Police around the world use facial recognition technology to identify suspects. AI suggests potential matches from databases – but a human officer ultimately decides if the match is correct.

Around the world, police follow a similar method.

They compare surveillance footage to biometric data stored in their databases.

Police can request facial image analysis automatically, with no oversight.

They simply run the facial recognition software, which returns five possible matches.

Then, on the basis of those hits, the officer chooses the one they think most resembles the person they're looking for.

In essence, the software suggests options. It doesn't deliver foolproof results.

A human decides whether the image from the camera matches the database entry.
