00:12The spotlight of worldwide interest is focused
00:14for the moment on Kathmandu, the capital
00:16of Nepal.
00:18Far away and little known,
00:20its streets present a picturesque
00:22oriental scene attractive enough to
00:24westernize at any time, but all the more
00:26intriguing today as Kathmandu awaits
00:28the conquerors of Everest.
00:30The people are mostly Buddhist.
00:32Strange effigies of gods and demons
00:34are a local feature.
00:36By way of sharp contrast, the royal palace
00:38is a magnificent building of western appearance
00:40and the royal guards at this time
00:42were very much on the spot, for King Tripuvan
00:44was preparing to do honour to the mountaineers.
00:50The Himalayas, seen here
00:52from an RAF aircraft in wartime
00:54are the giants of the earth.
00:56Grim, inhospitable, forbidding
00:58and the greatest of these giants, of course
01:00is Mount Everest itself, a permanent challenge
01:02to the adventurous spirit of man.
01:10Now it has been conquered and in Kathmandu
01:12they build special stands and arches of welcome
01:14in readiness for celebration.
01:16Nepalese musicians practice their repertoire.
01:20They mean to say it with music.
01:26Already arrived are Gregory and Bordillon
01:30of the first assault party
01:32and the leader of the expedition,
01:34Colonel, soon to be Sir John Hunt.
01:36His wife had flown out to meet him
01:38and they now posed for their photographs
01:40with two smiling Sherpas.
01:46There were eight camps,
01:48steps to the highest point on the earth's surface
01:50which was to be at last
01:52attained by two men.
01:54And over there, buried in the clouds,
01:58is the mighty mountain which they scaled.
02:00Back in Kathmandu,
02:02it was a day of great excitement
02:03as Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing
02:05were due to arrive.
02:06Everyone was waiting for them,
02:08including Nepalese army leaders
02:10and the British ambassador with Mrs. Hunt.
02:12Yes, Kathmandu certainly did the Everest heroes pride.
02:16Grand processions must be rare events in such a place.
02:22The men of the moment came riding in a coach
02:24past the crowds of people,
02:26all expressing delight and praise
02:28for the two mountaineers who together
02:30reached the top of the world.
02:36Tenzing Norky, the Sherpa,
02:38now called the Tiger of Tigers
02:40and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand
02:42who, like the leader of the expedition,
02:44is to be knighted.
