Man attacks Colorado crowd with firebombs, 6 people injured

Six people were injured on Sunday, June 1, when a 45-year-old man yelled "Free Palestine" and threw incendiary devices into a crowd in Boulder, Colorado where a demonstration to remember the Israeli hostages who remain in Gaza was taking place, authorities said.

FBI special agent in charge of the Denver Field Office Mark Michalek said there were six victims, aged between 67 and 88 years old, who were transported to hospitals.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the United States over Israel's war in Gaza, which has spurred both an increase in antisemitic hate crime as well as moves by conservative supporters of Israel led by President Donald Trump to brand pro-Palestinian protests as antisemitic. His administration has detained protesters of the war without charge and cut off funding to elite US universities that have permitted such demonstrations.

00:00The FBI shares in the sorrow of the Boulder community, especially to those who have family or friends injured in this tragedy.
00:08We're early in the investigation, but some details have emerged.
00:12I'm able to confirm there are six victims, ages 67 to 88.
00:18All of them have been transported to local hospitals.
00:22This attack happened at a regularly scheduled, weekly, peaceful event.
00:26Witnesses are reporting that the subject used a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into the crowd.
00:36The suspect was heard to yell, free Palestine, during the attack.
00:42The subject has been identified as Mohammed Sabri Salomon, and he's 45 years old.
00:49The FBI is processing the crime scene in the subject vehicle and interviewing key witnesses.
00:54We're assisting Boulder police in providing technical, analytic, and additional forensic resources.
01:01As a result of these preliminary facts, it is clear that this is a targeted act of violence,
01:07and the FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism.
01:12Sadly, attacks like this are becoming too common across the country.
01:15This is an example of how perpetrators of violence continue to threaten communities across our nation.
01:22It's our job, the FBI, the Boulder police, and our law enforcement and community partners,
01:27to bring these criminals to justice and keep our communities safe.
01:32I want to give first an update on the scene.
01:34As many of you are aware, we have several blocks closed off in downtown Boulder surrounding the courthouse.
01:40We are still clearing that area for devices.
01:43When this call came out today, our officers rushed as quickly as they could somewhere close to the area,
01:49and they immediately ran into a chaotic situation where a man was throwing Molotov cocktails
01:54and using other devices to hurt people.
01:57We know that four of those victims were taken to Boulder Community Hospital
02:01and remain there or have been released.
02:05I don't know the status of that.
02:06Two additional victims were airlifted to the Denver metro area.
02:11So the question was about the condition of the victims.
02:15The last update I had is that at least one victim was very seriously injured,
02:20probably safe to say critical condition,
02:22and then other victims received more minor injuries.
02:25I think there's a wide range, but we haven't talked to doctors yet
02:29and gotten an actual rundown of specific injuries.
