00:00Welcome to 3 to Wonder. I'm Dr. Jeff and today we're going to learn about seasons. Summer,
00:08fall, winter, and spring. Yes, it all happens in a pattern. Let's explore.
00:19Today we'll learn that seasons happen in a pattern that repeats each year.
00:30Hey, what's the matter with you two? Addison and I want to go skiing,
00:35but we can't because it's summer. Hmm, that is true, but don't worry,
00:40because soon it will be fall and after that it'll be winter and you can ski or snowboard.
00:47Come on, I'll show you. It's time to go into our imaginations. Follow me!
00:52Ready? Here we go. In 3, 2, 1, day!
01:10Where are we? Welcome to summer, where there's long days with lots of daylight.
01:18Ooh, it's warm. You could say that again. Ooh, it's warm.
01:29Have some cold iced tea and enjoy the summer heat.
01:36Ah, so much better. So, why is it hot in the summer?
01:41Great question, EJ, and the answer is it's hot because it's sunny.
01:49This may just be the sun, but did you say it's hot because it's sunny?
01:54Yes, I did. The sun shines light down on our planet Earth,
02:00and that sunlight warms things up. In the summer, the sun is out for longer,
02:07and its sunlight warms us up more. Look at these trees. What do you see?
02:13Look how these leaves are green. It seems that most leaves are green in the summertime.
02:19And because there's more daylight in the summer, we can play outside longer.
02:24And animals love it too. Look how they're playing outside.
02:27Oh, it would be fun to join them. But I think the season is about to change in our imagination.
02:39Whoa! Seasons change a lot faster in our imagination.
02:43Yes. In real life, it takes one full year to change through all four seasons. But in our imaginations,
02:52we can do it super fast.
02:54The leaves were green and now they're all different types of colors, like orange and yellow.
02:59This must be fall.
03:00Yes! Fall comes after summer. There is less daylight in the fall, which makes the air get a little bit colder.
03:10Look, the leaves. They're falling. Maybe that's why this season is called…
03:18Fall! Yes!
03:25Do trees get rid of their leaves in the fall because there's less daylight and it's colder?
03:30Good question. Some trees conserve water and energy by losing their leaves. When that happens,
03:39the leaves change colors. But not to worry, because when it warms back up again, leaves will grow back.
03:47What do animals do in the fall?
03:50Think of fall as the season when all things get ready for winter. Look!
03:57Watch how the squirrel gathers nuts. Why do you think it is hiding the nuts in a tree?
04:04So it can eat the nuts when it's cold out.
04:06Think! Think!
04:08Otherwise, the fish might be buried under snow.
04:10Exactly! And then the squirrel can survive the winter because it knows where it can find food.
04:18So if animals are getting ready for winter, that means the next season must be winter.
04:25Correct! It's winter!
04:27I'm going to imagine a warmer outfit.
04:32Good idea.
04:35Good call, Addison. Look! It's snowing!
04:40So why does it snow in winter anyway?
04:43What?
04:43I said, why does it snow in winter anyway?
04:48Oh! You see, in winter, there is even less sunlight than in fall.
04:55That makes it very cold because there's less sunlight to warm things up.
05:01Think of snow as drops of rain that have gotten so cold they freeze into snowflakes.
05:10Some animals sleep during all of winter in order to stay safe and healthy.
05:17All right! And when animals sleep during the winter, it's called hibernation.
05:23Time to explore the next season!
05:26This must be spring! The warmer air is caused by having more daylight in the spring. The sunshine
05:34helps to melt the snow. And spring flowers are blooming. Now that winter is over and it's spring,
05:41does that mean animals will come out of hibernation?
05:45Yes! They're ready to enjoy a sunny spring day!
05:49And all kinds of baby animals are born during spring!
05:53Dr. Jeff, if we just had summer, fall, winter, and spring, what comes after spring?
06:00Summer!
06:03Yeah!
06:05But summer already happened!
06:09It did?
06:12Well, that's because there's only four seasons and every year they always come in the same order.
06:19Summer, fall, winter, spring!
06:38It's always the same order! And that cycle repeats every year!
06:42summer fall winter spring that makes it a pattern every year in the same order
06:51exactly and if you know the pattern then you can predict what season comes next
06:59so after summer it'll be fall with less daylight and then winter with the least
07:05daylight then spring with more daylight and then summer again which is the
07:11season with the most daylight you got it now it's time to try it yourself
07:24today we're going to make an arts and crafts tree to show how the seasons happen in a pattern you're
07:31going to need construction paper of a few different colors like white light green dark green and orange
07:40a pencil a bowl a glue stick a pair of scissors and some markers first use a bowl to draw a circle
07:48on the paper then cut out a big circle from all the pages of construction paper
07:58next fold each paper in half then decorate each section to look like the season it represents
08:06white will be winter the white represents snow and the tree branches will have no leaves on
08:16light green will be spring when the leaves start growing back and when plants grow flowers
08:22dark green will be summer when lots of trees are green with leaves
08:26orange will be false when leaves change color and fall off next fold the white circle in half and glue
08:36it to the half of the light green circle
08:41then fold the dark green circle in half and glue it on top of the light green one then repeat with the orange
08:49brown sugar Soldier slides
08:53as you flip through your artwork you will notice that the seasons always happen in a certain
08:58order just like in nature winter then spring then summer then fall try it yourself
09:10Seasons happen in a pattern that repeats every year
09:21Summer has more daylight and the winter has less
09:26Summer, fall, winter, spring
09:30These are the four seasons
09:33Summer, fall, winter, spring
09:36These are the four seasons
09:38Seasons happen in a pattern that repeats every year
09:43Summer has more daylight and the winter has less
09:49Summer, fall, winter, spring
09:53These are the four seasons
09:56Summer, fall, winter, spring
09:58These are the four seasons
10:04And now you know. Until next time, I'm Dr. Jeff.
10:07I'm AJ.
10:08I'm Addison.
