00:00You came to the Giro somehow for GC, what's the feeling of winning a stage and what does
00:09it mean for you for your career?
00:11Yeah, I mean it's been mentally and I guess physically challenging Giro, I came for GC
00:17and yeah I was feeling good in the first week and then unfortunately I got sick on the second
00:23rest day and yeah I wasn't feeling my best in the second week and sort of slipped off
00:29of GC and then it was all about trying to recover and see if I could get a stage.
00:35The GC goes to your former teammates, Simon Yates?
00:38Yeah, I mean I don't know what I'm happy about winning the stage or seeing Yates win pink,
00:45he's an awesome guy and yeah I had the pleasure of riding with him for a couple seasons and
00:51doing a lot of racing with him and I mean I don't think anyone deserves the pink jersey
00:56more than him.
00:57Congratulations.
00:58Congratulations Chris, when you started this morning did you imagine to make such a
01:28long escape at this final?
01:31No, not really.
01:32I mean the idea was to look for the break but I wasn't necessarily sure the break would
01:40arrive in the finish either I think with the big GC battle I wasn't going to be surprised
01:46if one of the GC guys won the stage but when I got in such a strong group and then we had
01:53such a big gap.
01:54Yeah, I rode my pace up the Finestre and was solo and then yeah it was all about finishing
02:00it off.
02:01One sec.
02:02One sec.
02:03One sec.
02:04One sec.
02:05You want to do any question?
02:09Okay.
02:10Sorry.
02:11Yeah, yeah, no problem.
02:12Okay.
02:13Yeah, yeah.
02:14Okay.
02:15Next question.
02:16When the Finestre started, when did you begin to believe you could do it?
02:31Oh, yeah.
02:32I mean we started quite a hard pace, Trex at a hard pace at the bottom of the Finestre and
02:38then I think it was Remy Rukas from FDJ kicked off the front and I followed him and then we
02:48sort of, yeah, another group came across and I jumped from there and only one guy was able to follow
02:58and then I actually just thought I'm better to ride my own pace to the top here.
03:03Such a long, hard climb that's sort of about managing the effort and then once I got rid of him it was the
03:10same just keeping keeping the effort under control what I could manage and and yeah also not exploding
03:18so I didn't have enough to get to the finish.
03:21Press room, sala stampa.
03:51Yes, Cristian, when you were in the breakaway, if you realized that by listening from the crowd
03:57or your sports director, what was going on behind you like the GC fight?
04:03Yeah, on Fenestra, my sport director was keeping me updated with the gaps, just telling me
04:11how far behind the GC guys were and I heard on the radio that Simon Yates was solo with
04:18quite a decent gap to the other GC guys and then off the Fenestra as well into the valley
04:24I knew Simon had Wout van Aert with him and yeah, obviously made me a bit nervous
04:30Wout van Aert chasing me through the valley.
04:32I thought the time gap could come down pretty quick but yeah, happy to hold on.
04:41What does it mean for you to win on stage in the Giro and you were a teammate of Simon Yates,
04:56did you believe he could do this?
04:58Yeah, I mean for me it's awesome.
05:02I couldn't ask for a better finish to my Giro.
05:07I had some ups and downs throughout the three weeks so it's nice to finish on such a high note
05:14and yeah, I was teammates with Simon for the past couple of years and I did a lot of races
05:19in support of him and his GC ambitions and yeah, I've trained a lot with Yates here as well
05:25and I know how talented he is, I know he's capable of winning grand tours
05:30and yeah, I'm almost happier to see him in pink than I am to win the stage.
05:36So yeah, I'm super happy for him.
05:40When I was teammates with him I knew it was possible for him to get a result like this.
05:44So yeah, I wish I was still his teammate helping him get a result like this but at the same time
05:50it's just nice to see him get a result that he deserves.
05:55Any more questions?
05:56Domande?
05:57Press room, start stampa.
06:00Thank you Chris, congratulations.
