00:00Muslims from all over the world have
00:03begun the once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage
00:06called the Hajj. On Wednesday pilgrims
00:09started their five-day journey by
00:10circling the Kaaba seven times in a
00:12counterclockwise direction. They then
00:16travel to surrounding sacred sites in
00:19Mecca where they will immerse themselves
00:20in other religious rituals. Before
00:24leaving the holy city pilgrims will
00:27circle the Kaaba another seven times
00:29signifying a spiritual farewell to the
00:31sacred sanctuary. This year's Hajj falls at
00:36the start of the summer making the heat
00:38an additional challenge to the already
00:40physically demanding pilgrimage. In a
00:44response to the soaring summer
00:45temperatures Saudi Arabia has invested
00:48in crowd control and cooling systems and
00:50are taking additional measures to
00:52contend temperatures that are expected
00:54to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
00:59for the next day.
