00:00China's exports to the United States fell 34.5 percent in May from a year earlier,
00:07new customs data show, hours ahead of another round of trade talks between the two countries
00:12in London. China's total exports rose 4.8 percent last month, a slightly slower year-on-year increase.
00:21Exports to Southeast Asia and Europe remained robust, growing 14.8 percent and 12 percent.
00:26Exports will likely rebound somewhat in June thanks to a 90-day suspension of most of the
00:33tariffs China and the U.S. imposed on each other in their escalating trade war. At the same time,
00:38China's own domestic markets are suffering, with consumer prices falling 0.1 percent in May amid
00:44sluggish demand. The next round of negotiations follows a phone call between U.S. President
00:50Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, but it's unclear if that exchange will lead to any
00:55significant progress during the talks this week.
