:05As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be word, but I round the men.
00:40:09And God bless you.
00:40:11You've been very good.
00:40:12Off we have to go.
00:40:12This is Edward.
00:40:14Hello.
00:40:15Hi.
00:40:15Betty Bird.
00:40:16Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:40:21I know.
00:40:25I'm so sorry.
00:40:26I'm so sorry.
00:40:27My publishers are calling me, so I have to go.
00:40:29Come on.
00:40:31I'm so sorry.
00:40:32I have to go.
00:40:33Stacey, I really can't talk now.
00:40:34I'm in the middle of something.
00:40:35Okay.
00:40:36Don't freak out.
00:40:37The meeting's being pushed and we've got a bit of a problem.
00:40:42Look, they sent me a list of things they want you to consider, so brace yourself.
00:40:47Number one, they think your synopsis is way too long.
00:40:49Number two, they think your voices can't believe they want you to be quick.
00:40:53Number four, you're promoting a gay novel at a time when they're burning LGBT books in
00:40:58this country.
00:40:58Remember, your readers are sophisticated.
00:41:00Edward, you can't cope.
00:41:02Ma'am, please, please stop, please.
00:41:04I'm sorry to cause you trouble.
00:41:06No, it's that you didn't, Maude.
00:41:07It's fine.
00:41:07It's totally fine.
00:41:08Who was your meeting supposed to be with?
00:41:11Um, my publicist.
00:41:12It's about promoting my book in America.
00:41:15He is very important writer, but gets so nervous before his meetings.
00:41:19Why do you get nervous?
00:41:20I don't.
00:41:21I don't get nervous.
00:41:22You should get Dermot to prescribe some anti-anxiety medication.
00:41:26Dermot.
00:41:26His therapist, my son.
00:41:28I don't need anti-anxiety medication.
00:41:31Well, I take a half cheeky if I'm flying anywhere and it's not a bother on me then.
00:41:36Well, I mean, I get that because if you don't like flying, but I don't need anti-anxiety medication.
00:41:40It's just I don't like having meetings, which is completely normal.
00:41:43Why?
00:41:44Because I don't like talking to people.
00:41:47That's...
00:41:47I like being on my own.
00:41:49Weird.
00:41:49It's not...
00:41:50It's not weird, Ma'am.
00:41:52What was his father like?
00:41:54Weird.
00:41:55Ma'am!
00:41:57You are just like your dad.
00:41:59I am not...
00:41:59Do not compare me to Dad right now, please!
00:42:03The very same.
00:42:04I can't help.
00:42:09Jesus, this fucking therapy must be going too well.
00:42:17Now you have all made him mad, and I didn't get my hair done.
00:42:21None of us asked to be here in the first place, you know.
00:42:53That's the food that Dermot gave me for you.
00:42:58Okay.
00:43:04Nationalism, this free state is not the state they wanted.
00:43:08This is not the state that they have called for.
00:43:10In many ways, the state that came into being...
00:43:16See how your hand is square with long fingers?
00:43:21In palmistry, this is what we call an air hand.
00:43:24Air people were known for being very thoughtful and considerate.
00:43:29Very generous with other people.
00:43:32Very sociable.
00:43:33Always making others feel welcome and at ease.
00:43:40Should we see if anyone else wants a hand massage?
00:43:56Well, the brown palm is usually an indication of a creative person.
00:44:00Well, I've always been a very creative person.
00:44:04I love making art.
00:44:06Yeah?
00:44:06What kind of like?
00:44:07All sorts.
00:44:08I did a course recently and...
00:44:09Well, what's it called?
00:44:14Painting?
00:44:15No.
00:44:16Drawing?
00:44:17No.
00:44:19Oh, it'll come back to me.
00:44:21Do me.
00:44:22Okay.
00:44:23I had a fall last year and I ended up with a torn rotator cuff.
00:44:29Oh, no.
00:44:30You poor thing.
00:44:31What did the shape of her hand say?
00:44:33Oh, okay.
00:44:34Let's see.
00:44:35Oh, um, this tells us that she's a woman of great faith.
00:44:41Ah.
00:44:41See all of these little small lines here?
00:44:44These are all of your guardian angels.
00:44:46See how many of them you have.
00:44:48Oh.
00:44:48I can feel them with me.
00:44:51Hmm.
00:44:52Ceramics.
00:44:53Ceramics.
00:44:54That's what it was.
00:44:56Nothing bad now, do you hear me?
00:44:58Hmm?
00:45:00This is usually a sign of a joyous life right here.
00:45:04That's fucking wrong anyway.
00:45:07Do you fight with people, Jean?
00:45:10Hmm.
00:45:11I fight with everyone.
00:45:13Fight with myself if there's no one else around.
00:45:15Things would have been easier when Larry was around.
00:45:19He was good at making me see sense.
00:45:23Hmm.
00:45:25How old?
00:45:27How old am I?
00:45:29How old was Larry?
00:45:3169.
00:45:32He was only a pub.
00:45:34Hmm.
00:45:36When did your husband die, Alma?
00:45:40Two years.
00:45:45Just lay there.
00:45:49He's gorgeous, Jean.
00:45:50Oh.
00:45:50Lovely.
00:45:53That's Nigel.
00:46:00Michael.
00:46:02Hmm.
00:46:03Oh.
00:46:06You would love to see them walking through the door,
00:46:09asking for their dinner.
00:46:10You said them spoiled.
00:46:15Oh, no.
00:46:16They did their part.
00:46:18They did.
00:46:18They still got away with murder, though.
00:46:20At least the one in this house did.
00:46:21My mum waited on him hand and foot for 40 years.
00:46:24Yeah, but they worked very hard,
00:46:25and it was different times.
00:46:28So, you sport hard, too.
00:46:30Well, that's true.
00:46:31So, why should you not have been given the same opportunities that they were?
00:46:34Well, I never married.
00:46:36Never had to cook a meal for a man in my life.
00:46:38See?
00:46:39And what, you still managed to make a good life for you and Dermot on your own?
00:46:41Oh, it wasn't a good life, Edward.
00:46:44Right.
00:46:45She needed a man.
00:46:46She didn't need a man, ma'am.
00:46:48Maybe I did.
00:46:50I was very lonely.
00:46:51Well, now, look, you've got a mirror.
00:46:54Yeah, that's true.
00:46:56Of course, we've never met.
00:46:57How did that work?
00:46:58Well, we talk on the computer every day.
00:47:00What's the point of that?
00:47:02It's a company, I suppose.
00:47:04He wants to come over and pay a visit, but I don't know.
00:47:06Well, why complicate things with sex?
00:47:10Jesus, why complicate things with sex given half a chance?
00:47:15Oh, my God.
00:47:24I honestly don't think it's that big a deal, Edward.
00:47:26Writers do this type of thing all the time.
00:47:29So, just be yourself and charm them and we'll get on.
00:47:32Hey.
00:47:32Are you okay?
00:47:39They want me to do, uh, um,
00:47:41sit in front of a marketing team tomorrow
00:47:42and do a mock Q&A on Zoom.
00:47:45Why?
00:47:45Because apparently my voice needs to be more persuasive in interviews.
00:47:49And that's...
00:47:50It's not funny.
00:47:50It's not funny.
00:47:51My stalks are not just thinking about it.
00:47:53I'm not up for it.
00:47:54I'm not...
00:47:54You're such a drama queen.
00:47:56Fuck you.
00:47:57Fuck you.
00:47:57These American pricks hate my voice.
00:47:59Come on.
00:47:59You'll be fine.
00:48:00There she goes.
00:48:08Okay.
00:48:14You're okay?
00:48:14I'm sorry.
00:48:42Sorry.
00:48:44I mean...
00:48:45I don't, I don't...
00:48:56I'm careful.
00:49:07I'll just go.
00:49:17Hello and welcome to The Galleys, a podcast from Vulture.
00:49:26Tonight we'll be talking to Irish novelist Edward Brady about his debut novel, Eon.
00:49:30Edward, thanks for being with us.
00:49:33Oh, thanks for having me.
00:49:35Edward.
00:49:36Oh my God.
00:49:37Oh my God.
00:49:38Oh my God.
00:49:49Jane.
00:49:51Jane!
00:49:53Jane!
00:49:54What the fuck is going on?
00:50:23Can you tell me where you dropped her off?
00:50:30The driver was saying that he dropped her off at Mulligan.
00:50:32Okay.
00:50:33A small red ring placed up on the side of Garvey.
00:50:35Okay, Copper Road.
00:50:36Okay.
00:50:36Yeah, no problem, Woody.
00:50:38Here I go out to sea again.
00:50:52The sunshine fills the air.
00:50:58There's music everywhere.
00:51:05Gold's in the sky, and in my blue eyes.
00:51:11No, it feels unfair.
00:51:14Look at me standing here on my own again.
00:51:32Up straight in the sunshine.
00:51:40No need.
00:51:42Jane, my legs are stuck.
00:51:58Hey, what's up man?
00:52:10Where's your step there?
00:52:12Where's your step?
00:52:14Okay, not so quiet.
00:52:16No, close it up. Yeah, close it, but quietly.
00:52:18Quietly.
00:52:20That's a chain!
00:52:22That's not quiet.
00:52:24Sure.
00:52:26Oh, here we are.
00:52:30No, it's grand, grand.
00:52:34A second now.
00:52:36See?
00:52:38Okay.
00:52:40Goodnight.
00:52:42Who says if I came home,
00:52:44I wouldn't have to drink on me own,
00:52:46so sit down. It's late, Jean.
00:52:48Who cares? Sit down.
00:52:56Drink.
00:53:06I suppose I really needed myself in that place, did I?
00:53:10No, I don't think so.
00:53:12I'm sure there was no one there anyway.
00:53:14Hmm.
00:53:16I wasn't even going there to begin with.
00:53:18And where were you going?
00:53:20I was going into town to fuck that walker in the Liffey.
00:53:26I just need to give it a chance, you know,
00:53:28just take some time to get used to.
00:53:30Does it?
00:53:32In all your experience of using a walker,
00:53:36it takes a bit of time to get used to,
00:53:38does it?
00:53:40Sorry.
00:53:42Well,
00:53:44he warned me.
00:53:46He said if I didn't start moving,
00:53:48it would be like this forever.
00:53:50Well,
00:53:52I didn't listen.
00:53:54So,
00:53:56here we are.
00:54:00Your man misses him something shocking,
00:54:02doesn't she?
00:54:03I suppose.
00:54:04Ah, she does.
00:54:08Yeah, well, I don't know why.
00:54:10They used to kill each other.
00:54:11She always seems to forget that part.
00:54:13She used to bollock the head off, Larry.
00:54:15You'd hear me bawling him over it all over the estate.
00:54:18That's just the way it was in them days.
00:54:20There was a few crosswords.
00:54:23So what?
00:54:25Didn't do us any harm, did it?
00:54:29Mm-hmm.
00:54:30Well,
00:54:31I wouldn't say we escaped unscathed, Jean.
00:54:34I mean,
00:54:35you know, we're all in therapy.
00:54:37We're broke, confused, homeless,
00:54:41crippled with anxiety
00:54:44and incapable of sustaining any kind of meaningful relationship
00:54:47with another person, so...
00:54:49How the fuck was all that our fault?
00:54:51I'm just saying, you know,
00:54:52it can be distressing, you know,
00:54:53especially if you're a kid
00:54:54and your parents are fighting all the time.
00:54:55And then if one parent keeps telling you
00:54:56all the details of the fight, you know,
00:54:57when you're ten,
00:54:58because they don't have anyone else to talk to about it.
00:54:59And then you add to all of that all of the crazy, regressive, religious bullshit that you keep throwing at us.
00:55:05And it's like, you know, maybe we're grand in our twenties, but then one day you're in your thirties and you wake up and you are scared.
00:55:12You know, it's...
00:55:13You know, it's...
00:55:14You don't know why.
00:55:15You don't know why.
00:55:16You don't know why.
00:55:23You don't know why.
00:55:30You don't know why.
00:55:31You don't know why.
00:55:37You don't know why.
00:55:39You don't know why.
00:55:40Here.
00:55:49You think you guys are not here,
00:55:53but now...
00:55:54somebody stuck a coin in here.
00:55:56I thought someone had stuck a coin in you there.
00:55:59Oh, come on.
00:56:01One way down.
00:56:06What's that?
00:56:08Ah, ladies.
00:56:11You're up there with that.
00:56:13We're having our song.
00:56:15Goodnight, Jean.
00:56:19Where are you going with the camera now?
00:56:21Ah, look, I'm trying to listen to the news.
00:56:23Ah, go on.
00:56:24Hello, Chloe and Leila.
00:56:26I hope you've been very good for your mother and father.
00:56:29Not one.
00:56:30Granddad is just full of chat this morning, girls.
00:56:54I will ask the spirit for a name.
00:56:55Spirit will tell me who they are and how they passed.
00:57:00And all I ask of you is that if you recognise that name, you validate what I am saying.
00:57:06She's very good, isn't she?
00:57:07All right.
00:57:08Mm-hmm.
00:57:09Spirit, do you have a name for us today?
00:57:10Yes.
00:57:11I will ask the spirit for a name.
00:57:13I will ask the spirit for a name.
00:57:15Spirit will tell me who they are and how they passed.
00:57:17And all I ask of you is that if you recognise that name, you validate what I am saying.
00:57:19She's very good, isn't she?
00:57:20All right.
00:57:21Mm-hmm.
00:57:22Spirit, do you have a name for us today?
00:57:23Edward, they are asking me to confirm your flight on itinerary.
00:57:24OK.
00:57:25OK.
00:57:26Hey.
00:57:27I need to talk to you in private for a minute.
00:57:29Want to go to Galbraith?
00:57:30That's what I am saying.
00:57:32I just want my partner.
00:57:33The word that's in my office is so unaltered that you are.
00:57:37She's very good, isn't she?
00:57:38All right?
00:57:39Mm-hmm.
00:57:40Spirit, do you have a name for us today?
00:57:41Edward, they are asking me to confirm your flight on itinerary.
00:57:45They...
00:57:46Oh, okay.
00:57:47Hey.
00:57:49I need to talk to you in private for a minute.
00:57:53Want to go to Galway.
00:57:57What?
00:57:58Want to see more of the medium.
00:58:00Ma'am, ma'am, what are you talking about?
00:58:03Galway.
00:58:07Medium.
00:58:09Your mommy was showing us these videos of more of the medium
00:58:12and Rosie was saying we should find out if she did in-person mediation.
00:58:18Anyway, we sent her a message on Facebook and to cut a long story short,
00:58:22she's booked us in for a session at four o'clock today.
00:58:27We just want to know that they're at peace.
00:58:30Who?
00:58:30Your daddy.
00:58:31And Nigel.
00:58:32And Larry.
00:58:33I just fancy the idea of a road trip.
00:58:35We are absolutely not going on a six-hour round trip to Galway, okay?
00:58:53I have a really important call with my publishers at five-
00:58:56Bring your computer.
00:58:57Bring my computer?
00:58:58Are you for real?
00:58:59I have to be here.
00:59:00What if there's no Wi-Fi?
00:59:02Be fine.
00:59:02Oh, be fine.
00:59:03Be fine.
00:59:04Be fine.
00:59:04No, be fine.
00:59:05Okay, you've certainly changed your tune.
00:59:06We're not going to Galway.
00:59:07Sorry.
00:59:08And I have to speak to you about something urgent.
00:59:14Ma'am?
00:59:15I want to be where the boys are.
00:59:36I want to be where the boys are.
00:59:44But I'm not allowed.
00:59:49On the other side of the boys bar.
00:59:53I wish them to all come out.
00:59:57Try it.
01:00:11I found your booth on Amazon, Edward.
01:00:13Oh, look, there's reviews here.
01:00:15Will I read them out?
01:00:16No, thank you.
01:00:17This fella gave me five stars.
01:00:19Says, it's a wonderful novel.
01:00:21The characters are very human.
01:00:23Oh, hang on.
01:00:24There's a bad one.
01:00:25Can't see where all the fuss is about.
01:00:27Which he knows.
01:00:28Not one to be handed out unless it's to the charity shop.
01:00:32You can stop now.
01:00:33Starts well, but goes nowhere.
01:00:34I put it down after 50 pages.
01:00:35How the fuck does he know it goes nowhere then?
01:00:37She stopped you.
01:00:38You're my agent.
01:00:39You need to buy me some more time.
01:00:40I'm in the middle of...
01:00:41What's Edward's book about?
01:00:42I have been trying to tell her for two days now.
01:00:43It's about a relationship between two young gay men.
01:00:44One is a teenager from Leitrim.
01:00:45The other is a 22 year old posh boy from London.
01:00:46That sounds good, doesn't it?
01:00:47It may have been cheap, but we're gays.
01:00:48I'm just at the bit where the main character takes his mother to the Gresham Hotel for tea.
01:00:52So he can tell that he's gay.
01:00:53I thought what Edward did with you, Elmer.
01:00:55Edward's coming up was very fun.
01:00:56Right, what happened?
01:00:57When Edward was 17, he snuck out.
01:00:58He snuck out.
01:00:59He snuck out.
01:01:00It's about a relationship between two young gay men.
01:01:01It's about a relationship between two young gay men.
01:01:02One is a teenager from Leitrim.
01:01:03The other is a 22-year-old posh boy from London.
01:01:04That sounds good, doesn't it?
01:01:05It may have been cheap, but we're gays.
01:01:06I'm just at the bit where the main character takes his mother to the Gresham Hotel for tea,
01:01:09so he can tell he's gay.
01:01:10I thought what Edward did with you, Elmer.
01:01:11Coming up was very fun.
01:01:12Right, what happened?
01:01:13When Edward was 17, he snuck out to a gay bar and got off with this air steward.
01:01:22Sven.
01:01:23Sven.
01:01:24Sven from Sweden.
01:01:25He was much older.
01:01:26He wasn't that much older, Alma.
01:01:30Um, whatever.
01:01:32So, one weekend, Edward lied and told Alma he was staying with a friend, but actually,
01:01:37he flew to Sweden to stay with Sven.
01:01:39Oh, I mean, when he was just 17.
01:01:41I know, he was such a badass back then, right?
01:01:43So, you can just imagine 17-year-old Edward hanging out in Sven's fancy apartment when
01:01:51all of a sudden, the phone rings and somebody's on the line.
01:01:55I said, is my son there?
01:01:57How did you know where he was?
01:01:59Traced the number.
01:02:00She traced the number.
01:02:02The problem would have been about 22, I'd say.
01:02:08And he would have been very moody at that age, always on his own.
01:02:12And then suddenly he had this friend, Adrian, and he used to drive up to the house in a
01:02:17red beamer and he'd wrinkle him off to the pictures.
01:02:20And one day they were driving off.
01:02:22And I says to Larry, I think your man's a bit more than a friend.
01:02:26It's a laugh.
01:02:29My youngest, Nicola, kept saying, he's gay, mummy.
01:02:35He's gay.
01:02:37I says, I don't want to know.
01:02:39I really don't want to know.
01:02:41Then it all came to a head one night because a chap Nicola was working with saw Billy dancing in a bar.
01:02:47So he was summoned home and confronted on it.
01:02:51No, not by me.
01:02:52I couldn't hack it.
01:02:53I ran upstairs and locked myself in the bathroom and wouldn't come out.
01:02:57What did you do that for?
01:02:59I just found it very hard.
01:03:02I still do.
01:03:04Would you prefer he kept it a secret until he was 53 and married with kids?
01:03:10Exactly.
01:03:18Edward, your phone.
01:03:19Will I answer it?
01:03:20Oh, yes, please.
01:03:21Hi, Edward.
01:03:22It's Katie here from Hamilton Lodge Residential Care.
01:03:25I'm actually driving at the minute, so can I call you back?
01:03:30Yeah, okay.
01:03:31All right.
01:03:33Bye-bye, bye-bye.
01:03:37Did that go in there?
01:03:38All right.
01:04:03Okay.
01:04:04Everyone ready?
01:04:08Well, hello.
01:04:09You're most welcome.
01:04:10Hello.
01:04:11Come in, come in.
01:04:12You can hang your jacket club at the hall if you like.
01:04:13Oh, thank you.
01:04:14Oh, thank you.
01:04:15Oh, thank you.
01:04:16Oh, thank you.
01:04:18Oh, thank you.
01:04:19Oh, thank you.
01:04:20Oh, thank you.
01:04:21Oh, thank you.
01:04:22Oh, thank you.
01:04:24Oh, thank you.
01:04:25Oh, thank you.
01:04:26Oh, thank you.
01:04:27Oh, thank you.
01:04:28Oh, thank you.
01:04:29oof.
01:04:30Oh, thank you.
01:04:31Oh.
01:04:32Jesus!
01:04:33Oh, thank you.
01:04:34Jesus Christ.
01:04:53Panket!
01:04:54Would you ever do something about them pigeons?
01:04:59Little bastards are nesting above in the draining pipes.
01:05:02Right, I'm going to do a Star 3 card spread,
01:05:06and then I'll put a call out and see who comes in to us.
01:05:09Now, just so yous know, the messages they have
01:05:12might not mean anything in the here and now.
01:05:15Oftentimes, it's when yous go home and reflect
01:05:18that whatever they say starts to make sense.
01:05:21Alright?
01:05:32The lovers.
01:05:43Betrayal.
01:05:47The Hermit.
01:05:53Oh.
01:05:55It's going to be a bumpy ride.
01:05:58Okay.
01:06:08Okay.
01:06:09One of them is very giddy.
01:06:14Keeps telling me jokes.
01:06:16It's Larry.
01:06:18Right.
01:06:19And there's another lad very offended by Larry's jokes.
01:06:25Nigel.
01:06:27Yes.
01:06:28And now there's a third gentleman who's not a bit pleased to be here.
01:06:35Says his wife Alma should know better than wasting money on the likes of me.
01:06:41Is that familiar?
01:06:45Michael.
01:06:46Fond of giving out this fellow, is he?
01:06:50Still asking what in the name of Jesus you're doing here?
01:06:54I just want to know that he is at peace.
01:07:00He's very much at peace.
01:07:04But he misses you terribly.
01:07:07I had a stroke, Michael.
01:07:10And I lost my voice.
01:07:12He says he can hear you just fine.
01:07:15Edward is putting me in a home.
01:07:18Ma'am.
01:07:27That is not true.
01:07:30That is not.
01:07:31Can we just talk about this later?
01:07:33The publishers wanted me to go to America for a book tour for ten days.
01:07:49Okay?
01:07:50So I just went to go and take a look at a place just to see if it might be somewhere that you might like.
01:07:55I'm not going there.
01:07:56Okay, yes, fine.
01:07:57You're not going there.
01:07:58Okay, so...
01:07:59Just a minute.
01:08:01Michael has a message for Edward.
01:08:03Oh, no.
01:08:04No, no, no, no, no.
01:08:05I'm sorry, ladies, but...
01:08:06No, I don't want to do that.
01:08:07Could you give us some space?
01:08:08No, no, no, no, no.
01:08:09I don't want to be part of that.
01:08:10You talk to your daddy, Edward.
01:08:11No!
01:08:12You sit down here.
01:08:13I don't want to sit down here.
01:08:14I don't want to be here.
01:08:15I don't want to be here.
01:08:16I don't want to be here.
01:08:17I don't want to be here.
01:08:18I don't want to be here.
01:08:19I don't want to be here.
01:08:20I don't want to be here.
01:08:21I don't want to be here.
01:08:22Does the letter R mean anything?
01:08:25No.
01:08:26R?
01:08:27No.
01:08:28Raph.
01:08:29Raph.
01:08:30Raph.
01:08:31Oh, I was...
01:08:32Raphiel used to be Edward's boyfriend, but he broke up with Edward because Edward wouldn't
01:08:37commit, and now Raph has a new boyfriend, and they're moving to France together.
01:08:42Spirit says you haven't been yourself, Edward.
01:08:46Okay.
01:08:47That's enough.
01:08:48He says you have to man up.
01:08:50Take better care of the people you love.
01:08:53Don't make the same mistake you made with Raph again.
01:08:56Come on now.
01:08:57Do better.
01:09:00Take better care of the people I love.
01:09:05Right.
01:09:06The way he did.
01:09:08Okay.
01:09:09Why don't you ask Spirit why my ma'am had to raise two kids on her own while he went
01:09:13off and did whatever he wanted with whoever he wanted?
01:09:17Because he did, ma'am.
01:09:18That's...
01:09:19I mean, you want me to talk to dad?
01:09:20That's fine.
01:09:21I'll talk to dad.
01:09:22Ask Spirit how he felt about having a gay son.
01:09:23Edward, stop.
01:09:25You've got such a selective memory when it comes to that man, ma'am.
01:09:30Do you ever think about what he put me through?
01:09:32And no matter what I did, no matter what I did, he would always be disappointed.
01:09:36And who was there for him when he was sick?
01:09:38I was.
01:09:39And I know Andrew.
01:09:40He...
01:09:41I mean, Andrew brought the house down with the eulogy.
01:09:43He brought the house down.
01:09:44But was he there when it really mattered?
01:09:46No.
01:09:47I was.
01:09:48I was.
01:09:49I was there.
01:09:50And I am here right now.
01:09:57And just because I don't have kids doesn't mean my life has no value.
01:10:01I was.
01:10:07Alma, are you okay?
01:10:14Mum?
01:10:16Mum, I'm sorry.
01:10:20I'm sorry.
01:10:23But I should think I have to stand in front of them.
01:10:26Oh, Jesus!
01:10:27Are you all right?
01:10:28You're all right, Edward.
01:10:29Edward.
01:10:30Are you all right, Edward?
01:10:31Give him some space.
01:10:33Are you all right?
01:10:34Don't worry about a thing that your father is by your side.
01:10:37His hand is on your shoulder.
01:10:39That's the last fucking thing he wants to hear.
01:10:42Should we say a rosary?
01:10:44What?
01:10:45A rosary?
01:10:46Oh my god, there's something wrong with Alma.
01:10:48Alma, are you okay?
01:10:50Alma, you've nothing to worry about, pet.
01:10:53Michael is holding your hand.
01:10:55Stop making it sound like someone is going to die.
01:10:57No one is going to die.
01:10:59I'll call an ambulance.
01:11:01Someone get a paper bag from that drawer over there.
01:11:04Mom, please talk to her.
01:11:06Please talk to her.
01:11:07Please talk to her.
01:11:09The hospital wants to know,
01:11:11is anyone having a heart attack?
01:11:13We don't know.
01:11:15We don't know if the chap is gay.
01:11:17That fucker's that got to do with anything?
01:11:19Here, you talk to them.
01:11:21We can hang up mode.
01:11:25They're fine.
01:11:26Oh, thank god.
01:11:28That's it, that's it.
01:11:30There we go.
01:11:36Well, I'll tell you one thing, ladies.
01:11:38The lads are going buck wild.
01:11:40Sweet Jesus.
01:11:42Oh my god.
01:11:43Are they still here?
01:11:49Well, they are indeed.
01:11:51Where are they?
01:11:58They're standing in the corner there, behind Alma.
01:12:02And they're singing a ballad.
01:12:04One morning as I went a-fowling,
01:12:11Bright Phoebus adorning the play,
01:12:17It was down by the shades of Loch Evin,
01:12:23I met with this wonderful dame.
01:12:30Her voice was so sweet and so pleasing,
01:12:36These wonderful notes she did sing.
01:12:53Hi everyone.
01:12:54Hi.
01:12:55Hello everyone.
01:12:56Oh my god, where are you?
01:12:57It's actually, it's a long story,
01:12:59But I'm on a minibus.
01:13:00Like a min-
01:13:01Like a-
01:13:02I don't know what you say.
01:13:03Like a bus.
01:13:04I'm on a bus.
01:13:05Edward, just get everyone else is here,
01:13:07And let's you and me talk.
01:13:09Sure.
01:13:10Sure.
01:13:11Okay, so where do you want to start, darling?
01:13:13Shall we do influences?
01:13:15Why don't you talk about the books
01:13:17That had an impact on you as a teenager?
01:13:19Um...
01:13:24Okay, okay, um...
01:13:33Um, I actually, uh,
01:13:37I have something to confess to you guys,
01:13:39And I know my timing is appalling on this,
01:13:43But, um...
01:13:47I-I don't know for sure if I am going to be able to-
01:13:51To get over there.
01:13:53Things with my mom.
01:13:54She's...
01:13:55You know, she's quite unwell.
01:13:57As I mentioned before, and I-I can't-
01:13:59Edward, I'm sorry.
01:14:00Just to clarify here,
01:14:01Are you saying that you can't come over for the tour now?
01:14:03Edward, we're gonna take a breath here, okay?
01:14:08Um...
01:14:09We have a two-week tour booked in good faith.
01:14:12We have bookstores and press and signings.
01:14:15We have Ann Patchett doing a Q&A with you in her store in Nashville.
01:14:19I mean...
01:14:20I just-I just don't know if I can, uh, at this moment.
01:14:34It's just the way things are.
01:14:41Just to-
01:14:51họcаем independent,
01:14:56Hi Edward.
01:14:57We've just landed, so I'd say we'd be with you now about an hour?
01:14:59About an hour?
01:15:00I'm with this grumpy dope-dope who won't even talk to me.
01:15:03I can fucking hear you.
01:15:05See the state of that?
01:15:07That's been my holiday for three fucking days.
01:15:11Anyway, see you soon.
01:15:29See you soon.
01:15:59Thanks for taking care of me.
01:16:03It was an event trail.
01:16:06Yeah.
01:16:08What?
01:16:13Don't go.
01:16:16Edward, that's...
01:16:18That's not fair.
01:16:24You're using me as distraction.
01:16:25I'm not using you.
01:16:26You are.
01:16:26I'm not.
01:16:28You need to focus on.
01:16:29What's important now?
01:16:30Your book?
01:16:32Alma?
01:16:34Our time is gone and I'm...
01:16:37Why?
01:16:39Why?
01:16:40Why has it gone?
01:16:40Maybe because I'm with someone else now.
01:16:42What do you think?
01:16:42I know where things go with you.
01:16:43I kiss you back and then poof, you disappear.
01:16:53Where is Edward?
01:16:54I don't know.
01:16:54He's writing his book now.
01:16:56He's busy.
01:16:57He's minding alma.
01:16:58He has no time.
01:16:59Okay.
01:16:59Go to America.
01:17:00Go to America or don't go to America.
01:17:08Just...
01:17:09You just need to make a decision.
01:17:14For once, just make a decision and live with it.
01:17:18Well done.
01:17:19He's taken over forever.
01:17:21Let's go.
01:17:21There he is.
01:17:24He is.
01:17:28Yes...
01:17:29What does he do?
01:17:30Peace out.
01:17:33Why did he fall for life?
01:17:38Do not turn into it.
01:17:41Passover...
01:17:42里面 Omar
01:17:44I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice and to do good in their lives.
01:18:14I know that nothing is better for them than to do good in their lives, but I know that nothing is better for them than to do good in their lives.
01:18:44Do you just want to sit up?
01:19:14I know that nothing is better for them than to do good in their lives.
01:19:36You have to.
01:19:39What? What? I have to what?
01:19:44Book. Tour.
01:19:47Mum, I told you, okay? They said it was fine.
01:19:49What? I don't need to be there.
01:20:02You don't want... So now you know better than the publishers and my agents and all these other people?
01:20:06Live.
01:20:17Live your life.
01:20:23Mum, please.
01:20:24Please, I'm sorry, what does that even mean?
01:20:32I am living my life.
01:20:35Okay, look at me, here I am.
01:20:39Here I am, I'm living my life perfectly happy.
01:20:41Shh.
01:20:48All right.
01:21:01Shh.
01:21:03Shh.
01:21:05Shh.
01:21:06I don't know.
01:21:36I don't know.
01:22:06I don't know.
01:22:07I don't know.
01:22:08I don't know.
01:22:09I don't know.
01:22:10I don't know.
01:22:11Oh, thanks.
01:22:13Hey, how did you go?
01:22:16Oh, no.
01:22:17Oh, it's not the rough minds.
01:22:18You got lost.
01:22:20We will miss you now.
01:22:22Tell you what, once we get settled in, maybe you and Edward might come over for a visit.
01:22:30And I'll send you loads of pictures.
01:22:32Good boys are hard, but this one is particularly hard because working with you all for the past
01:22:46four years.
01:22:47That's been amazing.
01:22:48You will definitely.
01:22:49The Old New Year.
01:22:52I love you.
01:22:53I love you.
01:22:54I love you.
01:22:56I love you.
01:24:29Good morning, Alma.
01:24:37Mooshy B for break.
01:24:39Jean?

01:24:43Mooshy B for break.
01:24:49Mooshy B for break.
01:24:51You want a break from us?
01:24:53Mooshy.
01:24:54Is it moosy?
01:24:55Do you want moose for your hair?
01:24:58Is it about something you wear?
01:25:00Rosie, will you come here for a minute?
01:25:02Maud, please stop fidgeting with the controls on her iPad.
01:25:05I didn't touch them.
01:25:06Oh, is it something you want to eat for breakfast?
01:25:10Mushy beef.
01:25:12Mushrooms.
01:25:13Mushroom risotto.
01:25:15What would you be eating risotto for breakfast for?
01:25:17Hello, everyone, and welcome to the First Copy Podcast, coming to you live from the Corner Bookstore
01:25:24in New York City.
01:25:25Joining us this afternoon is the Irish novelist Edward Brady.
01:25:29We begin, as always, with an extract from his debut novel, Eon.
01:25:32He's very professional, isn't he?
01:25:34Stop talking.
01:25:36Sorry.
01:25:36Eon feigned indifference and took the drink from Fergal.
01:25:43What if it's spiked with drugs, he thought.
01:25:45For most of his adolescence, his mother was obsessed with the dangers of spiked drinks.
01:25:49She made him promise, on pain of death, that he would never accept a drink from anyone who
01:25:54wasn't a relation.
01:25:55And for one brief moment, he pondered the absurdity of the McDonough family.
01:26:00Every aunt, uncle, and cousin all standing in this tiny little gay bar with him, watching
01:26:05Ramona, the drag queen, pulling a prone necklace from her rear end.
01:26:09I go, like, really slowly.
01:26:12So, no, I'm not a good multitasker.
01:26:16No.
01:26:17That's my mom.
01:26:19There you are, Alma, you're famous.
01:26:27I'm in Philadelphia now, or Boston, I don't know.
01:26:32I'm in the next place.
01:26:33This is Patrick from the PR place, from the publishers.
01:26:37Hey.
01:26:37Hey.
01:26:40I kissed him last night.
01:26:43Fergal flashed an insincere smile, sensing his apprehension.
01:26:46Then winked and kissed him on the cheek before sashaying away like the bourgeois villain in
01:26:51Agatha Christie not.
01:26:52Agatha Christie used to write three books a year.
01:26:56Did he?
01:26:56She.
01:26:58Is that not the chap with the moustache that wrote The Jewel of the Nile?
01:27:01Death on the Nile.
01:27:03You're thinking of Poirot.
01:27:05Here's the character in her books.
01:27:06Eh, you just said it was a woman.
01:27:08No, Poirot is a man.
01:27:09Agatha Christie is a woman.
01:27:11David Suchet plays him.
01:27:13That's right.
01:27:13Stop talking.
01:27:14I saw him on the late show.
01:27:16He's a very spiritual...
01:27:17I can't hear, Edward.
01:27:18Hmm.
01:27:19Sounds like a creep to me.
01:27:20Stop talking.
01:27:21Jesus, the American accent is the pits, isn't it?
01:27:23It goes through my head.
01:27:24Hi, I'm from Denver.
01:27:26We're pleased to meet you.
01:27:27Have you heard of xenophobia, Jean?
01:27:29Have you heard of fistophobia, Rosie?
01:27:31You are all annoying me now.
01:27:33You are all annoying me now.
01:28:03You are all annoying me now.
