00:00Now, Mrs. Sinclair, let us re-examine the significance of this letter.
00:18May I read it to Dr. Watson?
00:19By all means.
00:22Dearest.
00:23Do not be frightened. There is a huge error, which it may take some little time to rectify.
00:31Wait in patience, Neville. Written in pencil on the flyleaf of a book, octavo's size, no watermark.
00:39Posted in Gravesend by a man with a dirty thumb. This is not your husband's writing.
00:44No.
00:45But the note is.
00:46Without question. It's the hand he always used when he was in a hurry.
00:49Whoever gummed down the envelope had, unless I am very much in error, been chewing tobacco.
00:59It is a trifle, of course, Watson. But there's nothing so important as trifles.
01:10Mrs. Sinclair, there was an enclosure.
01:19Mrs. Sinclair, has your husband ever spoken of a bar of gold in Upper Swandam Lane?
01:35Never.
01:35I suspect that Dr. Watson has a question to put to you.
01:38Um, this is a difficult question to ask, Mrs. Sinclair, but, um, has your husband ever shown any signs of taking opium?
01:50You always appeared perfectly normal.
02:00Though I confess I would not recognize the signs. What are they?
02:04Well, listlessness, a lack of energy, an inability to concentrate, a general air of apathy.
02:11Dr. Watson is a specialist in uncontrolled addiction.
02:14My husband was not an opium addict.
02:20That's to say, is not an opium addict.
02:27Mr. Holmes, I know you think my husband is dead.
02:32I fully realize that letter could have been written on Monday and only posted today.
02:36I know the circumstances, as they have been described, lead to the inescapable conclusion that he has been murdered.
02:44But equally, I know that he is alive.
02:47There is such a keen bond of sympathy between us.
02:52I should know if evil came upon him.
02:59Please help me to find him.
03:22Watson, if Neville St. Clair is alive and well, why doesn't he come home and demonstrate the fact?
03:45Presumably because he's not alive and well.
03:47Yes, but this letter could have been written at any time.
03:50Perhaps under duress.
03:51It could even be a skilful forgery.
03:54And the signet ring?
03:56Easily removed.
03:57Especially if the victim is dead.
04:01Indeed.
04:05Proceeding on the hypothesis that Neville St. Clair is dead.
04:09How did he meet his death?
04:10Well, clearly he was murdered.
04:12By whom?
04:13Well, the police think he was this chap boo.
04:15I see no reason to disagree with the police.
04:18Except?
04:19Except what?
04:22You say he's a cripple?
04:23Yes.
04:24How severe is his disability?
04:27It's only a slight limb.
04:29Well, my medical experience tells me that when there is a weakness in one limb, it's very often compensated for by exceptional strength in the others.
04:35You're not convinced?
04:39This man is a professional beggar.
04:45He's well known in the city.
04:47He's well liked in the city.
04:49I've seen him many times.
04:50He has a remarkable faculty for repartee with which he delights his many clients.
04:55Well, he sounds harmless.
04:58Why, therefore, did the police arrest him rather than the Lasker?
05:00That is the very question that I put to Inspector Bradstreet.
05:03No, no, my penis is a penny for me, he says no, no, no, no.
05:09The murder has obviously been committed by a process of elimination.
05:14Boone must be the murderer.
05:16Are these Neville Sinclair's clothes?
05:18Hmm.
05:21Why did you eliminate the Lasker as a suspect?
05:25Because Mrs. Sinclair saw her husband in an upstairs window, apparently in the middle of a struggle.
05:30She went to a downstairs door and was confronted by the Lasker.
05:36While they were conversing, or to be more precise,
05:39while the Lasker and his assistant were ejecting Mrs. Sinclair from the building,
05:42the fight was proceeding upstairs, leading, as we now know, to the death of Neville Sinclair.
05:48On the 21st birthday present, a man of meticulous habits, no scratches.
05:53What was the motive in killing Sinclair?
05:55That remains to be established.
06:02Not a trace of opium.
06:05Could it have been robbery?
06:06No, no.
06:07No, Sinclair's wallet was in his pocket.
06:08It's not the money untouched.
06:14How do you explain the coins?
06:16The other coat.
06:19Hmm.
06:20I cannot truly answer that, Mr. Holmes.
06:23Let me try.
06:25Boone kills Sinclair.
06:29He removes the outer garments, hoping to capitalize on them and their contents.
06:35He lifts the body, carries it across the room,
06:41forces it through the open window, hence the abrasion.
06:44Blood upon the windowsill.
06:46Hmm.
06:47He releases it into the river.
06:48Well, it's sucked away by the tide.
06:51In the midst of this activity, he hears the scuffle downstairs as Mrs. Sinclair tries to force her way in.
06:56There's not a moment to be lost.
06:58Must dispose of the clothing.
06:59He starts with the overcoat.
07:07He realizes at once it will float and not sink.
07:09So what does he do?
07:11He rushes across the room to some secret hoard where he's accumulated the fruits of his beggary,
07:19stuffs all the coins that he can lay his hands on into the pockets of the overcoat,
07:24and drops it into the water.
07:28And would presumably have done the same with the other garments if you and your men had not arrived.
07:31Well, it seals the other garments behind the curtain in the hope that they will not be noticed,
07:37and they would not have been noticed, had Mrs. Sinclair not been so persistent.
07:41Inspector, whatever plot has been hatched in that opium den,
07:47I cannot but imagine that the Lusker is not somehow involved.
07:52I was sorely tempted to arrest him on the day.
07:56I'll send a couple of men up there now.
07:58No, Inspector, with your permission, may I suggest an alternative strategy?
08:09By all means.
08:12Let me visit the opium den.
08:14Discreetly. Incognito.
08:17We shall learn what we may.
08:21But what did you learn?
08:23Nothing.
08:28Nothing.
08:38Everybody,
08:41as far as I can ascertain, appears to be telling the truth.
08:47I cannot see
08:50an overall pattern.
08:55Can you see a pattern, Watson?
08:57Oh, I see no pattern.
09:00But I do see a woman
09:02who, despite all objective circumstances,
09:05still believes that her husband is alive.
09:07And you've said on many occasions
09:08that the impression of a woman
09:10may be more valuable than the conclusion of an analytical reasoner.
09:13But if he is still alive,
09:25where is he?
09:27I have no idea.
09:29But I do have an urgent request.
09:33It's now well past four in the morning.
09:35May I go to sleep?
09:36Certainly.
09:39Ah.
