00:00Never, ever give up.
00:03There'll be times in your life you'll want to quit,
00:06you'll want to go home.
00:07So many people that have really hit big
00:10have gone against the tide.
00:12But you have to have great confidence in yourself,
00:14you have to be the right person.
00:16There are very few people that can pull it off,
00:18but when you pull it off, it's great.
00:21In order to be successful,
00:23and you people are well on the road to success,
00:27you have to find out what makes you excited,
00:31what makes you want to get up each morning and go to work.
00:35If you love what you do and dedicate yourself to your work,
00:40then you will gain momentum, you will gain that momentum.
00:43You have to.
00:44And each success will create another success.
00:49I always tell this to people,
00:51you have to know whether or not
00:53you continue to have the momentum.
00:56And if you don't have it, that's okay.
00:59Because you're going to go on,
01:00and you're going to learn,
01:01and you're going to do things that are great.
01:03But you have to know about the word momentum.
01:06But the big thing, never quit, never give up,
01:09do something you love.
01:11When you do something you love,
01:12as a scout, I see that you love it.
01:15But when you do something that you love,
01:17you'll never fail.
01:19What you're going to do is give it a shot again,
01:22and again, and again.
01:23You're ultimately going to be successful.
01:26And remember this, you're not working.
01:28Because when you're doing something that you love,
01:30like I do, of course I love my business,
01:33but when you do something,
01:35when you do something that you love,
01:37remember this, it's not work.
01:40So you'll work 24-7, you're going to work all the time,
01:45and at the end of a year, you're not really working.
01:47You don't think of it as work.
01:48When you're not doing something that you like,
01:51or when you're forced in to do something
01:53that you really don't like, that's called work.
01:57And it's hard work and tedious work.
01:59So as much as you can, do something that you love,
02:04work hard, and never, ever give up,
02:08and you're going to be tremendously successful.
02:11I went to the Wharton School of Finance,
02:12and in that school, I met a lot of people,
02:16a lot of people heading industry today and over the past,
02:19very smart people.
02:21But I've watched some of the people grow.
02:23I've watched some of the most incredible,
02:25brilliant students,
02:27and they didn't make it like other people made it,
02:30because they didn't have that drive,
02:32they didn't have that never give up ability.
02:37I don't know if it's an ability or if you have it,
02:39just you can't quit.
02:41And I've seen people quitting.
02:45And if they would have held out longer,
02:47they would have been successful.
02:48I've seen it so much.
02:49I've seen some of the most brilliant people in the world
02:51that never made it because they were quitters.
02:53One of the most important things, never, ever quit.
02:58Never quit.
02:59They were just quitters.
02:59They would quit.
03:00They would, they just couldn't take it.
03:02They couldn't whatever.
03:04One of the things about loving what you do
03:07is that it's not work,
03:08and therefore you don't quit automatically.
03:10It's a lot easier not to quit.
03:13But you can never give up.
03:14Now, you have to also have flexibility, though.
03:19You can't necessarily say,
03:21I'm never giving up, I'm gonna,
03:23and you gotta be able to weave and bob.
03:25You don't have to go through a concrete wall
03:28when you can go over it or around it or under it or something.
03:34You have to have flexibility.
03:37You have to always be able to change course a little bit,
03:41maybe always with that same goal, but don't quit.
03:43We're on this planet for a very, very small period of time.
03:47And achievement is something that really gives you great pleasure.
03:51And when you achieve something, that's great, but now on to the next.
03:55Very important, you keep going.
03:57I've always believed in positive thinking.
03:59At the same time, I don't want to mislead.
04:02I also believe in aspiring, in terms of what you're doing,
04:07aspiring to protect against the downside.
04:10You can't just be this wonderful guy walking around and everything's positive
04:14because, unfortunately, that's not the way the world is.
04:18I love to tell people to think about the challenges
04:21so that when they do come along, you're ready.
04:24I was no different when I was 20 years old, believe me.
04:27I wanted to be successful.
04:29I wanted to get out of Brooklyn.
04:31I said, Pop, I love you, but I want to get out of Brooklyn.
04:33I love Brooklyn, but I want to get out.
04:36And I love those buildings.
04:37You know, I look from Queens and Brooklyn,
04:40and I'd see those big buildings, those big skyscrapers in Manhattan.
04:43I said, Pop, that's what I want to do.
04:47That's what I wanted to do.
04:48I was approached by NBC and Mark Burnett
04:51to do a show that they had entitled The Apprentice.
04:55Now, I had an agent, a big, big, big agent,
04:59and he was a great agent.
05:01But I shook Mark Burnett's hand, and NBC was dying to do it,
05:05and they said, we'd only do it if you do it, Trump.
05:08You're the only one we want, nobody else.
05:11So I was honored.
05:11And I said, you know, OK, I'm going to do it.
05:13I knew nothing about television, nothing.
05:17So my agent calls me.
05:19I heard you accepted doing The Apprentice.
05:21I won't let you do it.
05:22Jim said, Donald, in the history of television,
05:26there's never been a prime time show about business
05:29or what you're trying to do that succeeded.
05:32I said, I wish you told me that.
05:33Then he said, and only 3% of the shows
05:37that go on television make it.
05:39So in other words, you're probably going to have a failure anyway,
05:42but you'll definitely have a failure.
05:43I'm your agent.
05:44I do not want you to do this show.
05:47So I said, you know, Jim, I have a problem.
05:50I shook the hand of NBC, and I shook the hand of Mark Burnett.
05:54I said, I shook the hand.
05:55He said, it doesn't matter.
05:56You can't do it.
05:56I said, I have to do it.
05:57Anyway, time goes by.
05:59We do the show.
06:00It goes on.
06:01It starts at number 10.
06:03It goes to eight.
06:05It goes to five and four.
06:07It then goes to number two.
06:08And the following week, it's the number one show on television.
06:15And I knew it was good because I didn't know
06:16what the word rating meant.
06:17I didn't know is that good or bad.
06:19But I knew it was good because the chairman of NBC
06:22called me.
06:22It was my birthday.
06:23And it was 7 in the morning.
06:26And he called.
06:27He said, Donald, I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday.
06:29Now, to me, as an instinctive businessman,
06:31that means we're doing OK, right?
06:33My wife said, who was that?
06:34I said, that was the chairman of NBC.
06:36He wanted to wish me happy.
06:37She said, darling, it's like 6.30 in the morning.
06:41So we went out, and I get a call from the agent.
06:45And he calls me also.
06:47But his call was like at 8.
06:49He said, Donald, congratulations.
06:51I'd like to see you.
06:53I said, Jim, what do you want to see me about?
06:56He said, well, your show just hit number one.
06:59And if you don't mind, I think I'm entitled
07:01to a very substantial commission.
07:03I said, how much do you think you're entitled to?
07:05Well, how about $2 or $3 million?
07:07I said, Jim, you're fired.
07:09And that was it.
07:11The point is, number one, I shook hands.
07:13I want to honor my handshake.
07:14I would have, had I not shaken hand,
07:16I would have really listened to Jim.
07:19So that's important.
07:20Part two is sometimes in life to be successful, oftentimes, most of the time, you have to follow
07:28your instincts.
07:29You have to follow your gut.
07:32You have to.
07:33Your parents may say wrong.
07:35Your whoever may say wrong.
07:38But you have to do it.
07:39Now, speaking of that, you've got to love what you do.
07:43And I've seen so many instances where people with great talent went into things that they
07:48didn't love, and they failed.
07:51I would always say to people, and I'd see people, and I'd say, you've got to love what
07:56you do.
07:57Because you know, if you love what you do, you work harder.
08:00But it's not work.
08:01I love it.
08:02I just bought Doral.
08:03I was telling Jerry.
08:04I just bought Doral.
08:05800 acres in the middle of Miami.
08:06Gorgeous.
08:07I'm so excited.
08:08I want to fix it up.
08:09I love taking things and fixing.
08:12Clean things and building.
08:14I love building.
08:15I almost like fixing better because if you're smart, if you're really smart, you can save
08:21a lot of money when the building is there.
08:24The foundations are built.
08:25The steel is up.
08:26The walls are up.
08:27And then, you know, you have people say, renovation costs you more money.
08:30Those are people that aren't smart people.
08:32I know that for a fact you renovated a couple of buildings here and did very well that you
08:36could never ever do if you had to build new.
08:39If you build new, I love that too.
08:41I do it both ways.
08:43But there's something great about the renovation practice.
08:46So, you've got to love what you do.
08:50You've got to work hard.
08:52Never ever quit.
08:55Never ever give up.
08:56Because that's the other thing.
08:58I've seen people that are super genius, but they don't have that gut feeling.
09:06They don't have that stick-to-itiveness, that never quit.
09:10And I've seen people that almost made it and failed because they couldn't go that extra
09:16mile.
09:17They couldn't do it.
09:19So, you get something.
09:20You never ever quit.
09:22Never ever give up.
09:23You know, when people ask me about success, I've just started thinking about it over the
09:28last couple of years because I've seen a lot of it.
09:31You have to have an ability to handle pressure.
09:36Because you, no matter how successful you are, I have many, many friends and enemies, a lot
09:41of enemies too.
09:42I don't care.
09:43But they're smart.
09:44I have a lot of enemies.
09:45And I've watched people and I've seen it.
09:49And people that can handle pressure can be entrepreneurs, can be successful.
09:55Now I have some friends that are really, really smart, but they can't handle pressure.
10:01In which case, they should work for somebody, do great, and have a good life.
10:04There's nothing wrong with it.
10:06Because I almost think that's an instinctive thing, the ability to handle pressure.
10:09Now one of the things I tell people about pressure is, you know what, they said, how
10:14do you handle pressure?
10:15Who's had more pressure than me?
10:17Have I had pressure over the years?
10:18You have to remember, it doesn't matter.
10:21God matters.
10:22Your family matters.
10:24It doesn't matter.
10:25And if you say it, I have some people, they say, I've got to be successful.
10:29I've got to be, they'll never be successful.
10:31It's too crazy.
10:33They can't think straight.
10:35Does that make sense?
10:36Does that make sense to you that was going crazy, standing up about your success, right?
10:41So you've got to be able, you've got to be able to sort of say to yourself, nothing
10:48matters that much other than the real big deals with family, with your faith, etc.
10:54Okay.
10:55Always have passion.
11:00You've got to have passion.
11:01You've got to have passion for your family, for your life, for your church, for whatever
11:06it is.
11:07Whatever it is, you've got to have that passion.
11:09Ask yourself, with all of those blessings and all of the blessings that you've been given,
11:17what will you give back to this country and indeed to the world?
11:22What imprint will you leave in the sands of history?
11:26Did we take risks?
11:29Did we dare to defy expectations?
11:33Did we challenge accepted wisdom and take on established systems?
11:41Just give in because it was the easy way.
11:45It was the traditional way or it was the accepted way.
11:50Remember this, nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever came easy.
11:59Following your convictions means you must be willing to face criticism from those who lack
12:06the same courage to do what is right.
12:10And they know what is right, but they don't have the courage or the guts or the stamina
12:18to take it and to do it.
12:21It's called the road less traveled.
12:24I know that each of you will be a warrior when you start small, pursue a big vision and
12:31never ever quit.
12:33You never quit.
12:34If I give you one message to hold in your hearts today, it's this, never ever give up.
12:42There'll be times in your life you'll want to quit, you'll want to go home.
12:48You'll want to go home perhaps to that wonderful mother that's sitting back there watching you
12:53and say, Mom, I can't do it.
12:56I can't do it.
12:58I will do it.
13:07You're going to be successful.
13:09I've seen so many brilliant people.
13:13They gave up in life.
13:15They were totally brilliant.
13:17They were top of their class.
13:18They were the best students.
13:19They were the best of everything.
13:20They gave up.
13:21I've seen others who really didn't have that talent or that ability.
13:26And they're among the most successful people today in the world because they never quit
13:30and they never gave up.
13:32So just remember that.
13:33Never stop fighting for what you believe in and for the people who care about you.
13:40Carry yourself with dignity and pride.
13:43Demand the best from yourself and be totally unafraid to challenge entrenched interests and
13:49failed power structures.
13:52The more people tell you it's not possible, that it can't be done, the more you should
13:58be absolutely determined to prove them wrong.
14:03Treat the word impossible as nothing more than motivation.
14:09Relish the opportunity to be an outsider.
14:13Embrace that label.
14:14Being an outsider is fine.
14:17Embrace the label because it's the outsiders who change the world and who make a real and
14:23lasting difference.
14:25The more that a broken system tells you that you're wrong, the more certain you should be
14:32that you must keep pushing ahead.
14:35You must keep pushing forward.
14:39And always have the courage to be yourself.
14:45Most importantly, you have to do what you love.
14:50You have to do what you love.
14:53I've seen so many people, they're forced through lots of reasons, sometimes including family,
15:01to go down a path that they don't want to go down, to go down a path that leads them to
15:07something that they don't love, that they don't enjoy.
15:11You have to do what you love or you most likely won't be very successful at it.
15:18As you build good lives, you will also be rebuilding our nation.
15:24You will be leaders in your communities, stewards of great institutions and defenders of liberty.
15:32And you will be great mothers and fathers and grandmothers and grandfathers, loving friends
15:40and loving family members.
15:43You will build a future.
15:45You will have the confidence to speak the hopes in your hearts and to express the love that
15:52stirs your souls.
15:54May God bless all of you here today.
15:58Thank you very much.
