00:00First practice at the circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ahead of the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix
00:05and it was Lando Norris with the fastest lap of the session, clocking in at 1 minute 13, 718 seconds.
00:11He's been quick here before, he was on pole 12 months ago,
00:15setting a new track lap record in the process, something of a habit for the Britain in recent times.
00:20However, he didn't convert his pole into a victory in 2024, that went to Max Verstappen,
00:25who's won here four times, including the last three on the bounce.
00:28The defending champion was three-tenths back from Norris in P2 this timeout.
00:33The two Ferraris were next, Lewis Hamilton took two goes at getting past the racing ball of Isaac Hadjar at one point,
00:39finding no space at the approach to turn 12. He finally made the move on the next street.
00:46And in a neat reversal, the other racing ball driver, Liam Lawson, fresh from success in Monaco last time out,
00:51felt blocked by the other Ferrari, driven by Charles Leclerc.
00:55What the, what was that?
00:57Yeah, clearly wasn't called.
01:00Spanish fans have two home heroes to cheer on.
01:02Carlos Sainz, who's never finished outside the points in 10 visits to Barcelona.
01:06And of course, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso,
01:09who's won twice at the circuit, most recently in 2013, when fighting for Ferrari.
01:14Sainz had a delayed start due to the engineers having to bleed his brakes,
01:18while Alonso topped the timing tables on one of his early hard compound runs,
01:22but later wasn't happy with how his Aston Martin was handling.
01:25Hey, I need to check what is going on with the car. Something's wrong.
01:29All teams have tweaked their front wings for Barcelona in response to new technical regulations brought in by the FIA
01:34to address concerns about the amount of vertical deflection.
01:37A similar stipulation was brought in to govern the rear wings earlier this year, beginning at the Chinese Grand Prix.
01:44Time will tell if these new specifications make a noticeable change to the current pecking order.
01:49There's a proper newbie on track in first practice.
01:52Alex Elbin gave up his seat in the FW 47 in favour of current F2 and Williams Academy driver Victor Martins.
01:59He was making his Formula One weekend debut, taking the second of the Grove team's mandated four FB1 sessions,
02:06which must be given over to rookie drivers.
02:09Haas also had a different driver running on Friday in the shape of 31-year-old Japanese reserve Rio Herakawa,
02:15making his second appearance for the American team, having already had a run out for them in Bahrain
02:20and another go-around at Suzuka when he was under the Alpine team's umbrella.
02:25He found himself going off at turn 10 on an early push lap.
02:28Yeah, just started to lose the rear of the car there, I think, as he turned in.
02:32And as you say, just correcting it and then just keeping the car pointing straight into the gravel
02:35so he could drive through it and back out.
02:38After providing plenty of data for the team, he finished the session P17.
02:43Kicksauber have arrived in Barcelona with a new pixelated paint job,
02:47which they've dubbed glitched out.
02:49And the changes are not just on the surface.
02:52They may be rocking a new front wing like everyone else,
02:54but the Swiss-Italian team have also brought a new floor and some amended bodywork parts.
02:58No noticeable improvements so far, but it's very early days for that.
03:03So Norris top from Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc, Piastri, Lawson, Behrman,
03:07Hajar, Tsunoda and Gasly.
03:10P11 for Russell, then came Stroll, Alonso, Hülkenberg, Sainz,
03:14Bortleto, Hirakawa, Antonelli, Martins and Colopinto.
03:18Okay.
03:18¡Gracias!
