00:01On this day in space.
00:03In 1854, Bernard Riemann spoke his classic lecture on curved space.
00:08Riemann was a 19th century mathematician from Germany.
00:12His landmark lecture included a workable definition
00:14of how someone might measure the curvature of space.
00:17In the first part of his talk, Riemann asked the question
00:20of how we might define an n-dimensional space.
00:23This resulted in the definition of Riemann's space
00:25and laid the foundation for the field of Riemannian geometry.
00:28Next, Riemann discussed the dimension of real space
00:31and what geometry one should use to describe it.
00:34The lecture was extremely successful,
00:36even though Riemann's ideas were so advanced
00:38that only a few could truly understand it at the time.
00:41The lecture was published two years after his death in 1866
00:44and is considered one of the most important works in geometry.
00:47And that's what happened on this day in space.
