00:54Can you just talk a bit about the kind of release of emotions that that was
00:57and also was there a moment when you were worried
00:59you might get defaulted after all that?
01:03That was a tough point.
01:08I don't actually remember what happened.
01:11Now and yet it was just a nice release of energy.
01:15I think it was a good throw.
01:17I threw it pretty well, pretty accurately.
01:19I was happy it stayed on the court.
01:23Racket wasn't broken, nothing.
01:24Yeah, it was kind of just instinct through it.
01:28Like I said, playing Daniel was not easy.
01:32I've lost him the last, I think, four, maybe five times at least.
01:37It was always going to be a tricky match for me.
01:39I was really happy with how I handled the match
01:43and how I had to fight literally every point to have a chance with him.
01:46It was just pure emotion at the end and pure instinct.
01:50It was a good throw.
01:52Cam, well done.
01:53We've had four Brits through now to the second round.
01:55We could have five.
01:56We could have six.
01:57And if we get into that territory, some of the best results we've had here
02:00for 40 years almost.
02:02Just talk about how impressive is that if you have a number of people
02:05in the second round.
02:06and it's quite a contrast to last year when there was a complete wipeout.
02:10Oh, yeah.
02:10Yeah, everyone's looking good, Jack especially.
02:15You know, his consistency and his tennis level is so impressive.
02:20And, yeah, it's nice to see him playing well.
02:23And Jake as well.
02:25You know, who knows how high he can go with his tennis.
02:29I really like his game.
02:30He's so focused.
02:31and he hits the ball big off both sides, doesn't have any weaknesses.
02:34So, on the men's side, yeah, us three were playing well.
02:39It's nice to have those boys pushing me.
02:42And, yeah, on the women's side, you know, Katie's had a title on the clay.
02:47She won yesterday.
02:48Emma won yesterday too.
02:50I'm not sure how the others, they're playing now, but...
02:54Oh, okay.
02:55I'll take that.
02:56So, yeah, nice to have everyone playing well on the clay, you know,
02:59especially before the grass season and everyone's confident playing well.
03:04But I think, yeah, especially on the men's side,
03:06it's looking very good and a lot of depth even just behind me as well.
03:11Cam, just back to yourself.
03:12You haven't had the easiest time recently with fitness and everything.
03:15The results, the way you performed last week and today
03:19make it all worthwhile to show what you can do out there.
03:23Yeah, I think it just comes back to how much I've been enjoying it,
03:27you know, last week and the weeks before that.
03:29The whole clay season, I'm just really enjoying all of it
03:32on the court, off the court.
03:35And, you know, not just trying to put any expectation
03:37on the match day or the performances, you know,
03:40just playing with what I got that day
03:43and making it tough for the other guy
03:45and enjoying all the moments.
03:48And I did that again today.
03:49And I could have lost the match, but somehow went my way.
03:53And, yeah, I think it was really helpful
03:55to play Novak last week in the semis.
03:58And I felt it was just a continuation of that match today.
04:02You know, it was like playing the fourth set against Novak
04:05and the first set against Daniil.
04:07And I really felt prepared, had the matches, like I said.
04:10And it was maybe tougher today than it was with Novak in terms of the rallies.
04:17You know, he would give me absolutely nothing.
04:19So, yeah, it was a lot of fun.
04:22And like I said, I prepared well and, yeah, managed to go my way.
04:27And you can take the confidence from last week,
04:29qualifying and playing four or five really good matches back-to-back.
04:34And then I managed to do it again.
04:36You've had a lot of great wins in your career.
04:37How would you rate that today?
04:39One of the, maybe, for me, top three,
04:42just I think in terms of pure match-ups.
04:45You know, I think I have an absolutely terrible match-up against Daniil
04:49in terms of the way we play and the game style.
04:53And he, yeah, he's so tough to play for me anyway.
04:59And he absolutely gives you nothing.
05:01And there's no easy way to win points against him.
05:04So, yeah, especially in a slam.
05:08I know, obviously, he doesn't like clay as much,
05:10but he's won a Masters 1000 on the clay.
05:12I lost to him two weeks ago.
05:13He completely chopped me in Rome.
05:17So it was, for me, I'll say, outside in Alcaraz
05:22and Sinan Novak would be probably the fourth toughest draw for me
05:27in terms of match-ups and players.
05:29So it's an extremely good win, especially my record with him.
05:33So, yeah, what's his ranking?
05:35Maybe 12 or 11 in the world.
05:37So in a slam, best of five, beating him in five sets
05:41is impressive for me.
05:42And I'm happy with, can take a lot of confidence, you know,
05:45to play for close to four hours with him.
05:48And, yeah, didn't drop the intensity as much as I thought, you know,
05:54in the fourth set a little bit there.
05:56And that was a difference between us and managed to sneak the fifth.
05:59So we'll take it.
06:00You kind of answered my question there,
06:03but given how the match went and it obviously shifted really quickly
06:07and the fourth set was really tough
06:09and then you're down an early break in the fifth,
06:10how did you then manage to, like, continue enjoying it?
06:13And what were you kind of telling yourself to just stay in the match there?
06:16Yeah, it was extremely high level the first three sets
06:19and I did nothing wrong.
06:21I was in the third set and I was, yeah, I think I just dropped the intensity.
06:26You know, playing with Daniel for two and a half hours was tough.
06:30And, yeah, he managed to play well and gave me nothing in that fourth set.
06:34And then in the fifth set, I said, okay, we've got one more set
06:38and I gave it everything.
06:41And I felt actually that the really big turning point was the 5-4 first point,
06:46kind of weird point.
06:47I came in and he lobbed me and then he went for a strange drop shot.
06:52And then that point after that,
06:54I felt I could feel him a little bit tentative there
06:57and it was the first kind of strange error he had made
07:00or strange decision he made in, like, an hour and a half.
07:03So I was like, well, okay, maybe I have a chance here.
07:06And actually the matches in Geneva,
07:11I think people served for the set three times
07:13and I managed to break three times.
07:15So I kind of felt I'd been in that situation already
07:17and, you know, it was just automatic for me and playing matches.
07:20And I think that's, can take that.
07:23And that was the difference.
07:24You know, last year I came here, tried to rest
07:27and I didn't have any matches
07:30and it was a tough, tough match against Kotov, you know.
07:34And so it was a completely different preparation
07:36and I think it suited me better, you know,
07:39to have the matches and the confidence
07:40and it showed in the end.
07:43I was just wondering,
07:44what's it like being on the other side of a net
07:46when you see your opponent getting increasingly frustrated
07:49and getting a bit more angry
07:51and chatting a lot more to the coach's box
07:52or maybe shouting a lot more at them?
07:54Do you kind of think at that moment,
07:55right, I've got them here, I need to keep on this?
07:57Or is it something where it's just part of the sport
07:59and you've learned to block it out?
08:00Do you pay any attention to that at all?
08:03Yeah, definitely.
08:04And actually, every time I've played Daniel,
08:09he's never, never snapped.
08:11He's never said anything.
08:12He's just completely locked in
08:14and he's chops me every time.
08:15So it was quite nice in the first set
08:18to see him kind of a little bit freaking out
08:21and talking to his box
08:24and trying to look for answers and solutions.
08:25I felt so welcome.
08:26No, I felt I was winning a lot of the longer rallies
08:30and against him it's not easy to do.
08:33So I felt I was troubling him with my game style
08:35and the way I was making it physical.
08:39And yeah, you take a small little confidence boost from that.
08:44But, you know, he's ready for the next point.
08:47He's a great competitor.
08:48And he's honestly one of my favorite players.
08:50and the way he plays, the way he moves,
08:53the way he makes it so difficult for the other player.
08:55I love watching him play.
08:57And it's just, yeah, he's a good player
09:00and he's a very nice guy.
09:01And yeah, he's one of the king of competitiveness.
09:05And he's, yeah, it's not easy to beat him.
09:09Cam, can you just describe mentally what it's like
09:12when you're sliding down the rankings
09:15and getting closer to dropping out of the top 100,
09:18the uncertainty that creates and scheduling,
09:21suddenly you're not guaranteed to get into tournaments and stuff.
09:24And, you know, a few years ago,
09:26you were ranked number eight in the world.
09:27You never had any worries about that.
09:28But then suddenly you're having to start thinking about that.
09:32Yeah, I think it's part of the game, you know.
09:35And for me, I was, yeah, you have to accept where you are.
09:41And you have to accept for me,
09:44I had to go play qualities last week in Geneva
09:45and I was so pumped to play, you know,
09:47and so pumped to prove myself again.
09:49And it's actually quite fun, you know,
09:52to have that opportunity now to go
09:55and you're the underdog again, finally.
09:57And you can go and play.
09:58Anyone you play, you're most likely underdog
10:01and you can go play.
10:02No expectations.
10:03It's so much fun and you can go and play.
10:05So it's a completely different perspective.
10:07You know, obviously you fight for trying to be
10:10in the top ten and we try to stay there.
10:13And I was, yeah, it was difficult for me
10:15to get a lot of momentum last year with some injuries.
10:18So it's part of the game, you know,
10:20I didn't really have any major injuries.
10:22So, yeah, like I said the other day,
10:25I was really pushing the beginning of the year
10:27to play well, to play well, to play well.
10:29And it was not coming, you know.
10:31And the moment you kind of accept where you are
10:33and I was accepting where I am
10:36in terms of my ranking and my actual level
10:38because the ranking not really lying too much.
10:40So, yeah, I accepted it.
10:43And now it's fun again and nice to be the underdog
10:47in almost every match that I play nowadays.
10:50So it's a different outlook.
10:52But I'm still enjoying my tennis a lot
10:53and I'm still getting to play the best tournaments
10:56in the world.
10:56So it's perfect for me.
10:57You won't be the underdog next
10:59because Federico Gomez is his debut, lucky loser.
11:03Do you know him?
11:04And obviously the fact you've had an Argentinian coach.
11:06Do you speak Spanish?
11:07Do you think that might help
11:08that you'll be able to understand
11:09what he's saying to his coach?
11:10My Spanish is improving, yeah.
11:12But, you know, he's a great player.
11:16Federico Gomez, I practiced with him a few times
11:17in Florida.
11:20He has massive forehand, massive serve.
11:22So on his day, I know he's very tough to beat.
11:26And, yeah, he must be playing well
11:28to beat Kovacevic on the clays.
11:31A huge win.
11:31I didn't watch, obviously,
11:32didn't watch any of the match.
11:33And, yeah, for me, nothing changes.
11:37You know, could be playing Daniel or Federico Gomez.
11:40I'm going to bring the same level,
11:42same mindset.
11:44And it's a different challenge.
11:46It can be completely different weather on Thursday.
11:50So for me, I'm going to enjoy the win
11:51and get ready for that one.
11:53I'm just still happy to be in the draw
11:55and competing.
11:57And it's good preparation, you know,
11:59to play Daniel five sets.
12:01I feel like I won't have to try to find some rhythm.
12:05You know, tomorrow I think I'll be feeling the ball
12:06quite well on the practice court.
12:08So, well, I'm going to go enjoy tonight
12:12and, yeah, get ready for that one,
12:15another big match.
12:20It seems like you've done a really good job
12:21of staying positive over the ups and downs
12:24the last couple of years.
12:25But is there a moment, a time,
12:27that was particularly tough, particularly difficult
12:29that maybe a great day like this
12:31can make you look back on and reflect on?
12:33Yeah, I think it just comes down to enjoying the sport.
12:40You know, I talked the other day about after Miami,
12:42I really took a lot of time to reflect on how I was doing
12:46and with some of the goals that I had
12:50and really took a time for myself
12:52to analyze my career and analyze what's going on.
12:57and I think it was just more too much expectation, you know.
13:01And I think now I'm just enjoying the tennis
13:03and, yeah, it's positive,
13:06but I just want to be who I am
13:09and react how I want to act and be myself.
13:11And I think that's the most important part
13:13about playing tennis or doing anything.
13:15So for me, yeah, there's always going to be tough moments,
13:19but I think for me I'm so lucky
13:20to be still playing tennis, competing at this level.
13:25And I think, yeah, I saw an interview from Darren Cahill
13:28and he said, like, you don't take it for granted,
13:31you know, coming out there to compete
13:33and play these matches
13:34because, you know, I think one time
13:35you're going to look back
13:36and you're going to miss all the tough moments
13:39and how nervous you are before matches and stuff.
13:42So I think it's quite nice to have those feelings,
13:45you know, before the match, during the match.
13:48And it's a lot of uncertainty
13:51and it's what I really like.
13:53So I think I'm embracing it
13:55and it's always going to be tough moments,
13:57but I'm still happy to be playing.
13:59And, yeah, it was a lot of fun today.
14:03So it was another good moment for me.
