Bengaluru, June 13 – A Rapido bike taxi rider was caught on camera slapping a woman passenger in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar area after a heated altercation over alleged rash driving and traffic violations. The incident has triggered widespread public outrage and renewed concerns over safety in app-based transport services.

The woman, a sales assistant at a jewellery store, was reportedly en route to work when she asked the rider to stop midway due to his reckless behaviour. After getting off, she confronted the rider, identified as Suman S (alias Suhas), which led to a heated argument. A language barrier—the woman spoke English, and the rider only Kannada—further intensified the conflict.

According to CCTV footage and the rider’s statement, the woman allegedly hit him first with her tiffin box. In response, he slapped her, causing her to fall to the ground. Onlookers recorded the video but did not intervene.

The woman initially hesitated to file a formal complaint, but police later registered one and detained the rider for questioning. An NCR (Non-Cognizable Report) has been filed, and police are considering upgrading it to an FIR, pending further investigation.

The incident comes just days before the Karnataka High Court’s ban on bike taxis, amplifying the debate on regulation and safety in the sector. The rider also allegedly used the phrase “Go back to your country”, injecting a communal angle into the controversy.

Rapido has declined to comment, citing the ongoing police probe.
