Hegseth discusses regional security with Asean counterparts ahead of Asian security summit

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth says he is committed to 'deter aggression by communist China' and increase security and stability in the region during his meeting with Asean defense officials on May 30, 2025. The meeting came ahead of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue defense and security summit in Singapore, which will run throughout this weekend. US officials previously told Reuters that Hegseth will attempt to persuade Asian allies that Washington is a better partner than Beijing.
