Former President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation banning nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, and Sudan, from entering the U.S., citing national security threats and poor vetting standards. The White House says the ban will take effect June 9 and partially restricts travel from seven additional nations. Trump linked the move to a recent attack in Colorado and emphasized the need to prevent unvetted migration. The policy echoes his earlier "Muslim Ban," drawing controversy but winning court backing. Certain exemptions, like green card holders, remain.

00:00We will not let what happened in Europe happen to America.
00:04That is why today I am signing a new executive order placing travel restrictions.
00:09We don't want them.
00:10The recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country
00:33by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted, as well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas.
00:43We don't want them.
00:45In the 21st century, we've seen one terror attack after another carried out by foreign visa overstayers from dangerous places all over the world.
00:55And thanks to Biden's open door policies today, there are millions and millions of these illegals who should not be in our country.
01:03In my first term, my powerful travel restrictions were one of our most successful policies,
01:10and they were a key part of preventing major foreign terror attacks on American soil.
01:16We will not let what happened in Europe happen to America.
01:19That's why on my first day back in office, I directed the Secretary of State to perform a security review of high-risk regions
01:29and make recommendations for where restrictions should be imposed.
01:33Among the national security threats, their analysis considered are the large-scale presence of terrorists,
01:41failure to cooperate on visa security, inability to verify travelers' identities,
01:48inadequate record-keeping of criminal histories,
01:52and persistently high rates of illegal visa overstays and other things.
01:58Very simply, we cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States.
02:09That is why today I am signing a new executive order placing travel restrictions on countries including Yemen,
02:18Somalia, Haiti, Libya, and numerous others.
02:22The strength of the restrictions we're applying depends on the severity of the threat posed.
02:28The list is subject to revision based on whether material improvements are made,
02:35and likewise, new countries can be added as threats emerge around the world.
02:40But we will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm,
02:45and nothing will stop us from keeping America safe.
02:49Thank you very much.
