00:00Hey, welcome to the program, I'm DJ Sixsmith, you're watching The Sit Down.
00:13Kellen Lutz here with us, brand new show, coming to CBS, FBI Most Wanted.
00:17There it is.
00:18FBI Most Wanted.
00:19How are you, man? Good to meet you.
00:20Hey, you too, man.
00:21You got a lot going on in your life. Your wife's pregnant, got a new show on the way.
00:24What's all this like? Are you absorbing it? Are you present? How are you dealing with it all?
00:28I am, I am. I'm a bit of a control freak. I like being in control and doing television in a different city for such a long period of time is definitely something new.
00:38But my wife and I were handling it pretty awesome.
00:41I mean, to film in New York, and I've always wanted to live here, my wife's always wanted to live here, and then shooting a show that takes place all around New York has been really special for us to really dive in and feel like we're New Yorkans now.
00:57The weather's kind of crazy, especially with my wife being pregnant.
01:00Definitely a pretty wild time to be here.
01:01It is, it is. But the cool thing about New York is everything, there's an app for everything. There's a service for everything.
01:06And as much as I want to be in charge and take care of everything, you got to have a comfortable life, a peaceful life, and you need to have help in some seasons of life.
01:18And when you live in a big city like this, the more help you can get, the better.
01:22Totally. What have been some of the cool New York City experiences so far for you?
01:26For the show?
01:27For the show and just for life in general.
01:28So, for the show, we barely shoot in a studio. Maybe one out of the nine days. So, the rest, the eight other days, are all in different suburbs. So, we shoot from White Plains to Sleepy Hollow to Skarsburg to Bronxville, Long Beach, Jerseyside.
01:48So, you're all over the Tri-State.
01:49All over the place. So, it's really cool seeing New York for the beauty that is New York. A lot of people just come to Manhattan, and it's a beautiful state.
01:59Yeah, definitely is.
02:00So, that's been a cool thing. Just the other day, it was just snowing in winter wonderland. It was just such a cool experience. I have my good heavy jacket now, which I've never owned before. Now I have that, and it's just cool. It's really a unique season of life for us.
02:17Definitely. So, being on a Dick Wolf show is definitely a pretty cool experience. You've done a bunch of different things before. What sticks out about this experience? What have you liked the most so far?
02:25Man, I don't have much experience in the TV world. You know, it's a different structure. Films, I've done a lot of movies where you know the stop and start, and you know the arc of your character.
02:36For television, I've done a lot of miniseries. So, nothing, you know, knock on wood, we hope this goes forever.
02:42We have such a great cast. I love my cast. We have such a great captain, Julian McMahon, who's leading our ship. Nicest guy I've worked with.
02:52And just the rest of our cast is Laird, Nathaniel, Roxy, Keisha.
02:57It's a really cool squad and very unique.
02:59But the cool thing about a Dick Wolf show is how well-oiled it is.
03:08From stepping on to set, we have the best camera crew. We have the best actors, best writers. Everything's just so well-oiled that even my agent was like, oh, how's it going? Season one, like, are you?
03:23I'm like, what do you mean? He's like, usually, like, takes a while for everyone to get on their feet and to function as a unit.
03:29I'm like, this is easy. It really is. I mean, the subject matter is really dark. It's really gritty.
03:36We are an elite team going after the most heinous of criminals.
03:41The worst of the worst.
03:42The worst of the worst.
03:43So, the subject matter, and I used to think Dick Wolf shows were sort of, they don't go super deep from the shows that I've watched.
03:53You know, it's good entertainment. And when I watched our backdoor pilot from FBI into FBI Most Wanted, and seeing that we just blew a guy's arm off, I'm like, these are.
04:05And then the stories, the writing underneath, I'm like, this is like a movie. It's a really dark movie.
04:11And to think that a lot of these stories come from real life Most Wanted-less stories.
04:17And I'd even go online, my wife and I, we'd love.
04:19Doing a deep dive there?
04:20Yeah, detective work. And we're like, yep, that came from that.
04:23Oh, man.
04:24And that's sort of the sad juxtaposition, is that we'll never have an end to the Most Wanted.
04:32Right.
04:32Because there's just so much, there's so many criminals out there doing just bad, heinous things, you know?
04:40So, it's cool to be a part of a team.
04:42I've always had this injustice-fighting heart in me.
04:45So, to play an FBI agent, it just feels at home.
04:50I feel at home here, even though it's freezing.
04:53Where does that injustice in your heart, fighting for, come from?
04:57Yeah, I think God just made me this way.
04:59And I also come from a very large family.
05:03I was a middle child.
05:04Six brothers, one sister.
05:05Wow, okay.
05:05So, I always felt being a middle child, I had to fight for my own food.
05:10You know, mom would make a big casserole, and the older boy, you gotta dive in.
05:14So, I'm a fighter for myself.
05:15But then also, just in my heart, the injustice against children, women, animals, mankind, like what it means to be human.
05:24And anyone who threatens that, really, it just affects me.
05:29So, I've always been a big advocate for that fight against injustice with my charity work.
05:35And just in life in general, it really, you know, you read these scripts, and the table reads, you're like, oh.
05:42Put things in perspective, yeah.
05:44Yeah, and you sort of feel like you're playing a real-life superhero, even though it's movie magic, right?
05:54It's fictitious, but you're telling a story.
05:58And just to educate people, because our bad guys, which I feel like a lot of bad guys, they don't start out bad.
06:06There's something that happens from...
06:08Right, you start out good, and then how do you get bad?
06:09You know, where does that all come from?
06:11Yeah, and there's usually something you can trace it back to, which is really important for our audience to see with our format for FBI Most Wanted.
06:19You see the story, the arc of the bad guy within the first act, and you see the crime that happens.
06:25So, everyone is in this place of seeing them in a human way versus trying to figure out why they did it.
06:34You're kind of understanding a little bit, and then they kind of go off the deep end.
06:38And you've got to reel them in, and you've got to bring them to justice.
06:40So, it's a really cool show, and it's very new for me, and I love my character.
06:47I love Kenny Crosby.
06:49He's ex-Army, so he's a vet.
06:51He struggles with some PTSD.
06:53Which a lot of guys do.
06:54I have two brothers in the Army, so my oldest one does, and my youngest one, I hope he never does, but it's a real thing.
07:00And in more ways than just being a part of the military, you can have PTSD from a lot of different things.
07:07From a lot of different things.
07:08It's a real issue.
07:10And just, I mean, I have my episode, episode seven, which was really deep diving into my character and this other vet who kind of goes on a killing spree.
07:20But, yeah, it's a gritty show.
07:23There's always a good outcome at the end, and each show is really cool because you can watch it on its own.
07:29You don't have to follow the story arc of the season.
07:32You can just jump right in.
07:33You can jump right in, and it catches you within the first act, which I love.
07:37That's really cool.
07:37What did your brothers think when you told them about the role in the show?
07:41Well, one of my first acting jobs, I was going to college to be a chemical engineer at Chapman.
07:46Yeah, I love science.
07:48And acting, you know, God kind of took me this way.
07:51Yeah, and one of my first gigs was Generation Kill, where I got to play a character named Jason Lilly from the book, from the 2003 invasion into Baghdad.
08:01And to this day, I even called Jason or friends about my big episode where it's all about PTSD and talking to him about just the issues.
08:12And, you know, it's really cool to portray these people and also have resources like my brothers, like Jason, who I can talk to.
08:22And even my brother Drexel, he's like, thank you, you told the real story that wasn't sugar-coated after we did Generation Kill.
08:31That's why I love my character, because I feel like my whole career I've been playing military roles, police roles, FBI roles.
08:39And funny enough, growing up in Arizona, my next-door neighbor was an FBI agent.
08:43Oh, wow.
08:44So he would tell us crazy stories.
08:46So it's like a full-circle moment for you.
08:48It sort of is, and it feels, I feel at home.
08:50I feel at home playing this character and working with Dick Wolf and the FBI team.
08:56That's really cool.
08:56So the other part of your career is doing the whole Twilight thing.
08:59You know, it was a good run for you.
09:00What was that chapter of your life like, and what do you look back on now and think about?
09:04Again, life is built up in these, like, little chapters.
09:08Some are larger, some are smaller.
09:10And, you know, for that, I love it.
09:14You know, I really do.
09:15I look back, I wish I was present more.
09:19There was a lot going on, I'm sure.
09:20There was a lot going on.
09:22And in your young 20s, and I hadn't experienced that much life to be just catapulted into this rollercoaster of experiences.
09:33You know, it was such a unique experience that I loved it.
09:38I loved it.
09:39I wish I could go back and re-experience it again, because I think I'd experience it a little bit more presently, obviously.
09:44But I love my cast.
09:46I love my character.
09:47I've been really blessed with playing characters that, they have layers, but there's always some sort of, I love comedy.
09:53There's a lot of comedic layers in the characters that I've played, and I appreciate that.
09:58And in this, that's what's really cool, too, because Keisha Castle-Hughes and I were the young bucks in the show.
10:03Right.
10:04And the cool thing about FBI agents, when they're going to all these different cities, and they have their MCC, their Mobile Command Center, you're always waiting, right?
10:13And you want to get, like, the cool, good food in your city.
10:16So we had this one scene where we're in Buffalo, and Keisha and I, her character Hannah, we always joke about, like, hey, what do you want to eat?
10:23You know, and I have some comedy that comes out, because we're in Buffalo, so Buffalo wings have got to be good here, right?
10:28Got to have it, right?
10:28Obviously, let's get some Buffalo wings.
10:30So, yeah, I like it.
10:33That's cool.
10:33Well, speaking of comedy, you were in Accepted, which is a super funny movie.
10:37What do you remember about that experience?
10:38That's, like, a nice cult movie that's had some good legs years later.
10:41Yeah.
10:42Yeah.
10:42I was actually just talking to Justin Long about that a couple weeks ago.
10:46He was going to meet up with Jonah, and we had Blake in that movie.
10:50Good friend.
10:50Louis Black's in that movie.
10:51Louis is in that.
10:53You know, my buddy Brendan.
10:54Justin, a really great actor, a really fun part.
10:59I mean, Steve Pink directed it, and it was such a cool experience, and I think that was
11:06one of those where we were just having fun.
11:09Like, the producers, director, they just encouraged us to just run with it.
11:14And Justin, such a brilliant actor.
11:17He, I really learned a lot from him with watching him work on that, because he just does that.
11:22You know, he's very present, and he loves to improv.
11:26And, you know, you have Jonah Hill, who's shot.
11:29All-timer.
11:30Yeah.
11:30All-timer now.
11:31Especially from that role to where he is now.
11:33I mean, think about it.
11:35He's played a lot of unique roles.
11:37Yeah.
11:38Yeah.
11:38A little different than being on the lawn, running around saying, ask me about my wiener,
11:41right?
11:42When did you just see that?
11:43I mean, I've seen it a few times.
11:45That's a good memory.
11:46It's one of those that kind of sticks out.
11:47We just re-watched that.
11:48I'm like, man, this is so funny.
11:50Yeah, I mean, that was like mid-2000s, and it's still funny, you know?
11:53Yeah.
11:53It's a pretty cool deal.
11:55How about your faith?
11:55That's something that's a big part of your life.
11:57So how has that grounded you, and how has that helped you just throughout your career
12:00as well?
12:01Faith.
12:01I mean, you just have to have faith.
12:03I think it's, I had a talk with another actor when, and I'm not trying to push any agenda,
12:11you know, and I don't convict anyone.
12:13I'm just, I believe what I believe, and I'm not here to judge.
12:16That's not my job, but it's got to be such a lonely life to live if you don't believe
12:24in something, and in our profession, when you can't control what auditions you get or
12:30if you book, I mean, it is a very depressing career that I've chosen.
12:35Very isolating.
12:36Very isolating.
12:37Well, isolating, but also everyone's telling you no.
12:39A lot of attention.
12:40Kellen, I'm too tall.
12:41Kellen, I'm too pretty.
12:42Kellen, I'm not pretty enough.
12:43I'm sure you've heard all those things.
12:44I've heard all of them.
12:45Yeah, which is insane.
12:46Like, can we just focus on the acting, you know?
12:48Yeah, but, you know, and to each their own, like, the cast directors have to get the role
12:53that they want, and, you know, the best actor for the job, or the one now who has the most
12:57social media numbers, like, it's...
12:59Yeah, that's a part of it, too.
13:00But my faith has really just kept me solid through it, and it's been my anchor, and to
13:06the actors who don't have faith, I always ask them, I'm like, what do you have to, like,
13:13hold on to then if all you have is yourself and you can't get to where you want to get
13:19on your own, you know?
13:20And a lot of those actors, they fight depression, and they fight mental illness, and they have
13:29codependencies with different pills and substances, and it's not the answer.
13:35You know, it's self-medicating, and I'd rather, you know, just have faith in that the best
13:41is yet to come.
13:42And there's been many seasons that I've, I mean, especially after Twilight, how do you
13:48go from something like this, and you have expectations that it's always going to be
13:52that way, and then it's not, and these highs and lows, and my faith has always been constant,
13:59and that's actually one of the main reasons I married my wife, because I didn't realize
14:03how important my faith was that I needed to find that in my partner in life.
14:10And so when I found that in her, and my heart, my spirit, and her spirit was like,
14:15yes, this is, this is you guys, this is what I have for you guys, and it was the easiest
14:21yes in my life to marry her.
14:22That's awesome.
14:23Good deal.
14:23Kellen, really nice to meet you.
14:24Hey, thank you.
14:25Thanks a lot.
14:25Check this guy out.
14:26January 7th, the big day, FBI Most Wanted.
14:28For Kellen, I'm DJ.
14:29See you next time.
