Edinburgh speed limits to be cut from 40mph to 30mph

The City of Edinburgh Council has announced 19 roads which are to have their speed limits cut from 40mph to 30mph from June 9.

00:07Motus were previously able to drive at 30. But now Edinburgh City Council has named 19 roads

00:14in the capital which currently have a 40 mile an hour speed limit which is about to be cut to 30.

00:19The roads affected are right across the city and include several key routes like Glasgow Road,

00:25Calder Road, Queensbury Road, Bigger Road, Sir Harry Lauder Road and the West Approach Road.

00:38The new lower speed limit will be rolled out to these roads over the next couple of months

00:42with new 30 mile an hour signs starting to appear from Monday June the 9th.

00:48Transport convener Stephen Jenkinson says he's confident the speed reductions will make roads

00:53safer and he says statistics show a pedestrian or cyclist has doubled the chance of survival in

01:00a collision at 30 miles an hour compared to one at 40. There are said to be no more roads in the

01:08pipeline at the moment to have their limits cut from 40 to 30 but road safety and speed reduction

01:14remain priorities for the council.
