00:00King Louis's eyes drink in the sight of the widow, he adores bathing lustfully.
00:04Once she steps out of the tub, Louis stops hiding and drapes a cloak over her shoulders.
00:09Driven by passion, there let's meet. But when his hand touches her private parts,
00:14maintenance stops him firmly. As a devout Catholic, she refuses physical infidelity.
00:19Yet, she fears losing the king's favor. So, she arranges for a young girl to sleep with the king,
00:25hoping to satisfy his needs. Watching Louis revel in pleasure, maintenance heart shatters.
00:31In a desperate bid for solace, she turns to God in prayer. Hours later, Louis comes to her.
00:37Deeply moved by the magnitude of her sacrifice, he is overcome with emotion. The next day,
00:43gossip spread in the palace about maintenance, saying that she had sold her body and done
00:48slutty things at Villarso. Upon hearing this, maintenance immediately grows tense and goes
00:53to confess her sins. Soon, the rumors reach Louis' ears. Maintenance insists it's not true.
00:59It was someone trying to tarnish her reputation. Louis loves maintenance so much that he doesn't
01:04doubt her purity. In a show of unwavering support for Maintenance, he issues a warning to the nobility.
01:10Anyone who slanders Maintenance's good name again will be severely punished. After some investigation,
01:16the source of the rumor is none other than Montespan. Enraged, Louis sentences Montespan to exile in a
01:23local convent, banning her from participating in court life forever, facing the callous disregard
01:28of her former lover. Montespan does not resist. Instead, she reminds him not to place himself
01:34beyond mortal sway. Yet Louis remains unshaken, as his love for Montespan withered away long past.
01:40Burning with resentment, Montespan's force to expose Maintenance's hypocritical facade one day.
01:46The king's favoritism toward Maintenance and coldness tore his wife up at the queen's heart.
01:51At midnight, the queen slips into Emperor Leopold's room, desperate to reignite the
01:56passion that have eluded her for far too long. After their intimacy, the two can no longer hold
02:01back their love for each other. Leopold seizes the moment and asks the queen for a favor.
02:07The current king of Spain, Carlos II, is the queen's brother and has no children. Louis wants to claim
02:13Spain after Carlos II's death, but then the Habsburgs would cease to exist. Therefore, Leopold wants to
02:19marry his niece to the king of Spain to ensure that the Spanish throne does not fall into the
02:24hands of the Bourbons. He pleads with the queen to write to her brother to persuade him to accept
02:29this marriage. The queen is torn. Ever since she married Louis, he has only filled her life with
02:35solitude and infidelity. Unlike Louis, Leopold wraps her in the embrace of tender love. In the end,
02:41the queen chose to betray her husband by writing a proposal of union to her brother.
02:45However, Leopold's niece, Eleanor, is reluctant to get married. Looking at the portrait of the king
02:52of Spain, who has physical defects due to consignious marriage, Eleanor gets goosebumps.
02:57But for matters of such great national interest, a playful girl's rejection won't be taken into
03:02account. Meanwhile, Leopold sends his men to contact the Pope. The Pope approves of the intermarriage
03:08within the House of Habsburg, because the Holy See is desperate to prevent Fraz from monopolizing
03:14power and dominating the continent. At least by doing so, the heir to the Spanish throne would
03:19still be of Habsburg blood. The Bourbons would not be able to meddle in Spanish politics.
03:24Thus, Leopold agrees to offer Louis 80% of Spanish territory in exchange for French military support
03:30when the Ottoman Empire attacks Vienna. However, before the agreement is signed, Louis senses something
03:37is amiss. Some Austrian nobles are heading to Spain, claiming it's a family gathering. But family
03:43gatherings are either funerals or weddings. Louis instantly becomes alert. To prevent the
03:48wedding from taking place, Louis asks Leopold's niece to stay in Versailles. Leopold is naturally
03:54reluctant. But if he refuses, the plan for the marriage alliance might be exposed. Moreover,
04:00Eleanor herself is very eager to stay in France. Under pressure, Leopold is forced to leave his niece
04:06in Versailles and return to Vienna himself. The negotiations that have lasted for half a month
04:11finally come to an end. However, Leopold doesn't give up. He asks the queen to secretly take his
04:17niece to Spain to marry Carlos II. To help the union go through, Leopold bribes Sophie to become
04:24his spy. Sophie makes up some excuses and successfully dispels Louis' suspicions. Then returns to the
04:30Versailles. The queen has her maid forged a letter, indicating that King Carlos II of Spain is critically
04:36ill. Using this as an excuse, the queen pleads with Louis to allow her to leave the palace and
04:42see her brother one last time. Seeing the queen's pale face and sadness, Louis grants her request
04:47with a second thought. Meanwhile, Sophie is coordinating with the queen. Since Eleanor doesn't
04:53want to marry, Sophie has to trick her out of the palace and force her to Spain. The queen lies to her
04:58husband and embarks on a journey to Spain. Sophie lures Eleanor to wait for the queen's carriage along
05:04the way. However, just two hours after setting out, the queen changes her mind. After all, she doesn't
05:10have the guts to betray her husband for her lover. The secret marriage alliance plan of Habsburg fails.
05:16In the evening, the queen returns to the palace along the same route. Louis is puzzled by the sudden
05:22return of his wife. The queen explains that she is not feeling well, cannot endure the journey,
05:27so she has to give up visiting her brother. But this does not convince the suspicious Louis.
05:32Soon, the spies in Spain send back the intelligence. Carlos II is not critically ill at all. Instead,
05:39he is full of vitality and will live for a while. Louis finally realizes that the queen has been lying.
05:45He deduces that the queen must be having an affair with Leopold, which is why she did such a thing.
05:51Louis accuses his wife of being a traitor for conspiring with her cousin to destroy his kingdom.
05:57All of the queen's excuses and lies were exposed. In a feat of anger, Louis has the queen
06:02grounded. When Leopold learns of this, he thinks the queen can be trusted. He has to resort to a
06:08radical measure to prevent Louis from annexing Spain. So he instructs Sophie to kill the queen,
06:13thus severing the ties between Spain and France once and for all. In order to develop the country,
06:19the king sends his guards to impose taxes on the people and forcefully seizes able-bodied men
06:24to work on the sewer and lighting projects. Such tyrannical behavior soon rouses strong
06:29dissatisfaction among the people, especially when the finance minister is preaching the importance
06:35of paying taxes on the street. The people can no longer tolerate it. They throw rotten leaves and
06:40eggs at Colbert in protest. Seeing Colbert being attacked, Louis explodes in anger. He regards this
06:47as the most serious provocation to the royal power by the people and orders severe punishment.
06:57Soon, Martial leads the royal guards to the streets for rests. Except for women and children,
07:02almost all those who have beaten Colbert are rested and thrown into prison, including the son of a
07:07shoemaker. The shoemaker has no choice but to lead the workers to kidnap Martial, demanding an exchange
07:14with the king. As long as the king does not release the captives, Martial's body will be scarred.
07:19Louis is unwilling to compromise with the lowly people and wishes he could kill them all.
07:24Felipe advises him not to rule with violence. Only by treating the people gently will they respect
07:29the king. Nevertheless, nothing can budge the deeply ingrained worldview of an imperious king.
07:35On the surface, Louis agrees to let Felipe exchange for the hostages. However, when Martial is
07:41released, the guards follow Louis' instructions and fire on the people in a ruthless oppression.
07:46Felipe is extremely disappointed in his brother and accuses him of being a tyrant. Louis has to make
07:53a little compromise. The next day, Louis releases the imprisoned people. The streets of Paris are in
07:58an uproar, but the guards choose one of the prisoners and behead him in public. As a warning to the people
08:04and a mockery of their pursuit of justice. Obviously, the king has no intention of showing kindness to the
08:10people. After silencing the people's petty complaints, Louis indulges in carnal pleasures
08:15with women. Maintenance is furious and accuses the king of a lack of self-discipline.
08:21Do you not wish to harness your impulses rather than be a slave to them?
08:25In fact, Louis does it to make Maintenance jealous, driven by frustration over her unwavering refusal to
08:31sleep with him. After a big quarrel, Louis gives in. He doesn't want to hurt the woman he loves,
08:37so he lets Maintenance guide him to seek spiritual redemption. However, little does he know that this
08:43pious-seeming woman was once consumed by carnal desires. On a walk, Maintenance happens upon
08:49Charlotte and Moraine, who are out walking with a baby. Maintenance advises Charlotte not to keep
08:54her baby here, because the environment here is not good for the children's health. Charlotte takes it as
09:00a sign that Maintenance is provoking her. She sarcastically says that Maintenance has had so
09:06many lovers and yet can't produce a child. Maintenance holds a grudge against her. The next
09:11day, Maintenance leads the guards to barge into Charlotte's room. It turns out that according to
09:16the court rules, children are not allowed to be raised in the palace. Charlotte is forced to part
09:21with her son and is in great pain. When Montespan learns of this, she hands over something incriminating
09:26about Maintenance. An old painter comes to Charlotte with a collection of portraits and Montespan's
09:32instruction. The painter presents her with a collection of pornographic portraits of Maintenance.
09:37While Charlotte has no desire to hurt people, Lorraine is not so kind. When Lorraine catches sight of these
09:43scandalous artworks, instantly igniting his insatiable appetite for gossip, that very night, Maintenance
09:49erotic swept through the palace like wildfire, triggering a storm of scandalized chatter. The nobles laugh
09:55heartily at Maintenance. Seeing how happy they are, Louis joins in out of curiosity. But what he sees
10:02leaves him stunned. The woman he once regarded as angelic, pure as driven snow, turns out to have a
10:07past filled with debauchery. Maintenance doesn't try to excuse herself and admits that it is all true.
10:13She has been deceiving the king all along. She had been a Protestant, but after losing her husband,
10:19she was in dire straits. To earn a living, she had to go to Villarceau and engage in lewd activities.
10:25She'd been repenting for a long time. Louis erupts in a feat of white-hot fury and feels deeply humiliated.
10:32Sensing his unyielding refusal to forgive her, Maintenance decides to leave him. She doesn't want to stay
10:38in the palace and endure those judgmental looks. So she goes to a convent and does penance through
10:43ascetic practices. However, the abbess can tell that she still has worldly desires and forces her to admit it.
10:49I want power. I want to crush my enemies. I want to feel the fire of our Lord inside me.
10:56After this incident, Louis' prejudice against Protestants grows stronger. When a Protestant
11:01scientist is explaining the structure of the brain and promoting science in the palace,
11:06Louis gets annoyed. He can't tolerate Protestants spreading dissent, so he has his guards arrest the
11:11scientist and put him in jail. Ever since Maintenance leaves, Louis is like a walking corpse.
11:17Late at night, the king summons Eleanor, who adores him, into his room, to distract himself from
11:23missing Maintenance. He intends to deflower Eleanor. Eleanor's eyes sparkle with anticipation,
11:28yet she's naive to the games men play. After removing her clothes, Eleanor excitedly asks Louis
11:34if he loves her. Louis immediately loses interest. He says that Eleanor is still a child and should learn
11:41to grow up first, and then drives her away. Seeing the king as if he had lost his soul,
11:46Bontemps can bear it. He advises the king to bring back Maintenance. Maintenance had always been a
11:52positive influence on Louis. She should be forgiven for her past mistakes. Louis worries that he's
11:57showing weakness by going to her. Bontemps replies that it is just the opposite. Inspired, Louis rushes to
12:04the convent to see Maintenance that very night. When the painfully repentant Maintenance hears the
12:09voice of her lover, her heart skips a beat. The proud king Louis falls to his knees and begs Maintenance
12:15to return to Versailles to guide him. No woman can replace Maintenance's position in Louis' heart.
12:20Without her, Louis not only lost his judgment, he could hardly live. Seeing the king pleading and
12:26kneeling, Maintenance's heart melts. Maintenance returns with him to Versailles and vows to do her best to
12:31help him achieve his grand ambitions. Louis confers on Maintenance and the status of a permanent member
12:37of his council. This is Maroon Recap. Check out my homepage and you'll see more recaps of Versailles.
