00:00Welcome to the Criterium du Dauphiné 2025. We are set for a blockbuster 77th edition featuring
00:13the top three riders from last year's Tour de France. Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco
00:18Evenepoel. It's their first tussle since last July and it should give us a clearer idea of what we can
00:23expect this summer. In 2020 it was a little bit different than now. I became fourth there and I hope I can improve
00:34that result this week but if not, no worries. It's kind of a preparation race for the Tour de France.
00:41I just hope for a good sensation that I can, I don't need to do so much work after the Dauphiné.
00:49Vingegaard hasn't raced since withdrawing from Paris-Nice in March but he's here with a strong
00:53team including the man who won that race, Matteo Jorgensen. As for Evenepoel, he had a decent
00:59spring after his comeback from injury and he's hoping to improve on seventh place at last year's Dauphiné.
01:07Of course I'm here with a lot of motivation to do very well. I think it's looking for those last
01:14percentages and details towards the Tour shape and then I hope to end up higher than I did last year.
01:20So yeah, we have a pretty strong team. I'm feeling confident as well so I think a lot is possible this week.
01:28The Dauphiné isn't really a race for sprinters and today's bumpy final may be too tough for fast
01:33men like Jonathan Milan. Normally Mathieu van der Poel would be the man to beat but the Dutchman is nursing
01:39an injured wrist suffered at the mountain bike world cup a few weeks ago. The wrist is not 100% but it's
01:46it's still okay. The only thing is I didn't really do like all-out effort so we will see how I feel
01:52today. I think Milan is a favorite. He's the fastest of this bunch but maybe we can try and do something.
02:04Just under 200 kilometers today from Dommerat to Montlusson with seven climbs and the Côte de Buffon,
02:09600 meters at 8.6% could throw a spanner in the works for the sprinters. The riders will go up it three
02:16times including once in the last seven kilometers.
02:28Well two French riders decided to stretch their legs today. Pierre Thierry at the back here in the
02:32red and black of Archaea B&B hotels and Paul Orsonin in the red and yellow of Cofidis. They didn't pose
02:39much of a threat to the peloton and built a maximum gap of almost four minutes but it was down to a
02:44minute and twenty by the time they reached the intermediate sprint in Montlusson. Thierry rolling
02:49through ahead of Orsonin which left one bonus second for the peloton. Now we saw Visma Lisa bike chasing
02:54these at Paris-Nice with Jorgenton but this time they were outgunned by Niels Pollitt,
02:59a teammate off Pogaccia at UAE Team Emirates XRG. The two leaders maintaining a small gap over the
03:07peloton as they continued to battle for mountains points although it was admittedly a rather one-sided
03:12battle. Orselin leading the way over the first four climbs of the day to guarantee himself the race's
03:18first polka dot jersey. Well that was job done as far as he was concerned so he sat up and let himself
03:25be caught by the bunch Thierry forging on solo. The young Frenchman led by nearly a minute as they
03:38entered the final 50 kilometers but on the fifth of the day's seven climbs things were starting to
03:43stir back in the peloton.
03:55Thierry would soon be joined by Fred Wright of Bahrain Victorious as the bunch eased off a bit after the climb.
04:02Thierry and Wright heading over the finish line and into the final lap with a lead of 36 seconds.
04:13Well Thierry picked up a final polka dot point on the penultimate climb before calling it a day.
04:21Wright going solo and now leading the peloton by just over 20 seconds.
04:27The big names starting to swarm towards the front on these narrow twisting roads
04:31and Lidltrek was still leading the chase for Milan.
04:35Wright showing impressive resistance to hold them off until the final climb of the Cote de Buffon
04:40inside the last 10k but he was swallowed up as the attacks began to fly.
04:46Axel Laurence with a furious move now for Ineos Grenadiers and he does not want Jonathan Milan to win this stage.
04:55There was a brief lull just after the summit and that was when Wingergaard stepped on the gas.
05:02Wingergaard poised now to strike. He sees that there is a chance and he decides he's going to test the world champion.
05:10The Dane quickly followed by Pogaccia, Van der Poel and Santiago Buetrago so much for this being a sprint stage.
05:17Evan der Poel also wanted to join the party and did a superb job to bridge across so a five-star breakaway now leading.
05:25The sprint teams were chasing hard but it wasn't going to be easy to bring them back.
05:29Into the final kilometre and they still had a few seconds. The peloton were closing but not fast enough.
05:35It would be a sprint between the favourites in Mont-Lusanne with Van der Poel looking to go from distance.
05:43Tade Pogaccia manoeuvres them into the front of him.
05:45It's so close now. 500 metres to go. The peloton are closing in.
05:54Are they going to be caught on the line by one of these sprinters?
05:57Sam Watson starts to sprint. They all look around at each other and it may well be a bunch sprints.
06:03In fact, they look like they may well get caught right on the line. Who is going to take this?
06:08They go sprinting.
06:10Mathieu van der Poel, Tade Pogaccia, Jonas Wengergaard.
06:13It's going to be a photo finish but it's going to be Tade Pogaccia, stage number one to the world champion.
06:20Well, the big guns showing they'll be battling it out every single day this week no matter the terrain
06:38after Wengergaard smarred that thrilling late move. Pogaccia picking up exactly where he left off at
06:43Liège-Baston-Liège with yet another victory this season, his eighth in total. It's also his first
06:49Dauphiné stage win in just his second appearance at the race.
06:54Yeah, it's a stage win. I can come from Dauphiné happy already. But yeah, I still want to see how
07:02the shape will be at the TT and on the mountain stages. I cannot say after today that the shape
07:13is incredible. Obviously, it's good but the real test is coming at the end of the weekend.
07:19Pogaccia, Wengergaard, van der Poel and Evanepoel locking out the top four with Jake Stewart the
07:24fastest man from the peloton. Milan eventually finish down in 28th place.
07:30Pogaccia swaps his rainbow bands for the leader's yellow and blue jersey,
07:33which he could potentially keep for the whole week. He leads Wengergaard by four seconds.
07:39The Slovenian is also the early leader of the points classification,
07:43although Wengergaard will wear green on his behalf in tomorrow's second stage.
07:49Orcelain takes the polka dot jersey after his efforts in the break,
07:52the Frenchman two points ahead of his fellow escapee Thierry.
07:57And Evanepoel is the best young rider ahead of Hugo Page and Bastien Tranchant.
08:02Well, stage two will be another punchy one with more than 3,000 meters of climbing on the road to
08:06Yswa. Join us for that on Monday and thanks for watching.
