00:00Living in the White House is a pretty sweet situation.
00:03You have gorgeous meals made for you by the White House kitchen staff,
00:07you're given a $100,000 redecorating budget,
00:10and you have a team of dozens of people ready to cater to your every need.
00:14However, there are also some caveats to living in the White House.
00:18You aren't allowed to open windows, change certain rooms,
00:22go where you want without approval,
00:24or even own an iPhone without it having intense security settings
00:28that liken it to a child's phone.
00:30That all being said,
00:31leaving the White House can be a pretty jarring experience.
00:34When presidents and their families head back to normal life,
00:38they're given seven months of transition funding,
00:4010 years of Secret Service protection,
00:42and 30 months of private staff with a salary not exceeding $150,000.
00:48So they're not exactly tossed out into the cold,
00:51but there is a lot of adjusting that needs to happen.
00:54But the big question is, where do they go?
00:57We'll see just how much these spaces cost,
01:00where they are,
01:00and why exactly the former presidents chose to live there.
01:04Barack Obama
01:05Obama was president from 2009 to 2017,
01:09and he was very vocal about his living plans after his presidency.
01:13Though many expected him to return to Chicago,
01:16Obama instead decided to stay in D.C.
01:19to allow his youngest daughter, Sasha, to finish her schooling,
01:23rather than purchasing a property outright,
01:25even though he definitely could afford it,
01:27Michelle and Barack decided to lease a home in the upscale neighborhood of Calorama.
01:32And by home, I mean mansion.
01:34The 8,200-square-foot home mansion has nine bedrooms,
01:38eight and a half bathrooms,
01:40and is worth $6.2 million.
01:43Given that Washington, D.C. contains some of the most expensive homes in the world,
01:48that price does make a bit of sense.
01:50And though the exterior of the home has a charming vintage cottage appeal,
01:54the inside is the polar opposite,
01:57a minimalist modern design.
01:59The kitchen features white, gray, and black accents,
02:02which are also found throughout the rest of the home.
02:05There are state-of-the-art appliances,
02:07and with no more White House kitchen staff serving up meals,
02:10I have a feeling they get some use.
02:12There is also an area in the kitchen reserved for storing books,
02:15or drinks, if that's more your style.
02:18If it were me, I'd probably put, well, both.
02:20Beyond the living room, there are several sitting areas.
02:23The window panels tie the exterior of the house to the interior with their vintage design,
02:28while also sporting the sleek lines and minimalist colors that are found in the interior of the home.
02:34The main living room is subtle and cozy,
02:37with a big fireplace for wintry nights,
02:39and yes, more gray and white.
02:41The dining room sports a weathered wood ceiling,
02:44which contrasts the white walls and dark wood floor original to the home.
02:49There's also a chandelier that is sure to turn heads.
02:53The bathroom has perhaps the most ambitious choice of all,
02:56a busy black and white wallpaper,
02:58with a black, white, and gray tile floor.
03:01It's a bit hard to imagine the former president doing his business here,
03:05but I suppose I probably shouldn't be trying to imagine that anyway.
03:08There's an upstairs living room that's perfect for curling up and watching movies,
03:12and a room that can be used for morning workouts and morning reads.
03:16The master bedroom has vintage windows and sleek, minimalist feels.
03:20Off the bedroom, however, you'll find a rather loud walk-in closet.
03:24Outside, there's a large courtyard and backyard,
03:27with plenty of room to lounge, relax, and soak up the sun.
03:31George W. Bush
03:33George W. Bush was president from 2001 to 2009,
03:38where he received some of the highest and, well,
03:40lowest approval ratings out of any president in history.
03:43Through it all, Bush wasn't subtle about his country roots,
03:47so it made sense that upon leaving office,
03:49he headed back to his home state of Texas.
03:52Known as Prairie Chapel Ranch,
03:54his ranch home 25 miles west of Waco
03:57was actually a staple during his presidency.
03:59Visitors included Vladimir Putin,
04:02Saudi King Abdullah,
04:04Angela Merkel,
04:05Tony Blair,
04:06Spanish King Juan Carlos,
04:08and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon,
04:11as well as several other prominent world leaders.
04:13After his presidency,
04:15George retired to the ranch to recuperate and relax,
04:18and it's easy to see why.
04:20Set on 1,600 acres,
04:22the ranch has a 40-mile network of bike and horse-riding trails.
04:26The property has three miles of frontage along a river,
04:30as well as a 22-acre man-made pond
04:33that President Bush had filled with fish.
04:35At over 17 feet deep,
04:37the pond is a great place to head out on the skippy and wetter line.
04:40There's also a large grove on the property as well.
04:43The four-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot home on the property
04:46was made to have easy access and views outside,
04:50with floor-to-ceiling windows
04:51and doors that lead outside in almost every room.
04:55A 10-foot porch encircles the house,
04:57with a tin roof that allows Bush and his family
05:00to enjoy the porch even when it rains.
05:02In addition to the main home,
05:04there is also a guest house
05:05and a garage southwest of the main house on the property.
05:08The complex also includes a helicopter hangar,
05:11which is not exactly common in your average ranch.
05:14Bill Clinton
05:15Bill Clinton was president from 1993 to 2001,
05:19with a bit of trouble in between those years.
05:21He lived in government-provided housing
05:23for nearly 18 years by the time he stepped out of the Oval Office,
05:27meaning the transition back to normal life
05:30was pretty dramatic for him.
05:31Luckily, he had some pretty nice digs to look forward to.
05:35At 15 Old House Lane in Chapao, New York,
05:38the Clintons bought a 5,232-square-foot home
05:42for $1.7 million,
05:44though it's estimated to be worth a lot more today.
05:48The 11-room colonial sits on 1.1 acres
05:51and is surrounded by a large white fence with a small gatehouse.
05:55There is a lush front yard
05:57that encompasses the classic New England-style home.
06:00In the backyard, there's a detached red shed and garage as well.
06:04The Clintons are very private about their home,
06:07so the last time the public saw it,
06:09it had quite a bit of 90s flair.
06:11And although I had a great time in the 90s,
06:13I can do without it in my house.
06:15The home has a nice dining room and a cozy study with a large library.
06:19The house is decorated with items from his presidency
06:22and his travels around the world,
06:24including items from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
06:28Of course, one house isn't enough
06:30when you have the money from two political careers.
06:33Bill also purchased a home in Washington, D.C.,
06:36in an area known as Embassy Row back in 2000
06:39when Hillary ran for senator.
06:41The Georgian-style home is 5,500 square feet
06:44on a tree-lined lot that is a little over a third of an acre.
06:48Inside, you'll find seven bedrooms and five baths
06:51with several living spaces to choose from.
06:53However, the outside may be the most incredible part of the home.
06:57The backyard has a large pool and sun-lounging area
07:01surrounded by flowers and trees,
07:03providing privacy and seclusion.
07:05Upon purchasing the home,
07:06the Clintons added a solarium
07:08so they can unwind and relax in the sun.
07:11The home features curved doorways and bright colors,
07:14which really contrasts their mansion in New York.
07:17There's a formal dining room with bold walls and furniture,
07:20a family room with a large bookshelf,
07:22and a room that's used for informal meetings.
07:25So, there you have it,
07:26the homes of former presidents.
