Public Cars, Private Errands: Ethics Scandal Hits Taiwan's Gov't Watchdog

Revelations that officials from Taiwan's government watchdog branch, the Control Yuan, used government cars for personal errands has sparked controversy and a protest centered on the political opposition.

00:05But today, it's at the center of its own ethics scandal.

00:08And backers of the opposition bloc are outside protesting and calling for a reckoning.

00:13Control Yuan officials have been caught using government cars for personal errands.

00:16One, Secretary General Li Junyi, has offered to resign for using government cars to take

00:21his dog to the pet salon and deliver a takeout order to his house.

00:25But protesters say at least three other Control Yuan officials also misused government cars.

00:30The Control Yuan says it will deal with these officials, and has limited official car use

00:34for now.

00:35The three of us who have been taken out, we will send it to the紀律委員会.

00:40But if there is no car behind, we can't be able to confirm it.

00:50But this assurance hasn't quelled anger.

00:52And while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has also said rules on car use should

00:56be enforced, the loudest voices come from the opposition.

01:00Criticism of the Control Yuan and calls for its abolition are not new, and come from across

01:04party lines.

01:05But lately, the opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party have been more aggressive,

01:10slashing the body's operating budget this year by 96 percent.

01:13The TPP leader questioned whether the Control Yuan will act impartially in this case.

01:17The Taipei District Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation of its own, meaning

01:35what happens is only partly up to the Control Yuan.

01:50Even with one of the officials involved offering to resign, the fallout from this ethics scandal

01:55in the government's own watchdog may only be just the beginning.
