This building, the Control Yuan, is home to the government branch charged with handling
00:04
ethics breaches.
00:05
But today, it's at the center of its own ethics scandal.
00:08
And backers of the opposition bloc are outside protesting and calling for a reckoning.
00:13
Control Yuan officials have been caught using government cars for personal errands.
00:16
One, Secretary General Li Junyi, has offered to resign for using government cars to take
00:21
his dog to the pet salon and deliver a takeout order to his house.
00:25
But protesters say at least three other Control Yuan officials also misused government cars.
00:30
The Control Yuan says it will deal with these officials, and has limited official car use
00:34
for now.
00:35
The three of us who have been taken out, we will send it to the紀律委員会.
00:40
But if there is no car behind, we can't be able to confirm it.
00:50
But this assurance hasn't quelled anger.
00:52
And while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has also said rules on car use should
00:56
be enforced, the loudest voices come from the opposition.
01:00
Criticism of the Control Yuan and calls for its abolition are not new, and come from across
01:04
party lines.
01:05
But lately, the opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party have been more aggressive,
01:10
slashing the body's operating budget this year by 96 percent.
01:13
The TPP leader questioned whether the Control Yuan will act impartially in this case.
01:17
The Taipei District Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation of its own, meaning
01:35
what happens is only partly up to the Control Yuan.
01:50
Even with one of the officials involved offering to resign, the fallout from this ethics scandal
01:55
in the government's own watchdog may only be just the beginning.
