Transcript
00:00Five, four, three, two, one, and we got speed.
00:15Hey, Chris.
00:15Did you like that timing?
00:16Perfect.
00:18You know, going back to movies like Men Don't Leave, Fried Green Tomatoes, Son of a Woman,
00:22I'm just curious, when you were making those films, did you think any one was going to
00:28be a breakthrough film while you were making them?
00:31Well, Men Don't Leave, I thought it was, you know, I didn't know what to expect, and when
00:37I made it, I felt like a really good experience, and I thought, you know, this is going to do
00:40really well, and people told me, oh, you know, you're working with great people, it's going
00:43to do well, and then nobody saw the film, and it was like, oh, my God.
00:48Son of a Woman was definitely something that, when we were making it, we knew, you know,
00:52Al's going to win the award for this, no question.
00:53And, but you can never tell what a movie's box office is going to be like, and, you know,
00:59when I made Circle of Friends, I was afraid that, you know, this is going to be a great
01:03film, and nobody's going to go see it, and now it's going to be just a shame.
01:06Unfortunately, people did go out and see it, which was really satisfying.
01:09Going back to second and first, Son of a Woman, Al Pacino was great, so were you.
01:13I know a lot of offers must have come after that film.
01:16In the moments after that film was released, was that a particularly gratifying or scary time
01:22for you?
01:24Well, when you have successes, you think, oh, it's probably easy, then they've got
01:27all these offers coming in, but it gets more confusing then, because you do have the offers
01:29coming in.
01:30I mean, up until Son of a Woman, I auditioned for everything I got, and it was as a result
01:34of Son of a Woman that I started to just get offered films, so that was a new experience
01:38for me.
01:40You know, in a situation now, like on Batman, I'm getting a lot of attention from Batman
01:45and Mad Love and Circle of Friends, and not only am I getting offered films, but I'm getting
01:49offered films where they don't even have a director yet, so it's really confusing.
01:53Well, turning to Batman, the Batmobile, I was on the Warner Brothers lot when part of
01:58this movie was being shot, and I was wondering, how protective were they of the car when the
02:03car was on the set?
02:05I mean, they, you know, they polish that thing.
02:08There's about six guys polishing that thing with nice cloths constantly.
02:12There's not even a fingerprint on that car.
02:14Now, I understand that you wanted to drive the car and had a little bit of a mishap.
02:19There's rumors about this.
02:21There's rumors about this.
02:23I was just doing my job.
02:25Somebody moved a curb, and a bumper got hit by a curb.
02:30The curb bumper didn't hit a curb.
02:33Somebody threw a sidewalk at me.
02:35Well, how did it feel to sit in the hot seat of that car?
02:39It's pretty cool.
02:41It's real cool.
02:41I mean, it's a real car, you know what I mean?
02:43It really works.
02:44I think in the first two films, the car had to be pushed around the set, and it didn't
02:47really go.
02:48This one really goes.
02:50You know, everyone's asking you about the Robin outfit.
02:53Costume fittings for it, were they more rigorous than you expected?
02:57They were unbelievable.
02:58I mean, they just never ended.
03:00I would go in.
03:01First thing I did was get a plaster, you know, body mold of myself made, and then it was
03:05just fitting after fitting after fitting, getting that suit right, getting the circus costume
03:09right, you know, going through regular fittings for Dick Grayson's outfit, that, you know,
03:15Joel was going over and over.
03:16It was a major part of the film.
03:19You know, there's a great commissary on the Warner Brothers lot.
03:24I'm just curious, on the days when you rushed and you were hungry, did you ever venture outside
03:29the sound stages?
03:30In the costume.
03:32I would always go to the commissary, but lunch was the, most of the time I wasn't in the
03:37Robin costume.
03:37There weren't that many days when I was wearing the Robin costume.
03:40And if I was, lunchtime was the one time I was able to take my mask off, and I took it
03:44off immediately because it was so uncomfortable.
03:46I'd go in with the black ink around my eyes, and people would kind of look.
03:49But I didn't think I was looking too weird, considering there were a bunch of extras from
03:52Outbreak walking around.
03:53It looked like lepers.
03:55And one final question.
03:57I've been watching the McDonald's commercials with all the merchandise coming out.
04:01Has that kind of freaked you out a bit, just how much merchandise is involved with
04:05this movie?
04:06I feel like The Lion King.
04:07I feel like Simba or something all over the place.
04:12Well, what kind of things have you seen your image pop up on?
04:16Well, I did an interview, and the guy that was interviewing me brought a garbage can,
04:19Robin garbage can with the socks and dolls and the mugs and stuff.
04:22So I saw a lot of it.
04:25So what was your impression of all that?
04:29Who wants to buy this?
04:30They do.
04:32They do.
