Today, we’re answering a big question: can you play international cricket with just three fingers? We’ll unpack what the Laws say, and real players who’ve done it!
MCC and ICC Laws don’t say a player must have five fingers.
Fielders can wear hand protection with the umpire’s permission, but no rule requires five fingers.
Physically, missing fingers does not disqualify you from playing Test, ODIs, or T20.
It all depends on which fingers you are missing and on which hand. If you’re a right-arm batter or bowler, you’ll need your thumb, plus at least the index and middle finger on that hand to grip the ball or the bat. Without these 3 fingers on your dominant hand, you can’t even survive in cricket, let alone play it internationally. On your non-dominant hand, it doesn’t matter which fingers are missing as long as you have a thumb on that hand. You could become a bowler with a missing thumb on your non-dominant hand, but it won't be easy to use the bat or field with that hand. If you don’t have a thumb on either hand, then you can’t survive in international cricket, but you could play disabled cricket.
There are 3 international cricketers that I know of who played international cricket with missing fingers: Azeem Hafeez, Waqar Younis and Martin Guptill.
Azeem Hafeez – Played for Pakistan in the 80s with two fingers missing on his non-bowling hand.
Waqar Younis – One of the fastest bowlers ever, and he played without a pinky.
Martin Guptill – Missing three toes, but still dominated at the top of the order.
So yes, you can play international cricket with just three fingers.
Passion and skill matter more than body parts!
