Police around the world use facial recognition technology to identify suspects. AI suggests potential matches from databases – but a human officer ultimately decides if the match is correct.

00:03They compare surveillance footage to biometric data stored in their databases.

00:13Police can request facial image analysis automatically, with no oversight.

00:21They simply run the facial recognition software, which returns five possible matches.

00:29Then, on the basis of those hits, the officer chooses the one they think most resembles the person they're looking for.

00:41In essence, the software suggests options. It doesn't deliver foolproof results.

00:47A human decides whether the image from the camera matches the database entry.

00:53But without additional evidence, this method clearly falls short.
