00:00Muchísimas gracias, señor Presidente, para la invitación esta mañana y su trabajando a la Presidencia de la Presidenta para todos los mexicanos.

00:14Thank you very much for the question.

00:16I think that the process of the President having a press conference like this every day is very impressive

00:27and shows a degree of openness in government which is not found in many countries, indeed anywhere at all in the world.

00:36And I think we should recognize that in President López Obradorís approach to government.

00:44And as somebody who's visited Mexico many times over many years, my wife is Mexican,

00:51I'm very impressed with a lot of the changes that are happening at the moment.

00:55Because Mexico is faced with many problems, the greatest one in my view is the inequality in the living standards of the population

01:05and the poverty of many people in particular parts of Mexico.

01:11I've been in Chappas over the last few days and I've seen for myself that levels of inequality.

01:18But a government intervention to ensure that there is development in the poorest places, particularly rural development,

01:29improvements in education and in health and in food supply for the poorest people,

01:36is and will make a massive difference.

01:40There is nothing more wasteful in this world than consigning children to a life of poverty

01:47where they don't achieve in education, they don't achieve their potential and the whole society loses out.

01:54We're all damaged by inequality and therefore I'm very impressed with the government's determination

02:02to invest in the needs of the very poorest people, particularly those who work in the informal economy in Mexico.
